There's no shmup thread on /vg/ either, the issue is simply that there's a lack of people into these games. Even a lot of the community just pretends to like shmups while they play RPGs instead.
You know what's not retro though, RPGs. They had no relevance in most of the west until the late 90's. While shmups are THE retro genre (Space Invaders, Galaga). RPGs are a zoomer historical revisionism meme, they aren't into actually old school games.

shmups are still produced in largely the same way they always have been, whereas retro rpgs, both w and j, are pretty significantly different to modern ones
there's also the fact that they lend themselves to discussion, there's just more to talk about with an 100+ hour game than with a shmup, which you're usually done with in 20 mins
but again, the biggest problem is that shmups just aren't retro, there's no difference between a 2019 shmup and a 1989 shmup except that the 1989 one would probably have a spaceship instead of a mostly nude anime child
