Just read a really great article about this but was upset as I thought it was only on Switch and unfortunately I don't have a Switch. Since it's on Steam I'll probably pick it up when it's on sale! I've played many rarer JRPG's including, Live a Live, one of my favourites, and I think Romancing SaGa will probably appeal to me on multiple levels.

The freedom available to make different decisions seems really great too! I can't remember were it this one or number 2 where multiple different decisions and paths lay available to you (or perhaps it's both). This is one of the most celebrated features of even modern day games so to see it in a classic JRPG fills me with determination, knowing I will play and enjoy this game

Probably RS2 since it's fairly uncomplicated and has a built-in mechanism to prevent you getting fully stuck. There isn't a really obvious first entry though, just go with what you have access too. Do not level grind in these games, most are designed to punish it. Other than that you can go blind.

You can pirate it, or hope it gets a physical release.

Is there a Switch physical release?

Sorry, it's just that unless you have a Switch i don't see much of a legal alternative, a lot of gamers decided they care absolutely nothing about physical releases and are so not cynical about the future of Steam or what have you that it became the big thing, as in, i swear a lot of PC releases just say "Steam" as it's become basically the face of PC gaming.

I guess you could hope it gets on GOG but i don't think Square Enix cares for GOG because it doesn't have many users...due to a lot of gamers, particularly younger ones, not caring about DRM, as in, talking to them, they don't even notice or realize there is DRM which to some people is tantamount to insanity.

>> No.6003876

>>6003778
RS3 is a good starting point, it's really easy for the series' average and it's a good example of the main strong points of the series without feeling too hard or punishing.
Mind you that all SaGa games tend to be different from each other outside sharing some common mechanical ruleset or a few other elements such as large casts of recruitable characters, the unifying idea behind the series is player freedom and mechanical experimentation.
>>6003779
No, there's no rom, the game has been remade from the ground up in Unity, with new content, redrawn art, bugfixes and the likes, it's not like Trials of Mana.

So far, it's worked for me, and any time i asked for a refund or help from Valve, they gave it to me.

No kidding, i badly scratched a Steam Wallet card i got as a gift so badly i couldn't see some characters, i didn't even have a receipt, but i took a photo of it, asked Valve for help, and they sent another 50 dollar code for me, and one of the client service guys even sent a message jokingly telling me to not use a ruler instead of my fingers, but he understands because it makes the nails dirty.

No kidding, i got a 50 bucks code and a personalized response with no receipt, though i guess considering some horror stories i heard, Valve was just really damn nice to me all the time or i just happened to get the rare guy who cared working at the time.

I'm going to reverse this and say the ones you probably shouldn't start with

Unlimited SaGa is a very acquired taste (people with familiarity with pen and paper RPGs might enjoy it better) and fairly high investment

Romancing SaGa 2 has a high difficulty level by SaGa standards so coming back after you're more familiar with the series quirks tends to smooth out the rough edges.

SaGa 3 for the Gameboy is about the only one I wouldn't recommend playing at all because it's basically a reskinned Final Fantasy and lacks most of the mechanics SaGa is known for - the DS remake is the preferred version because it happens to actually implement SaGa mechanics

The original Romancing SaGa 1 is pretty clunky nowadays.

You can start with any other game.

It's really more of a phenomenon of older people understanding the downsides of newer technology in a way that younger people don't. That and not being so short-sighted about making compromises where they shouldn't, because they've been bit in the ass before, where as younger people have yet to learn their lesson.

if you are talking about jp rs1, the wonderswan version is obsolete since there are hacks for the snes version which adds all the extras from it plus extra perma npc/boss characters that can be playable. for jp, snes is the definite version with the amazing hacks.

Now then, since I have the Vita version and played for a bit:
-Vita version still has problems with pixel ratio, I take this is really due to the odd resolution.
-Loading times are nonexistent coming from the RS2 port, Artepiazza stepped up their game
-Same features as the RS2 remaster, such as NG+ and Cross Save with PS4
-The game has 16 save slots opposed to the original 3
-Menu changes from the RS2 remaster are still there, all commands have now descriptions and properties, this carries over to the army minigame as well
-New item descriptions are a bit more indepth than RS2
>The enemy fade mechanic when running is gone, much like in the RS2 remaster
-All enemies have now their own animated intros for battle
-I might be mistaken but it seems that Army battles have been rebalanced a bit to make them easier, but it might just be my impression so don't quote me on that
-Trophies hint at no new recruitable party members, which is a damn shame, I wanted Volcano/The Professor
-Some name changes here and there: Sharl=Charl, Fairy=Peony, Zo=Rukh, Snowman=Flurry, Arakes=Alloces, Aunas=Aunus, Byunei=Buné.

As for the general balance, seems nothing has changed, but it's been over five years since I last replayed RS3, maybe they did change something, I'll find out soon anyway.

Some small updates:
-Apparently the enemy fade is still present in some dungeons, I went into the Demon King's palace and it's active in there, but it's not active in the Cave of Sacrifices for instance, not sure whether it's a bug or actually intended
-The Ring trick is still in the game
I think I missed the pet capture quest though since Muse is already in the Nightmare.
>>6004696
Can't say so far since I didn't get to any of the extra content yet, it's a solid remaster but I can't tell you much about the localization as again, I'm playing the JP version and the text in there hasn't changed.
Overall the changes are the same as RS2, better accessibility for newcomers and the same ugly weapon proficiency icons, performance wise the Vita version is already a lot better than RS2, the game is also discounted on Vita for the launch, just like RS2, so instead of 3500Y it's 2800Y, not sure whether the other platforms will have similar deals.
I'm liking it so far, the environments are done really well, I even forgot I was playing a remaster while in the Demon King's Castle because it's a 1:1 rendition of the original down to the battle backgrounds, I'd still prefer they'd give us a choice to use the original background but it's still a good compromise, not even remotely an abomination like the other Squenix remasters.
The remade battle effects are also nice overall but I haven't seen much of commander mode/spell fusion to judge the more flamboyant battle effects.

I'd say they did a good job so far, well worth buying if you want to support the series, though again, I can't say much about the quality of the localization outside of the name changes pointed above.

>> No.6004810

Also forgot since I mentioned supporting the series
https://twitter.com/SaGa25kawazu/status/1192838067360419841

Kawazu pretty much confirmed the series is officially back in the top priority list for Squenix, so it's the most important time to show support and most importantly, to give feedback as a userbase, as Kawazu himself points out.
This is great news, it means the next mainlines and the SaGa Frontier remake will have an actual budget, we're officially out of mobile limbo.

Because while it's true that the series does need new blood and a more significant generational turnover, it also means compromising things in order to make those normalfag care, and that inevitable leads down the same path a lot of other franchises took, and it's not a good one.
Not to mention that the games already took various measures to ease in new people, like making the entire systems more transparent and more streamlined, Scarlet is a good example of that, but you can only compromise so much before you start dumbing down the games and changing them for the sake of appealing to people who probably don't really care what the games are about.

I'd say it's best to try and sell a thing based on the qualities that made it what it is rather than trying to pander to strangers, those who want to listen will listen, just like it happened to people like us, it will never be a blockbuster tier franchise but at the same time it will keep being true to itself and true to what the creators wanted, not everything should be a billion seller IPs, it's fine to stay in your niche as long as you deliver.

>> No.6006208

>>6006175
Battle Rank is technically not a problem, it (should) never be as long as you pay attention to the game, the problem is most people don't so it turns into a problem
Honestly, I love the games as much as the average fan but the entire myth of BR being some kind of antigrind function is something that was born due to casuals and people new to the series not understanding the underlying mechanics and nature of such mechanics, so they kind of made up this entire thing about BR fucking you up or being made to punish grinding.
I don't think I've ever read anything from Kawazu or any other designer that worked on the battle mechanics say anything like that, neither Takai nor Koizumi ever mentioned anything about BR being antigrind, it's just a measure to make the game have a more homogeneous level of challenge and variety due to the non linear progression.

So rants aside, no it's not an issue as long as you don't play like a retard, which admittedly most people seem to do.

>> No.6006247

>>6006175
No it's pure meme. BR just lets you take whatever route through the game and get progressively stronger enemies either way. Even if you just fight random enemies instead of special high-exp encounters, fighting battles makes the game easier.
It's possible but is much more difficult to beat the seven heroes at an extremely low level, however you will be forced to grind to overcome the final boss in that case (mostly because you won't be able to keep up with its regen even if you change the battlefield element when possible).
In theory if you run/die vs 1000 battles at the start of the game you would need to seek out some manageable fixed encounters to slowly grind yourself up to par but I don't think this is something that has ever happened to a real person, the complaints about getting stuck because of BR are all based on theorizing about the game's mechanics rather than actual plausible scenarios. When someone says they're "stuck" they don't mean they're softlocked, they just mean they don't want to think about how to improve their strategy.

>When someone says they're "stuck" they don't mean they're softlocked, they just mean they don't want to think about how to improve their strategy.
I think it's more due to the frustration of failing to control the BR and getting scared by constant failures which cause most people do not really understand at all.
So most people prefer to restart rather than unfucking their run, which by all means, it's a legit and sound decision, sometime you have to wipe the slate clean and begin anew so that things will click with you.

>failing to control the BR
That makes it sound like BR is a real issue. While you can make the battles trivial by abusing certain fixed encounters to get ahead of the curve, you won't get "stuck" by not doing that. You haven't "fucked your run". You just played normally and are getting a normal experience and are completely capable of progressing.
I don't disagree that it might be easier to start a fresh playthrough and abuse what you've learned, but you're making it seem like the BR is something that needs to be actively controlled and manipulated while I see it as something that you never need to care about as you play the game.

That's what I said thought, that constant frustration gives people the idea that the only way out is restarting a save file, it's not that BR is a more or less real issue, it's that failure to understand its mechanics and where the player is failing causes people to think the BR is flagellating them.

That having been said, I'm only three or four hours in but it's not really grabbing me at all. RS2 has an absolutely fantastic start and never really lets up by constantly giving you exciting stuff to do, constantly changing up your party, giving you goals to work for re: expanding your kingdom, powering up your items hops, magic, etc. but this is really just kinda nothing. I'm not digging it as much as I hoped I would. Feels like a step back from RS2 to me.

There's some discussion about it over on 2ch, but it's very unlikely due to the remake being on Unity, and RS2 has already shown to be a pain in the ass, so a possible Bokuno port is highly unlikely given how even something as simple as the framerate appears to be hardcoded.

But I played this RS2 remake and it totally hooked me despite the mobile backgrounds, 30 fps scrolling, and other bad presentation. I don't play a JRPG that impresses me often.

If you run from fights they get even stronger

You probably grinded too much if random encounters are a hassle, but then again if you're struggling against the 5 mermaids I doubt encounters are hard at all. I could beat them yet no enemies have upgraded yet, still fighting goblins with clubs and shit

In that castle there's I think only two enemies who are scripted at a high BR, the goblin leader (a pig, doable and a good enemy to spark some techs early on) and the bird at the end of a set of stairs (three red gargoyles, who are really strong, couldn't beat them yet)

No, yeah, the only particularly challenging fights were the ones deeper in the palace. I don't know how the hell you were able to beat the mermaids early on, they have like 1k HP each and my only heavy hitter is Julian who can do about 250 per tech, the rest are barely pulling 100 each and the mermaids pretty much one hit kill with their life steal moves. I tried using Heat Wall or whatever it's called and while that did protect from Drain Life, it didn't do anything against Blood Suck which was the higher damage move anyway. I don't want to abandon this quest early because I feel like if I don't resolve it now then I'll miss out on it, but I also had to run away from Algernon. I keep getting dead ended by the bosses I encounter. I'll probably get a better feel for the game after a bit but for now I'm having a rough time clearing bosses out.

Eh, I don't know about, a lot of the door opening business has you look for the keys in totally different places, take the Twinmoon Temple in RS1 for instance, where the two medallions needed to enter the temple are literally on different continents altogether, or opening the path on Mt. Chitapa, which requires you to look for all the Minstrel's instruments around the world, one of which is permanently missable too.
You should have also noticed how the palace has barely any chest with content, NPCs also tell you how it has been raided for a long time so that's already a hint that what you're looking for might not actually be there at all.

Nowadays, it's hard to believe such a game sold so much and was such a success, you need to look at it through some special lenses imo, which you'll get by playing most of the series first so you can appreciate how much it helped to create a new standard and how ambitious it was.

Personally none of the Romancing SaGa games instantly hooked me. I had to invest some time in all of them. I am unsure of all the reasons but many of then could be that at the start of the game a lot of the encounters are easier, you haven't unlocked a lot of the world, and you are trying to grasp at what ever you are able to to get something to actually do. It isn't until I spent more time with them that a lot of quests actually start tying into one another and you get the ball rolling with them, and downing big bad bosses that the Romancing SaGa trilogy gets its hooks into me. They start off decent to good, but as they unfold you fight those crazy bosses and feel satisfied with figuring out and finally beating various quests.

I don't find them impressive in the first hour, or possibly even five hours. They are fun in that time but they don't worm themselves into my mind so I just only think about it until I dump a bunch of hours into them. I was having fun and progressing here and there, but the turning point was when I beat the dragon on the mountain while barely holding onto life. Then it clicked with me and I've just been engrossed with it playing it into the wee hours of the night.

The sparking mechanics are the very same, some techs will make you learn other techs more easily, i.e. Kick>Sobat for RS2 or Kick>Lightning Kick for RS3, the only difference is that BR is garbage in RS3 and sparking multipliers take a serious hit for most things so you're always better off using other techs to learn better techs instead of hoping to pull it through normal attacks.
