This. In that chart, the only one that is any interesting is Chocobo no Fushigi na Dungeon. Even then, we got the sequel (Chocobo's Dungeon 2) and it was fairly shitty.

The truth is that there are three kinds of people:

1. Those that don't consume Japanese media other than games, and with that in mind, don't consume weeb games (such as mecha games and all that stuff).
2. Those that consume Japanese media other than games, and are weebs, and don't learn Japanese. These are the actual EOPs.
3. Those that consume Japanese media other than games, and are weebs, and go the extra mile to learn Japanese.

I've yet to hear of someone who learned Japanese *just* to play videogames. All of them do it with more aspects in mind, whether it is anime, manga, porn, films, books, or "Japanese culture" (that is, aside from entertainment media).

It's like calling someone an EOP for not learning Russian to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R., i.e. retarded.

I forgot a few others, like advancing your career if you work at a Japanese company, working as a teacher, or moving to Japan.

I didn't learn English because I "wanted" to learn English, I just did because I was (poorly) taught at school and playing games made me improve a lot on my skills. It is useful for everything I mentioned just now, but with a few significant differences: not only is everything I like to consume is produced in English or readily available in English, I'm more likely to get a job because I speak English than because I speak Japanese.

More power to those who learn Japanese, it is always useful to learn more languages. I just don't have a reason to learn it, other than "people at an online forum are making fun of me".

>I've yet to hear of someone who learned Japanese *just* to play videogames.
I'm actually in that position myself.

I initially wanted to learn in elementary school because of anime, but I've long since stopped it the hobby; I'm also under no illusion that Japan is a wonderland, so neither do I have the desire to go and meet natives.

On the other hand, it is clearly obvious to me how barren the English-language games landscape is, and how much of the Japanese offerings remain untranslated, even going back 30 years ago. I've seen some genuinely impressive games that I've never heard anyone on this absolute pleb website ever talk about, so me wanting to break out of this walled garden-prison is almost compelling enough to push me to finally do it.

The only thing that's stopping me from starting yesterday is being aware of how shit the industry as a whole is right now, and the uncertain future of worthwhile contemporary games being released any time soon, let alone some years from now. On the other hand, not knowing Japanese basically precludes me from being aware of anything other than Triple AAA schlop.

You suffer from Boomer Syndrome™, a.k.a. "there are no good games anymore and I can only buy AAA crap".

If you like Japanese games that much (and by that I mean you are obssessed with them, in the literal sense of the word) then sure, learn the language. But don't say the problem are American games because they simply aren't. Especially because what's coming over from Japan isn't particularly exciting either.
