Would you emulate /vr/ on a UMPC like Samsung Q1 Ultra?

Yes, its CPU is worse than an Atom chip. Yes, it used to cost > 1000 murikan francs. BUT it has lots of BUTTONS, and a mouse stick!

I mean you could if you really wanted to. They have terrible battery life and the screens are shitty and washed out by modern standards

When I was a teenager I think I used the worst device to play NES games possible. This horrible little pocket PC, using the '''''Dpad''''' and shortcut buttons. I thought it was great.

Interesting topic. Isn't it cheaper to get a Nintendo Switch, or is that machine locked down so hard you can't put your own OS on it?

UMPCs are cheap on Ebay because they were slow as balls when new, and almost unusable now. Maybe if you can install a lightweight Linux distro but they probably have fucky drivers

Older Switches (First 12 months production ish?) are hackable and run retro shit pretty well.

All of these old devices have old LCD technology which means it's dim, has ghosting, input latency, etc.

I'd pick one up if I saw it at the thrift store or something. The novelty alone is interesting. I currently use an old 3ds for emulation, and it's pretty good up to snes/gba.

My switch falls in the "possibly patched" range. Hopefully the switch lite will serve as a catalyst for simpler (no plastic jig) homebrew methods.

That was a bit of a turd but there were some other PPCs that were decent options for portable gaming, especially for their time. I had several and the HP2210 worked pretty.

Switch is like a worse Android. Better than chink shit by a lot and even better than atom-chip stuff. However a mid level 2017 or newer Android is by and far the best for emulation. (that isn't a laptop/desktop)

UMPCs make me hot and bothered. Your best bet is a GPD Win 2.

No. just pair a modern tablet PC with a clamp-on controller that supports xinput.

There's an Ultima Underworld game that was officially released for PPC.
http://www.pixsoriginadventures.co.uk/ultima-underworld-pocket-pc/

of course it has the same problems of running DOS on an android phone/tablet w/o a keyboard or rightclicks.

I used to play NES and GB on this bad boy on the way to work back in the day. It ran most games at an acceptable level, with frameskips and slow downs, but it was still awesome it was possible.

As for the Sammy Q1 - as others have said it has a fairly shit screen and shit battery life, but it is still a very cool unit. Id recommend Posready 2009 for it, which is basically a completely stripped xp. Drivers are going to be the killer if you go with another OS.

If you dont already own it, and only want to get it for /vr/, id pass. you can get much better for cheaper. If you can get it for cheap, its definitely a fun device to play around with and then shove in a box.

Orly? I could only run java encapsulated and emulated NES games on it. And they lagged like hell. Most GB games were also unplayable with that method. Never knew if anyone made any proper Symbian OS /vr/ emulators .

I havent used it since it was current, but as far as i remember it was simple .jar install-able and could load external roms. I may be mis-remembering, and may have needed to build the roms into the jar, but pretty sure it was straight forward. For todays standards, it would be shit, but in 2008 on a tiny phone it was great. also remember not all mappers worked so no wizwar3 for me

Palm OS had a multi system emulator called LJP. http://yoyofr92.free.fr/ljp/

It was only available for Palm OS 5 devices, and even then cheaper devices like pic related didn't have the buttons to play games without using the touchscreen, nor the resolution to do anything above GB without downscaling.

Storage space was an issue, as most PDAs of the era had 32-64MB of flash memory and only the high end models had SD card support.

I'll probably have to get a Gizmondo someday as there's no emulator and a handful of games I'm keen on playing.

That said, the batteries inside almost all old handhelds are dead and nobody's making replacements.

The QD game pad is just fine. The original taco Ngage's is kind of phone-feelin'

>>5994971
People just have outrageously high standards. It's a whole "thing" to obsess more over trying to achieve absolute perfection in HOW they play their games. The physical buttons are usable, tons of people used them so it ends up being that other hot button issue we see here all the time, authenticity. These devices will always be the penultimate real - hardware way to play Symbian, Palm and PocketPC games. That matters a lot to some people and not at all to others

>>5995009
Batteries are just batteries though. Preserve the control board that was on it and replace the batteries themselves with new ones that match the voltage and physically fit the same space - which gets less and less difficult to do as batteries become more efficient and can be smaller and smaller with the same performance.

pokemon wouldn't be bad, any mobile device capable is ok for a turn-based game.

I wanna buy a UMPC even if I know they are dinky. I just would like a computer that fits in my pocket but isn't over 300 and isn't chinkshit. It's not like I go into them expecting to run Crysis or even R4 so it's not like I'm getting my hopes up for nothing.

I play sega genesis pinballs on my phone quite a bit. But usually I emulate GBA on phone mostly cause the screen and controls look closer to the original.
