>> No.6006687

For 240p content? Depends. Unless you really like scanlines, a lower tvl consumer CRT or a PVM in the 500-600 tvl range will look more natural through RGB. For 480p 6th gen content, I imagine a BVM would be the sweetspot for 4:3 480p, but how much 4:3 480p games are there?

It's definitely more of a 6th gen thing. I've found a majority of Gamecube games support 480p 4:3, Ps2 was majority 480i with a few that support 480p, and basically all Xbox games support 480p 4:3 with a few that even go up to 1080i.
>inb4 not retro

The 4:3 PVM/BVM that support 480p-1080i will also display in 16:9 although you'll get black bars on top and bottom and lose ~200 TVL.

I feel bad for retards getting into this hobby so late, I picked up my 20" PVM back when they were worthless for 70 bucks shipped to my door.

Imagine how pathetic one's life must be to sit around with a house full of dozens of giant-ass monitors to make a couple hundred bucks here and there off an extremely niche community. That just isn't fucking worth it to me. At least with the people who flip vidya games as an "investment" are doing so with tiny little carts/cds that don't take up much space.

I did pick up a couple, three PVMs cheap in the early days of /vr/ when I saw the trend but their value has climbed so much I don't even feel like leaving them on 24/7 anymore like I always did with at least three of the dozen Commodore composite monitors I bought in '99.

Let me tell you what you want to do if you live in the US and want to use RGB (hint: not >>6006783). Go out into the real world and find yourself a quality name brand consumer CRT of your personal preference with regard to size and screen technology that has COMPONENT inputs. They're still all over the place or there although they are slowly drying up. Then buy yourself a scart to ypbpr transcoder. Shinybow makes one that's about $100 and Chinese ones are about $50. There are also transcoding cables now for SNES and Genesis but I can't recommend those

You'll still need good scart cables for your consoles too so if that all still sounds too expensive for your budget just embrace that you're an S-Video person and focus on that instead. Y/C is still a very good video standard that 98% of the time will be undistinguishable from RGB in these real video gaming applications.

Is a smaller, all-plastic kind of sit down arcade cabinet that still holds 20+ inch crt monitors in both horizontal and vertical rotation. They were common in Japanese candy shops. They have to be shipped in cargo containers so they all enter the US through ports in California then sort of trickle Eastward from there. With the exception of Tekken 5 in the vestiges of the "serious" arcade before it completely shut down, I've never seen one in person here in Ohio. This is a good place to point out just how awful the Goodwill corporation is. They somehow manage to qualify as a non-profit organization and be seen as a charity in the public perception yet they flagrantly use internal slogans like "Goodwill must do well to do good" and their executives make salaries of millions of dollars while they pay their often literally handicapped employees sometimes less than minimum wage under the charade of "job training". We all know about all the retro console items going to their website but did you know that all the donated computers get sold off to Dell by the pound to be "recycled"? Supposedly they can't be resold due to privacy laws but that's bullshit - they just don't want to be responsible for having a reformatting policy or even just for hitting the hard drives with a magnetic eraser.

This brings us back around to the issue of CRTs. People want to get rid of their old CRTs working or otherwise by taking them to Goodwill and if Goodwill really have a damn about recycling they would step up and build mechanisms to do just that but unlike computers, CRTs have real toxic chemicals in their tubes and there's no profit to be made in recycling (selling) them so Goodwill turns them away for the owners who often have no other idea what to do with them to leave them by curbs or tossed into dumpsters to be smashed up inside garbage trucks to contaminate trash men, dumps, landfills, groundwater etc.

A consumer CRT with component. You can:

- Find them for free pretty easily
- With decent speakers
- At sizes you can comfortably sit on the couch or floor in front of, with other people even, and have an immersive experience

Unless you're really strapped for space and need something you can put on a desk I don't really know why people want tiny overpriced monitors apart from the nice looking cases. Only issue with free consumer CRT's is they often are on the big side. I see a lot more 32's and 36's just because people basically are hoping that gamers will take out their 200lb+ trash. I got a 32 for free but I'd rather have a nice 27 that I could move myself.

As someone who owns a 20L5, I’d countersuggest getting one of the Profeel cube PVMs and a nice VGA monitor if OP doesn’t live in a closet. Everything that you’re paying a premium on the 20L5 for versus a 20M4U can be handled just as well by a decent VGA monitor and a $30 Component to VGA converter. For SD content, the Profeel cubes look nicer in a room and have a softer look that lends themselves better to effects such as sprite blending than a 20L5’s razor sharpness.
