I'm going to Japan for about three weeks in a few days. I'll be ending the trip in Tokyo where I plan on buying a lot of retro stuff that is either overpriced or difficult to get in Australia.

I know super potato is overpriced, but apparently its pretty popular. What are some good places to buy retro vidya in Tokyo?

Nakano broadway. It is not in akihabara and is less tourist friendly, but it is a an entire 4 floor old style shopping mall full of specialty shops, and all tax free for foreigners (as you do your shopping anything you buy gets sent to the tax free counter, and at the end of the day you pick up all your self and get your sales tax refunded if you are a foreigner).

>the retro game store, cheaper than some of the akihabara stores
>an entire store dedicated to g1 transformers
>store selling anime cells
>A store selling authentic pro wrestling masks
>a military otaku store selling WW2 uniforms, helmets, pins, etc
All kinds of crazy shit like that.

The only actual helpful post. I'll be sure to check it out, I don't mind exploring a bit and finding small retro vidya shops.

I'm also mostly after consoles and controllers more so than games. There's only a handful of games I want to get, and then just anything else that catches my eye.

Ligma is saud to be a pretty good place for retro games.

Have you even been there? Every "store" you just described are all literally the same store (Mandarake), and Mandarake is the only tax free shop in the whole building, aside from a few places on 1F that wouldn't be terribly interesting to this audience (the shoe store, a Janpara outlet).

The Mandarake game shop in Nakano kind of sucks now anyways, most of their good stock has been sold through and they don't restock often.

OP, just go to Akihabara, it isn't worth your time to spend an hour on the train each way just to go to a fucking book off outside of the city. The retro market in Tokyo is largely a bust from a buyer's perspective except for big ticket items. Foreigners cleaned the place out years ago, you're about ten years too late.

Can confirm Nakano Broadway is based if you like retro weebshit. I live two stops away on the Chuo line/40mins walking distance, ask me anything

You sound like you have some experience, do you live in Tokyo? Thanks for the heads up.

I'm also going to Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima. I'd prefer to do most of my shopping in Tokyo though but id be willing to check out stores in those areas.

Where are places to go for true r@rities? Not for resale type carts, demos, arcade PCBs, basically non-retail items in general. I know Beep Shop stocks that kind of stuff sometimes, but other than that?

I visit nakano's mall on every trip, I've been 3 times since 2012. I love that place. And yes mandarake makes up much of that mall, but it is a lot more specialized than the mandarake in akihabara. It is just really comfy shopping there as opposed to the clutter and tourism that is akiba. it resembles a western shopping mall from the 1980s, but where every shop is strange and weird and wonderful.

Also the kuroneko catmaid place on the ground floor near the one entrance is great. It is a bar that gives unlimited alcohol, 1000 yen per 30 minutes. All the while catgirl maids keep the drinks flowing and meow at you. They replace the "Ganbare!" cheer with "NyanBare!".

You're about 10 years too late. There are gaijins based in every city who buy up all the good local stock every day to resell on Evay. Sad but true.

This. I arrived in japan in 2011 and could easily find 3rd 4th and 5th gen games at any local book-off or secondhand shop. Even ps2 games seem to be drying up these days.

Akihabara has become a bit too much of a tourist trap now and prices reflect this. If you go off the beaten track you'll still find bargain bin deals though. I've always found ducking into random Book-Off stores way more lucrative or try the Super Potatos in Osaka's Namba or Taisho districts. The staff in the Namba store are super helpful but their English isn't great. If you don't speak any Japanese find a local English speaking guide.

So I did some more research, and it looks like that this is the case, which is a shame. Hopefully I can still find some good deals on consoles at book off's or hard off's but we'll see.

I'll also have a look around Osaka super potato and any Kyoto 2nd hand stores for anything.

Thanks for the help.

In terms of going there and not just buying off ebay, there isn't much in it. At least you can comfirm the condition. I got a brand new Silent Hill while there for less than what people on ebay were selling second hand

You're 15 years late. All of Akihabara's stuff was sold extremely cheaply to France, Germany, UK and North America. What's left is overpriced dregs for stupid tourists.

Just wanted to throw in there that the retro game shop in Nakano Broadway Mall has some of the best prices on loose Famicom games if you're looking for them, got Rockman 3, 4, and 5 for peanuts.

I've been to Japan three times, if you're looking for deals your best bet is to go on Google Maps and tag every Book-Off, Hard-Off and Hobby-Off in Japan. Regularly check the map when you're out and about and see which one is nearby, and check it out.

Book-Off's also carry retro game soundtracks and game guides in addition to the games themselves. I've found a ton of Konami soundtracks I've been looking for at Book-Off.

Hobby-Off isn't usually a place people look for vintage games, but they do carry them. I got Super Donkey Kong inbox last year for ¥500.

Best place to buy Jap games is Ebay, stores will increase price to turn profit, some Ebay Jap just wants to make some money on a console he no longer wants.

If you go to Japan, spend your money on thearcades, possibly consoles that will be less expensive without additional shipping, and getting exclusive shit you won't find on the internet.

You won't listen and do it a anyway of course because collectors still treat Japan like it's 1600.

Seems to be the case unfortunately.

>>5998847
This is a good idea, I'm gonna mark all the *-off stores wherever I am and have a look as I'm travelling. Mainly after at least B quality consoles so hopefully I find something good. Thanks.

>>5998970
I'm not really much of a collector, I'm just after some specific things and only a few games (ones that I'll actually play and complete). If it really is as expensive as everyone says I might end up buying some of it on ebay. Thanks.

The best accessible/common store is "Hard Off".

Their sister store "Book Off" also has retro.

Look for them in each city/neighborhood and go to as many as you can.

It's like a USA thrift store, but uniquely Japanese. All the items are lovingly plastic wrapped and stacked neatly on shelves.

And they have a ridiculously cheery theme song that they pipe into the store.

Hard Off. Back in the early 2000s, engrish.com made fun of the store name, but that is where I got most of the games I have. The junk bins had a lot of great games, but in "bad" condition which is a lot better than the "like new" condition stuff is in my country. Raid the junk bins.
