Was there a design reason for some of the weapons in Quake to be replaced by a superior version? Aka the nailgun going to the super nailgun?
It feels like they get replaced so quickly and become obsolete for not much reason, like I should've been given the better version right off the bat anyway.
I don't think it's a problem, just wondering if there's an angle that I'm not seeing here. It doesn't feel like the difficulty of the level design goes up much when you're given them either.

Yeah, the best maps were
Imperishable Fright, For Whom It Is Reserved, and The Graveyard Shift. Graveyard being the best of the lot, pic related.
Everything else was either filler or kinda bad. I still refused to noclip though, but in the end it didn't feel worth it.
If I ever play this again next year I'm just noclipping Pumpkin Head and maybe House of Illusion and Deep Sea. Pumpkin was just so fucking bad, I don't understand how it even got accepted.

It may have been a bad map, but the secret asylum where you had to throw straight jackets on imps to render them harmless was a fun idea.
The only issues were the corridors being tiny so getting past them was a shit, and the final "fight" having you dash between two camps of imps and forcing them all to swap straightjackets. With infinite health this would have been hilarious, but its just frustrating when the only one left to free is hiding in a crowd of his liberated, angry friends.

It would be more effort than it's worth. One of the best new features of the GoldSrc engine was skeletal animations, so making them into Quake-compatible keyframed vertices would be a lot of effort.

Jedi Engine doesn't even have vertical mouselook to fuck up, nor does its level geometry have a tendency to murder the player. It was also only used for one solid game (or maybe two? Hexen's top difficulty would be the perfect way to play if only the fast monster effect also applied to the centaur's block time. So close, yet so far. Still worth trying if you found the UV equivalent boring. It's not an overly-hard joke difficulty like Nightmare, just fast monsters and 1.5x ammo. So Ettins might actually hit you and you can use your weapons more liberally.

Just because a guy pays lip service to a community request doesn't mean the suits will approve of it. At best it's just "I'll say this to make them shut up about it". Bethesda only okays mod support for Fallout and TES because they have built a reputation of "better with mods", not to mention they depend on the community to actually make their games playable. None of their other games have mod support because they don't need it, and they would cut in deeply into DLC profits, and god forbid platform specific content can be easily hacked into the PC version.

As a bonus, I played E1M8 using Scoredoom's "Bonus Pack," which adds a ton of extra shit like new monsters, powerups, usable items, and a "boss rush" mode at the end of mapsets. It's a big R667 clusterfuck that I don't really find interesting, but the creator put a lot of work into it and I figure it's worth at least showing some of it off.

Besides this is ID, not Bethesda calling the shots. ID had a close relationship with Escalation for Snapmap and it's evident their efforts didn't exactly pay off. I did some research on this before, when I thought I would make my own Quake 1 based game, and none of the classic idtech games support skeletal animations.
Although, I should note that one of the features icefrog brought to the Source Engine (now Source 2) via DOTA2 was the same vertex-based animations that Quake used. So it kinda went full circle. Funny, huh?
desu I'm glad to see vertex animation finally getting some respect. While they can be extremely limiting for basic stuff, they allow a lot more artistic expression. Look up the comparisons to Street Fighter sprites before and after they went 3D.

As another zoomer that got into Blood because of civvie, try it on Lightly Broiled, and that's when you learn to get good at it.
I played the first few levels like 10 times before I managed to learn the cadence of the game. The lower difficulties were easier, yes, but I felt like I was missing out with so fewer enemies.
Or if you want to go Peak Zoomer with Fresh Supply, just use the custom difficulty maker (lol it's called Made to Order) and do Well Done, except with the damage of Lightly Broiled.

Except Doom II has it so most of the game you have all the weapons, you don't lose them as readily as you did in Doom 1. And the chaingun is pretty much the same issue as the nailguns.

The SSG was just very overpowered. It had the power output of a rocket launcher without splash damage, readily available ammo, and the most negatable feature was usually fixed with circle strafing.

Of course, Doom 1 set an unbalanced precedent with the BFG. I absolutely hate when that weapon is included, since it is just so highly unbalanced. You can ignore it, sure, but the problem is that it is a literal easy mode button.

I was really impressed by the eeriness of a few maps, The Worship Condensate felt pretty intense and spooky. A few neat easter eggs near the start of the level, if you look up in a vent there's a spooky face, also, in the room with the open vent and a bump, if you get enough height on a jump you get sucked up and gibbed by an unseen monster. just a few neat attention to details

The main issue I have with the BFG is how it can kill even a spider mastermind in one-two shots if done properly. At best you will do 40 damage with a plasma gun, but the BFG can cause at least 4000. If it expended 100 units, it would make sense and be fair, but at 40 you are pretty much at a massive disadvantage if using the plasma cannon.

Not really. The thunderbolt causes 30 damage per second and a shambler has 600 health. That means 20 shots. The thunderbolt can't be used in water, has rare ammo, and requires accuracy. The BFG can store a lot more ammo, can be shot pretty blindly to cause a lot of damage, and has no real weaknesses. I see the thunderbolt far more akin to the plasma cannon than the BFG, meaning it is powerful but not really OP.

The difference in my eyes is the amount of user interaction, the amount of overuse it has, and how much it nerfs things if at all. Something that i noticed about new Doom fans is how there's been less care for gameplay, when older fans were either against stuff like glory kills or welcome enough that they made these Meta/D4T like mods.

Quite the opposite actually. The new titles are almost exclusively focused on the gameplay, far too much for their own good in 2016's case, even. I finally got around to the plutonia experiment and I know you're not supposed to play with freelook, but it's really starting to get to me for one reason and one reason alone.

You can't lead the rocket launcher if an enemy is above you. I use NinjaRipper to rip them, Noesis to organize/find/export ripped models, and Blender to view and edit them.
I'm currently on Quake 3 Doomguy, but it's going to take a while until I have him in a completed state because for whatever reason, whoever modeled his leg accessories decided to put both variants of his cosmetics (pouches and thigh armor) on top of each other.
I'm now in the process of going in and manually deleting every bit of the thigh armor, and once that's done, I'll have to do it all again but by deleting the pouches instead. I'd guess it'll take about 2-4 days. Hopefully his other variants don't have anything this silly.

I also have a sneaking suspicion that the SSG's popularity is what leads to too many people circlestrafing in the open against hitscanners they can't hitstun during the reload.

This dude has it. SSG straddles the line between the standard weapons of fist through chaingun and the power weapons of rocket through BFG - it deals the damage of a rocket with no fear of splash damage and uses one of the two most prevalent ammo supplies in the game. Doom 2 should have treated it with the same restraint as the rest of the power weaps, but instead they hand it to you in level fucking 2, well before they start giving you the new enemies that it's designed to deal with. Combine that with Doom 2 not having normal episodes that would force you back to default at certain points in the campaign, it basically made the SSG the new standard gun in the eyes of almost every player sans pistol starters. It's like the loudness war in music where the broader dynamics of using everything in your arsenal get shrunken down into a narrower space where the SSG solves almost everything and you only occasionally have to switch to something that it can't fix.

Then Sigil comes out and people are pissed that they can't kill everything in 2 shots.

I used to love using Oblige for the full roguelite experience but after a spell of pushing them to the side and catching up with my wad backlog I'm finding that I've completely lost the taste for soem of Oblige's "quirks". After playing so many maps with actual level design and deliberate monster placement I can't stomach anymore the cyberdemons cheesed through bars and windows, the huge flocks of cacos and revenants thrown at you when you have at most a chaingun and shotgun (even worse with the monster pack since revenants have 50% bullet resistance) and the key traps that teleport dozens of chaingunners in a minuscle room with no cover.

Quake 3 Doomguy is here for download and (hopefully functioning) use.
I fixed the leg nonsense and hooked up his normalmaps and bumpmaps (I think)
He comes in .blend and .obj formats, ready for converting to other file types.
I'll upload the version with all the cosmetic addons down the line.

If anyone here with actual, legitimate 3D modelling knowledge points out any stupid rookie mistakes, feel free to let me know so I can rectify them in future releases

What is the minimum amount of Health+Armor required to survive a direct hit+splash from a Cyberdemon rocket?

According to the Doom wiki, the damage from direct+splash goes from 148 to 288. And since blue armor reduces incoming damage by half while it lasts, then 288/2 = 144 damage will be taken by the armor, and 144 damage will be taken by health right?

So 145 Health + 144 Blue Armor should be the minimum required to survive the max damage roll, right? Or did I screw something up?

Ep 2 has the benefit of more monster variety, but most of the maps lack the same flow and momentum that Ep 1 is known for. Maybe if there had been Hell Knights to use instead of the bullet sponge Barons, it might've made for a better experience.

I did a ZScript thing that makes fast monsters not stand still like turrets but still making them slightly faster, also affects projectiles. Currently it affects every monster regardless of having a FAST keyword or not in their states as I don't know if there even is a way to check for those keywords. Similar to the relationship between Doom and Duke 3D, they're technical messes that try to compensate with lots of cool shit (where Keen is much more technically sound, if less interactive). Unlike Duke 3D, the cool shit doesn't quite outweigh how bad the engines are. Duke 2 is capped to all of 15 FPS, which is really awful when the game has so much going on at any given time. Duke 1 doesn't even have controllable jump height, and they tried to do way too much with the PC speaker so half the time even your ears are being assaulted. Both games are way too zoomed in. Music's good in 2, at least.
