Quake 2 Ground Zero is without a doubt one of the worst experiences I have gotten out of an ID game. Bloom is okay.

Just makes me realize that even If I love Doom, I have always preferred when level design is a mix of trying to look like real locations and some gameplay crazy thrown in. So the locations that are similar to Blood are amazing and look even better than in Blood originals.

Not doom fault, it was a pioneer after all, and I can tolerate Quake because it seemed amazing and still is moody as fuck today

Here's something you guys might be interested in, I've modified the current version of DoomRL Arsenal to be "better" (I think the changes are better, you may not)

So here's what I changed:

>All classes have the scout perk so you can double jump everywhere and run faster (pistols also do more damage, neat!)
>Blueprint computers will show all assemblies in your PDA (you can give yourself one with "summon rlblueprintcomputer")
>The max amount of mod packs has been increased to 40, no more leaving mods behind
>Increased the weapon limit to 12 so there's less dicking around with your inventory

What does everyone hope for in Doom: Eternal?
I just want steam workshop intergration and mod support. Probably won't measure up to the variety we have with Doom 2, but it'll definitely give the game more value.

>> No.5997456

Stratton says they’re working on mod support as a long term goal, but only time will tell.

>> No.5997457

Mod support is never happening in a modern AAA game. Especially on the steam workshop. And you're definitely not going to see it from the company who tried to monetize mods for Skyrim.

>> No.5997465

I'm hoping for decent lore and story like they promised. It's not a huge deal, but having even a little lore to consider goes a long way for me.

People love to hate on hitscanners, but they might actually be an integral part of the formula. They shake up the combat by inherently being high-priority targets even if they don't have much health or do much damage. Heretic is fucking boring compared to Doom.

Might nothing. They are. I'll agree it can suck when you get shot in the buttcheek from halfways across the map for the last 5 HP you have, but they are absolutely vital for variety and making combat encounters more interesting.

The game didn't really tried to fix whatever TNO did wrong and don't get me on the story heavy focus, for an id related franchise

I mean, not terribly. even at low health enemies generally only drop enough to bring you up to like, 50-75, which is enough to survive one hit from a relatively light enemy. You're not gong to be able to consistently keep yourself alive on enemy health drops alone if you're consistently getting hit, they just help you hang on by a thread.

You still generally need a pickup or a LOT of chained glory kills (enough that the risk doesn't really outweigh the reward) to get back into comfortable territory.

A problem I will give it is that some of the runes are just no brainers. getting armor on glory kill is ridiculous, as is infinite ammo at full armor and "literally just come back from death once," albeit the latter is basically tailor made for ultra nightmare and I'm glad it exists for that reason alone

I mean we still have some mid level and indies making amazing games but yeah as soon as games stopped being made by designers and started being made by big teams, suits learned how to exploit the medium. It was inevitable but videogames are still struggling in a sense.

And its the blame of some developers, A game with the aspirations of Arkane Prey is at the same time incredible they tried to make a modern SS\looking glass game, but the game feels also so hampered by either time money and maybe publisher pressure. Just an example.

I cant put my finger on what is going on in 2019 with games. Maybe it was always meant to explode into mindless multiplayer hamster wheels like the incoming diablo.

Maybe I was only every optimistic about something as trivial and a bit ephemeral as tech like videogames. Most people dont give a shit about some old game from the 90s, just like most music fans dont give a fuck about some obscure prog band.

We should take what we get, enjoy it, maybe even learn how to make it ourselves. Maybe I am even being a big bay, like very medium creative spurts, and legendary games only come once in a while not every year.

End blog rant sorry.

Anything else, just UNF every wall that looks a bit off, backtrack a little if you find a switch that doesn't seem to do anything and see if you can get to higher places if it's at a spot where the only way to get to it is from above or from a teleport.

Look for inconsistent minor details. A misaligned or mismatched texture is one of the most basic indicators mappers use. Decorations like candles are sometimes used as well. Listen carefully for the sounds of distant doors opening or lifts activating as you roam the map. Some mappers have their own more subtle tricks they'll use, but that should cover the common secrets that appear in most maps.

>> No.5998392

use anything out of place that you can reach, shoot anything out of place that you can't reach, always try to reach the places that are just barely out of reach, check for small ledges that look like they could lead somewhere
and check your automap - oftentimes you'll find walls that look the same way doors look on the map, or you'll notice that an area that looks inaccessible actually does have an entrance tucked away, or other things like that. some mappers are good about not making the automap spoil things however, so it's not a silver bullet.

thing is, most mappers tend to do secrets differently - I like putting them in spots that are somewhat difficult to reach or out of the way, and don't really do the "out of place wall texture/light/computer screen/etc" secrets, so part of it is really just learning how the mapper likes hiding their stuff. once you figure that out, the majority of secrets in a map become pretty easy to find.

>I always want to save them for something really dangerous not just s group of axe throwers
That's not really a good mentality to have, even if it is popular. Like Doom, Heretic gives you enough powerups before every major encounter.

Heretic tries to combat that by only allowing you to carry 1 item of each type to next level so if you didnt use the extras you wasted them, but it seems that it was not enough of a clue for you.

Also the crossbow -the main workhorse of the game quite literally neveer runs out of ammo (at least for me, and I use it constantly). Also turn on autoaim.
The shtic of the Crossbow is the ability to aim at 3 targets independantly, and if there is no extra targets, then you get a concentrated volley on the same target at any distance, but it does so through autoaim and having it off disables the feature entirely making it weaker at distances.

Everything about it just felt worse than TNO, they fucked up the stealth somehow, those tedious sections in the resistance base were made even worse with the sprawling submarine shit, the story was mostly dogshit and trying way too hard to be edgy and 'punk', the levels felt even more linear despite being a bit more open, and the number of fucking cutscene-missions where you just walk around was increased tenfold... Yes, I've looked up those two crappy videos on YT but didn't bring anything particularly important. It's nothing.
Everyone seem to eat up whatever the marketing is making.

The game being delayed, all this Doom related stuff milked non-stop by Bethesda, merch,DLC, Pre-Ordee it's like they're trying to get as much money as they can because there's something wrong with the final game. And they're doing it as much as they can before the game releases.

The fanbase seem to be filled with more posers each day, rather than actual passionate ones. They entered because it's one of the hottest games in recent years.
No modding(rarely) ,gameplay discussions, just trending shitty memes and fan arts at best.
In fact it's like the Fallout fanbase where plenty are still loyal after that disaster of 76.

I know I'm pessimistic about rhe whole thing but I really don't want another The New Colossus, which killed the hype for anything about Wolfenstein. I know ID Software is making it but you given the current gaming industry climate, rotten to the core, I still feel there's something fishy going on.

Here's the issue, you can put politics in your game but have to be part of the plot, make you think about their ideology.

Western devs mainly shove them as propaganda, they feel out of place and tasteless.

Yeah, but that was all in front of the game, discovering the gnome conspiracy was really kinda hidden. You had to go out and find it.

It was quite a shock. I mean it was force kidnapping and raping industrial style, and people keep mentioning that just a little " where do all these half ogres come from?"

When I started fighting those gnomes and disintegrating them with my necromancer I only stopped when they were all dead.

>It's also designing new maps and gameplay mechanics around the lack of hitscan.
You're thinking of player hitscan (i.e shooting enemies that are above/below you). Enemy hitscan isn't a necessity at all, you could play the original Doom perfectly fine if you modded in enemies with bullet tracers.

Or at least do this: make enemies lock onto a target position as their two-frame attack animation starts. Chaingunguys would just repeat this procedure perpetually until they stop shooting for any reason.

>> No.5999382

Fair. The amount of content by the modders and mappers will still go on.
A franchise may die but the work by the fans won't.

Companies destroying a franchise for dumb demands are the worst. And the devs cannot do anything about it.
Dead Space 3 turned into a co op game full of micro transactions because for EA 4 millions copies sold for DS2 wasn't enough.
Fallout New Vegas not getting an 85 on Metacritic=no full paycheck by Bethesda.
Fallout only got raped non-stop after that.

The take on orcs in general was really interesting. They're ostracized for being dumb and violent, but also they really are just that (because they came about through "supernatural selection" by some asshole wizard ages ago). Still held in high regard as one of the best games of the year. Opinions on it from old school FPS fans are still mostly positive.

The only thing is that there's just not a lot to talk about. The game is fun and really well made in general, but it basically has NO CONTENT. At least not any of its own. A game that basically has no identity of its own and is just references piled on top of references with generic (but good) Build Engine gameplay is not exactly something that encourages discussion. >Nightdive is doing Doom 64, likely this will be a good port given Kaiser's previous experience.

One wonders if Marty Stratton (who clearly likes Doom 64) insisted to Bethesda/Zenimax that Nightdive should do the Doom 64 ports. Possibly his one goal was to just get Doom 64 rereleased, and Doom 3 just happened to get a good rerelease while Bethesda was throwing money around.

I ended up sending a really snotty letter over Rage 2. The game was pretty bland in general and it absolutely did not need two gay guys crawling around the floor wearing a furry butt plug. I get that it's a post apocalypse wasteland and there's a lot of degenerate shit going in but who the fuck wouldn't blow the head off of a furry the moment they saw them with an butt plug like that?

It's weird a mainstream title now has to put in animal tail butt plugs to show what degenerate is any more. Can't even use a dickless wonder or a homo any more. That's too normal for our culture. Now we're getting into fur affinity shit just to make a mad Max game. Gimp suits aren't cutting it when you have them marching down streets.

Am I the only one who isn't interested in doom eternal? Nu doom was nice and all but eternal seems like it's adding gimmicks instead of improving the core gameplay. I don't want grappling hooks and shit. Just tighten up what they have. Add some new enemies and change up levels to be less arena based. Adding verticality to maps is a bad idea when the time they did it on nu doom (foundary) the level became a confusing jump pad filled mess. Double jump was more than enough just work with that and figure out how to make glory kills valuable but not a get out of jail free card. It won't be long until we see a jump suit and weapons with customisable parts dropped by demons.

No because id was Carmack making amazing tech demos then a bunch of his friends padding it out into a full game. Doom and Quake were at the time beyond cutting edge. Then once they existed others could push them in ways Id couldn't because of hard ware limitations or simply lack of experience to build up from.

It's just sad to see a mid life crisis after he failed to produce anything of value once he left id and he has nothing else left. Mean while Carmack is struggling to find people on the planet able to keep up with the tech he's creating.

According to Bobby Prince id turned on each other after Dooms success. They grew apart and instead of being DnD bros they spent more and more time in their own offices away from each other. The ones who had options left for bigger and better things rather than continue to isolate themselves from people they had out grown.

Did you get bored of dark souls and come to shit up the classic fps thread?

Artificial difficulty is a real thing. Artificial difficulty can be misused but they doesn't stop it existing. Since you're a dark souls kiddy we can use an example from that series. In dark souls two enemies will do 180 mid sir spins to catch you even if you rolled under them and their momentum should take them away. Dark souls three has many attacks which delay themselves purely to screw you over. A boss will pause mid swing to make it so your ifrsmes run out and you get caught. Or in dances case at release her grabs hit box was so large you could roll through her arm and still be caught on the other side. Or you could roll back way out of range visually and still be caught. This disconnect of I game physics and the mechanical side of things is artificial difficulty. You intentionally set up situations which punish a player for responding to the visual cues you give them.

Of you want a Doom example then look at half the plutonia maps that spawn shit on top of you. Having a squad of chaingunners waiting for you after s teleporter which players have no way of surviving without knowing in advance is artificial difficulty. You're screwing the player for not expecting to be screwed with in just the way you do it. There's no skill test that can make you survive it first time round. You need that bfg or rocket already equipped. Even if you have a full stack and press the weapon key you're dead before it fires. It's artificial hardness just designed to fuck a player who doesn't know on advance not to get fucked.

If you're playing a wad thats specifically designed for "people who had finished Doom2 on hard and were looking for a new challenge", then you really shouldn't be expecting it to treat the player like he's new to the games mechanics anymore. This "no way of surviving without knowing in advance" excuse is complete crap when most traps and encounters in Plutonia are mainly just more extreme versions of similar scenarios you can find in Doom 1 and 2 themselves.

>> No.6000942

There are several places you step through an elevator or hit a switch and immediately get gang banged by multiple hit scanners.

There's also the Baron trap where you try to walk down a small path and a Baron spawns and behind you a bunch of enemies are revealed. There is no way to expect that when the Baron then teleports on top of you. It's out of no where and uncalled for.

Plutonia is designed to be hard and it often does that fairly. But there are often times it does it unfairly and you just get fucked in ways you can't predict or survive but having high skill. That's what makes it artificial difficulty. It's not difficulty you can best fairly, you have to be aware it's going to do something and then counter it in advance.

>> No.6000946

Neither of the things you mentioned sound like "no way of surviving without knowing in advance" type of situations. Especially in a wad that expects the player to be aware of such tropes due to it being designed for people who finished Doom 2 on hard, and not new players that are oblivious to them.

>> No.6000947

Being aware that monster closest exist doesn't mean you expect every switch to be one and you should only hit switches while holding a top tier weapon. It's like games containing mimics. You don't expect every chest to be a mimic because they become ineffective when they are.

And a monster closet of imps is very different to a monster closet with hit scanners at point blank range. You can be taking critical if not lethal damage before you're able to react.

Romero was a big part of why Doom even happened like it did. Aside from being an ideas guy (which basically everyone at iD pulled double duty as, even Sandy and Adrian), he made levels, some of the best ones in Doom, Doom 2, and Quake, but beyond that his level making is what drove technological development.

During Doom's alpha, Romero put together a piece of architecture in a level which the then current engine couldn't handle, the rendering just went nuts, it was too complex. Pic related was that culprit, and it frustrated the fuck out of Carmack, he thought the initial algorithm would be enough, but it wasn't, it couldn't handle a pillar and some concentric stairs. Development had to halt as he racked his brain and did some research to discover Binary Space Partitioning, the exact medicine needed to handle this, and that optimization would eventually allow Doom to truly shine. Levels would not be nearly as complex or even good looking if not for this development, it would not have been the same.

>> No.6000997

One enemy doesn't. But being completely surrounded by ten shotgunners or chaingunners can.

If you don't like people discussing the games then fuck off to another thread. Classic fps aren't perfect and hit scanners are one of the worst parts of them when used poorly. Just because most of doom is good doesn't mean it doesn't have problems on other places. Mass hit scanner ambushes are one of those problems. You can't magically know the super shotgun which is the most used weapon in the game is unsuitable for the ambush after you hit a switch without seeing the ambush. Who the fuck hits every switch holding the plasmagun just in case it's one of the maybe five times that's actually needed?

And besides the topic is artificial difficulty. Which has been clearly defined in doom as multiple hit scanners ambushing you. Any where up to four is fine but beyond that it becomes bullshit. It doesn't matter if it appears once or fifty times. It exists in doom and blood is built around it. Where no matter how many memes you spew you're still taking damage because th game decided you were without any way to prevent it.

I mean that's just not true, it comes down to the enemy's AI and rng, they can absolutely begin firing instantly, especially if they're already woken up like some maps will do, and plenty of maps don't give you cover, they expect you to rocket or plasma them before you die in the time it takes to switch weapons.

So in the past few days I've been trying to make a ZSDF editor, because doing ZSDF in Notepad is by far the most masochistic experience you could put yourself through. For now you can only read, update, and delete entires loaded from an existing DIALOGUE file, but I'm working on fixing that. The colors: green is pages linking to the selected one, yellow is pages the selected one links to. Red is invalid links. That means its choices link to a non-existent page or page is not linked to by anything. Notice how the numbers shift when you delete pages in the middle. Yeah.

Shit like this and how some braindead idiots fail to understand it irks me to no end.
It has nothing to do with "gitting gud" at all.
getting gud do nothing for making shitty design/mechanics not shit.
Both games can challenge you based on your skill. In these cases your past experiences prepare you for the next challenge.
Things you literally can not prepare for in advance without outside foreknowledge is an artificial difficulty and has nothing to do with being challenging.
Just the same as getting through shit via memorisation has nothing to do with getting good.

Example for the simpleminded:
You are given the multiple choice test on a completely unfamiliar subject (lets say minerology) you have no way of knowing answers for. You attempt at guesing the answers. After you turn it in, You get told what which questions were answered right and wrong (but not exactly what the answers are, or WHY they are the way they are), and asked to re-do the test. You keep trying exact same test with same questions again and again until you get all answers right.
But in the process you don't really learn anything.
You just memorise the answers.
You didn't git gud.
In another test on the same subject with different questions your memorized answers won't help you at all, since the questions are different, and you still don't know anything on the subject aside from answers to very specific questions.

This is the reason why people dislike such "challenges" - they take no effort to actually overcome since there's no test of knowledge or skill involved, just dumb memorization.
This is not a challenge, this is a boring tedium.
This is how many traps of Plutonia and most of the Blood encounters are made.
You may scoff at it and tell people who talk about it to "git gud"
But the fact is - you didn't "git gud" yourself either, since there's nothing to "git gud" at.
You just memorized the answers.

Hey man, if Doom 2 didn't exist, and we just went straight to Plutonia from Doom 1, I'd actually agree with this notion that Plutonia is artificial difficulty. But the fact of the matter is, its a wad designed for experts at Doom 2 on UV who want a bigger challenge. Most of the encounters that supposedly require foreknowledge of the map in order to survive are actually just cases of the game expecting the player to have already played through Doom 2 on UV, as they are mainly just harder tougher versions of Doom 2 encounters. Its not a case of a multichoice question on a topic you're not familiar with at all, and more a case of a more difficult question on a subject you should already be familiar with by now.
The only actual artificial shit I can think of are stuff like the arch-viles that hide behind midtextures in Map31, but that kind of stuff is very rare in Plutonia.

Imagine being so stupid you can't figure out video games that were made over two decades ago. You're still thinking about how to outsmart the enemies themselves and not the jackass that placed them. You're never gonna make it at this rate.

>> No.6001160

In a GOOD rythm game you a) get notified of the required input in advance enough to recognise it and react to it and b) the inputs are designed according to the beat so similar parts of the song require similar inputs
These games designed to challenge how well you recognise and react to the RYTHM.
And like in any medium there are good rythm games that do things right, and shitty ones.
Dumb memorisation and re-trial can get you through them, like any other videogame ever, but playing like that is antithesys of fun for most people.

Enemies with patterns are one thing.
Enemies with patterns that don't match up with what's actually going on (inconsistent hitboxes) is another.

You look at how the enemy swings his sword. You recognised the pattern. You know how fast your dodge is. You take the moment, dodge the swing and land in an attack successfully That's how it should be.
You take the moment and dodge the swing... Except you still stumble back and take damage even though you dodged the swing, and the sword didn't visually connect, because fuck you that's why. Doesent matter that the hitboxes of the prior enemies matched with their visuals. Hitbox of THIS particular swing doesent.

I only said Plutonia just because it was used in the prior post. I actually didn't replay it in a long while so my memory on that is wonky, but even so I still remember quite a few "gotcha!" moments you could not prepare for. Sure, that only works once, and you can still force through some of them anyway, but that does not make it any more fair. You may not notice such moments any more because you played through the game enough times to already aware of them ahead of time, even if you didn't exacty memorised them. Try playing through Plutonia again and think about how a person playing the wad for the first time might experience it.

If it were a game like IWBTG I agree. But Plutonia isn't that. I dont remember a part where that happened. It's curious that you consider a game where you inevitably die and have to replay something as unfair and/or unfun. Do you think all games should be beatable without dying once, otherwise you consider it a bad game?

When i think of unfair games i think of old knockoff 90s DOS platformers badly programmed/QA tested with a crazy pixel perfect jump in the middle of otherwise stupidly easy levels, or flaky unresponsive controls with framerate drops in the middle of a jump, not just dying because i didn't know something was coming up.

No one said games should all be easy and you should never die. But dying to a fair challenge is not the same as dying to an unfair one. Let's use your platforming example.

>Devs make a pixel perfect jump where the collision detection works well. You can see the place to jump to and from and know exactly how to do it.

>The hit collision is faulty and some times you make the jump and fall through the platform any way. Nothing the player did was wrong.

The second one is artificial difficulty. It's the game screwing a player who did nothing wrong and had no way to avoid it without knowing the games broken in advance.

I would argue iwtbtg are not artificial difficulty because it's a puzzle game designed around sucker punches. That's built right into the core concept. When you sign up to play it you sign up for that. Did any one sign up for plutonia to spawn you into a map with an active chaingunner standing behind you? I don't recall a single doom 2 map with enemy sucker punches as you spawn if you want to use your doom 2 excuse. There's also a map half way through which plays like a iwtbtg where every move you make screws you by spawning more enemies in awkward positions. You can't tell me a monster closet with two shotgunners in it is to prepare you for that. It's utterly different.

I'm all for difficult games. I enjoy the challenge. I don't enjoy a Dev intentionally fucking a player over with no warning. Demons souls has loads more insta death traps than plutonia does. But I can see some envitomental warning for that and out think it. I can't out think ten chaingunners once I push a switch and the floor falls out from under my feet. Notice no one is complaining about any projectile enemies. Those you can always dodge. But hit scanners can just wreck you because the dice rolls went their way and that's the problem.

Example: I found a mod for serious sam, which claims it's "beefed up levels for serious players" or some shit. In it, I've gotten exploded by a random kamikaze who was perched on top of a doorway. There was no warning, no sound from him, nothing. Just enter the door, hear a short AAA while he falls a meter towards you and it's game over. That's prime bullshit.
On the other hand, the base game is challenging, but fair. There's no sudden "whoops, you're dead" moments when you're clearing out the kleer corridor in metropolis, you just have to try your best. It's purely a wall of enemies against your dodging skill.
But that's not what anon is talking about. The things he talks about are bad design that relies exclusively on meta knowledge and trial and error. It's a pretty shit way to create gameplay, no matter the game.

Now, I wouldn't personally consider plutonia artificial difficulty, I think it's pretty fair after 20 years of playing doom it should be. But the core point is there, and it's not about gitting gud.

If you want something done, do it yourself. Build is a little more complicated than doom engine, but you're still drawing the layout on graph paper.

I wanna make a Dredd 2012 movie level in build Duke. Imagine going from floor to floor and going through all the rooms in the movie. The lobby, the first drug raid room to the corridors, the school room with the psychic scene, the medical center, the civilians apartments, the level with the chaingun attack, the phone booth level, outside with the skate ramp and the juveniles, the slomo drug production area, the surveillance room, mamas room. It'd be so cool.

Another reminder, that, at the end of the day, Arcane Dimensions' (Forgotten Sepulcher included) design, visual included, is a poor man's imitation of Myst 3: Exile, a game without a single straight edge, and an extremely poor choice for recreation in Quake engine.

Why Dredd 2012? Its a good movie but not a fun depiction of the dredd universe at all. Movieverse is a really mediocre.

I replayed the old Dredd game recently just for fun, only tied the demo back then, and while fun and lighthearted, Anderson and Hershey have nice tits, my god I cant believe it was Unreal engine holy shit.

Fuck it felt so jank and slow, cant believe consoles managed to fuck that engine so badly. I was back in ~2006~ fucking cursing consoles again.

Dusk does that crap as well. At least you can turn it off. Why? Just stop.

>> No.6002321

You already noted the main issue, it looks like they're just copying Doom but with modernized visuals. Some people like to call games like Dusk and Amid Evil rehashes, but they actually had a lot of interesting, original stuff going on on top of the classic formula. Hopefully it ends up being more unique as it's developed.

>> No.6002326

At least Dusk still uses low-poly models and low-res textures. Prodeus is using assets at least as modern as Doom 3's.

>> No.6002332

Looks interesting anyway

>> No.6002334

It think dusk models are too low poly. They could be a little more interesting.

>> No.6002336

well, on the other hand we probably would ignore it otherwise. this whole "throwback-fps" niche gets attention. at the end amid evil and dusk were good timesinks for a week or two...the don't need to be the next Doom or Quake to be fun,

>> No.6002345

I want more throwback fps and games. It might get to the point where I thought that if you stayed low res\low poly enough but with more powerful engines and computers, we could have gigantic complex level design, or intricate ai or features.

In late 90s and early 00s while playing shit like shogun TW or homeworld I thought about that all the time. Sure I wanted better graphics as everybody else.

But there is a certain charm to some aesthetics like pixel based games that if taken to another level could compete with normal games. I think minecraft was proof enough in a certain way.

>> No.6002349

What other levels would you make? A desert themed judgment Day zombie apocalypse level?

No movieverse hive building seems like a good idea. You could have different floors made of different stuff. A mall, a residential sector like the part where he gets attacked by the minigun. Its a good idea for map pack.
Even the skybox is simpler in parts where you have you can see outside.
Regular Dredd would be difficult to pull off for sure. Crazier more blade runner moebius style city etc.

>>>But there is a certain charm to some aesthetics like pixel based games that if taken to another level could compete with normal games.

I agree on that point. imo Quake has still more charm in it's graphics than any of the modern shooter stuff. The more realistic or "better" your graphics get, the less room there is for a unique style. I could show you a screenshot of Doom, Quake or the build-trio and your brain would recognize the game in less than a second. Tell me if you can divide a Call of Shooti from a Battlefield or something like that as fast. Sadly most modern games try to go in the same direction as the mainstream shooters...as seen in nu doom or wolf tno.

>The more realistic or "better" your graphics get, the less room there is for a unique style
Gotta separate realistic from 'better'. WRT "realistic" you are correct, but WRT simply better graphics (more power) there is more stylistic option, it just takes exponentially more work to do.
