Was there a design reason for some of the weapons in Quake to be replaced by a superior version? Aka the nailgun going to the super nailgun?
It feels like they get replaced so quickly and become obsolete for not much reason, like I should've been given the better version right off the bat anyway.
I don't think it's a problem, just wondering if there's an angle that I'm not seeing here. It doesn't feel like the difficulty of the level design goes up much when you're given them either.

It may have been a bad map, but the secret asylum where you had to throw straight jackets on imps to render them harmless was a fun idea.
The only issues were the corridors being tiny so getting past them was a shit, and the final "fight" having you dash between two camps of imps and forcing them all to swap straightjackets. With infinite health this would have been hilarious, but its just frustrating when the only one left to free is hiding in a crowd of his liberated, angry friends.

It would be more effort than it's worth. One of the best new features of the GoldSrc engine was skeletal animations, so making them into Quake-compatible keyframed vertices would be a lot of effort.

Hexen's top difficulty would be the perfect way to play if only the fast monster effect also applied to the centaur's block time. So close, yet so far. Still worth trying if you found the UV equivalent boring. It's not an overly-hard joke difficulty like Nightmare, just fast monsters and 1.5x ammo. So Ettins might actually hit you and you can use your weapons more liberally.

Just because a guy pays lip service to a community request doesn't mean the suits will approve of it. At best it's just "I'll say this to make them shut up about it". Bethesda only okays mod support for Fallout and TES because they have built a reputation of "better with mods", not to mention they depend on the community to actually make their games playable. None of their other games have mod support because they don't need it, and they would cut in deeply into DLC profits, and god forbid platform specific content can be easily hacked into the PC version.

M9: https://youtu.be/IdkmlPlI4NI

As a bonus, I played E1M8 using Scoredoom's "Bonus Pack," which adds a ton of extra shit like new monsters, powerups, usable items, and a "boss rush" mode at the end of mapsets. It's a big R667 clusterfuck that I don't really find interesting, but the creator put a lot of work into it and I figure it's worth at least showing some of it off.

That they ditched megatextures and opted for the traditional texture streaming method is a step in the proper direction already.

Besides this is ID, not Bethesda calling the shots. ID had a close relationship with Escalation for Snapmap and it's evident their efforts didn't exactly pay off. No sense in backing down from their decision to make it a thing again all of a sudden. Who knows, maybe they're committing to some changes under the hood to accomodate it, hence the delay.

I did some research on this before, when I thought I would make my own Quake 1 based game, and none of the classic idtech games support skeletal animations.
Although, I should note that one of the features icefrog brought to the Source Engine (now Source 2) via DOTA2 was the same vertex-based animations that Quake used. So it kinda went full circle. Funny, huh?
desu I'm glad to see vertex animation finally getting some respect. While they can be extremely limiting for basic stuff, they allow a lot more artistic expression. Look up the comparisons to Street Fighter sprites before and after they went 3D.

Except Doom II has it so most of the game you have all the weapons, you don't lose them as readily as you did in Doom 1. And the chaingun is pretty much the same issue as the nailguns.

The SSG was just very overpowered. It had the power output of a rocket launcher without splash damage, readily available ammo, and the most negatable feature was usually fixed with circle strafing.

Of course, Doom 1 set an unbalanced precedent with the BFG. I absolutely hate when that weapon is included, since it is just so highly unbalanced. You can ignore it, sure, but the problem is that it is a literal easy mode button.

The main issue I have with the BFG is how it can kill even a spider mastermind in one-two shots if done properly. At best you will do 40 damage with a plasma gun, but the BFG can cause at least 4000. If it expended 100 units, it would make sense and be fair, but at 40 you are pretty much at a massive disadvantage if using the plasma cannon.

>>5990819
Not really. The thunderbolt causes 30 damage per second and a shambler has 600 health. That means 20 shots. The thunderbolt can't be used in water, has rare ammo, and requires accuracy. The BFG can store a lot more ammo, can be shot pretty blindly to cause a lot of damage, and has no real weaknesses. NRFTL is much better than Plutonia. Plutonia is ugly,, and it's all about screwing the playee and "making him better" (not). NRFTL isn't this entitled, it's just fun, and a somewhat cinematic and adventurous experience.

>> No.5990893

DPS it definitely is powerful, but you could say each weapon is OP with one or two traits. A rocket launcher is OP since it has splash damage on top of the original shot. The difference in my eyes is the amount of user interaction, the amount of overuse it has, and how much it nerfs things if at all. OP would be more if the thunderbolt instantly killed a shambler without allowing it to attack, or could kill opponents without needing to aim at them. The DPS and nature of the plasma cannon is quite similar, so I am not exactly sure what the difference between the two in your eyes is. If anything, the plasma cannon causes more damage per shot.

The thunderbolt also has range, which you would likely argue is another thing that doesn't come into concern. Use in water can be a concern depending on the opponents in or around water.

>>5990898
Increase in map difficulty is a natural progression of mod development regardless of Plutonia's existence and this can be seen by the fact that 90s maps are a joke compared to later "hard" maps like Sunder. People have beaten Plutonia a billion times, meaning they seek bigger challenges. Not to mention even then that's not the case for the most part because most maps are just average in difficulty. Hard wads tend to stand out, not become the norm, especially with the amount and popularity of gameplay mods where these hard wads shine the most.

Something that i noticed about new Doom fans is how there's been less care for gameplay, when older fans were either against stuff like glory kills or welcome enough that they made these Meta/D4T like mods.
Like, there's a variety of opinions/reactions from the fanbase about these games, specially in the gameplay area as if there's actual discussion.
New fans are either worried about an ugly HUD, "cartoony designs" or microtransactions but in a way as if they just recently heard about it or are trying to overcompensate for something.
Or they are excited but make it feel like they don't see Eternal as a game as if there's nothing to talk about for gameplay, so it's all just recurring jokes and memes and "lore".
Either id is doing something right with gameplay or this new generation of fans don't see Doom as a "gameplay first" franchise like older fans do which feels so out of place and sometimes, they have surface opinions.
One thing is purists and elitist and shit but these people are in a whole different league that the closest to dedication is just corporate/consumerist shit.

In fact, that's probably why i dislike the idea of a Slayer's Club, the idea of an "official" site for Doom "fans".
They talk about how they've made Doom "Eternal" but in that one trailer (With uncredited content) they barely represent the aspect of Wads/mods (Which might as well be the most important part) and focus more on stuff like fanart and let's plays.
Those aren't always bad but they're not on the same league as source ports and playable content for the actual games.
It's as if someone either did poor research (Like that article about the SMM model not stating the head of the spider is a replacement because the original got destroyed during development) or there's a possiblity of Bethesda trying to redefine what makes a Doom fan, by mixing unrelated things and leading to a different idea.
MCU drone style of fans is bad for Doom, not only because of the legacy and the qualities of the fanbase but also because most of these types aren't even that knowledgeable/dedicated to the series, since they're more likely to be surface, if not, secondary fans, just showing loyality to a brand.
It's why console wars suck because people who obsess over that don't even know much about the consoles/games as if they don't actually interact with those or have passion for it.
At that point, you're not a fan, you're an unpaid advertiser.

I think in the ice bomb footage it looked less worse.
A fear i have for gameplay is if most of the new enemies lack differentiation because id were afraid to come up with something interesting or challenging in favor of "just number changes" types while the weapon/player part has more focus because the marketing dedicated that Doomguy is about the power level, not the idea of a guy going through that.

>> No.5991026

Eh, the thing is most people who get into Doom these days only play Brutal Doom and refuse to play it any other way. This is how Doom 4 and Eternal came to be. I sucks but thats the way it is.

On the flipside, some of these new players eventually get curious and try playing the base game. From what I understand Decino was one of these guys once.

Quite the opposite actually. The new titles are almost exclusively focused on the gameplay, far too much for their own good in 2016's case, even. There was little emphasis put towards exploration and level design, and other elements like monster hierarchies, interesting monster mechanics and placement/balance were all kinda thrown under the bus for the most part to accommodate the arena style gameplay.
They seem to be looking to right the wrongs with Eternal and actually reinforce the map design and ways to traverse the maps for one, and they seem to have introduced monsters with more varied attacks and patterns, some allowing to be disarmed, others teleporting behind the player, all the while the pressure units push in on you.

We've actually seen far less arena lockdowns in every piece of footage thus far than we've seen in your average 2016 level so I'm not that worried. I know for a fact gunplay will be far more interesting than it was before, I'm only concerned about imaginative enemy placement and how they're going to come up with interesting ways to keep the experience from getting stale.

Oh yeah, it did. Their infighting system was just so elaborate and nuanced to the point where it was very hard to cause it to happen, and it was also unreliable. All you had to do was walk up to the dudes and that would break up the fight and they'd target you again.

Other times I've seen it happen all of a sudden. I figure with how chaotic shit gets, they wouldn't want ever enemy to turn on each other first notice. But that would actually make the game a lot more fun and engaging. Hope they tweak the system to make it less restrained.

You can't lead the rocket launcher if an enemy is above you. This comparison strikes me as odd, not just in regards to Quake. I can understand the forgiving amount of ammo, but you can't compare it solely to a rocket without considering the rate of fire. You can cause way more damage more quickly with a rocket launcher, every time. The splash is also a bit of a plus when it's not in your face, the only thing really balancing it aside from ammo drops.
I also have a sneaking suspicion that the SSG's popularity is what leads to too many people circlestrafing in the open against hitscanners they can't hitstun during the reload.

This dude has it. SSG straddles the line between the standard weapons of fist through chaingun and the power weapons of rocket through BFG - it deals the damage of a rocket with no fear of splash damage and uses one of the two most prevalent ammo supplies in the game. Doom 2 should have treated it with the same restraint as the rest of the power weaps, but instead they hand it to you in level fucking 2, well before they start giving you the new enemies that it's designed to deal with. Combine that with Doom 2 not having normal episodes that would force you back to default at certain points in the campaign, it basically made the SSG the new standard gun in the eyes of almost every player sans pistol starters. It's like the loudness war in music where the broader dynamics of using everything in your arsenal get shrunken down into a narrower space where the SSG solves almost everything and you only occasionally have to switch to something that it can't fix.

Then Sigil comes out and people are pissed that they can't kill everything in 2 shots.

What is the minimum amount of Health+Armor required to survive a direct hit+splash from a Cyberdemon rocket?

According to the Doom wiki, the damage from direct+splash goes from 148 to 288. And since blue armor reduces incoming damage by half while it lasts, then 288/2 = 144 damage will be taken by the armor, and 144 damage will be taken by health right?

So 145 Health + 144 Blue Armor should be the minimum required to survive the max damage roll, right? Or did I screw something up?

Similar to the relationship between Doom and Duke 3D, they're technical messes that try to compensate with lots of cool shit (where Keen is much more technically sound, if less interactive). Unlike Duke 3D, the cool shit doesn't quite outweigh how bad the engines are. Duke 2 is capped to all of 15 FPS, which is really awful when the game has so much going on at any given time. Duke 1 doesn't even have controllable jump height, and they tried to do way too much with the PC speaker so half the time even your ears are being assaulted. Both games are way too zoomed in. Music's good in 2, at least.
