Start them off playing with a simple d-pad controller like the Nes or Snes; I started mine off with Super Mario All-Stars. I didn't buy my kid a tablet like I think most parents do now days. My son asked a few months ago to play a game on my phone and he put it down after like 15min because he didn't like playing with a touch screen. I have modern and retro consoles and I don't think my son really understands the difference yet, I think to him they're just games. He just knows he likes to play the "sideways" games because "he knows what to do".

It's still a problem on some cases sure, but not nearly as big of a one as it's made out to be, and even then there's infinitely more flexibility on what you can make today than boiling it down to how many tits you can acceptably shove into your game. The answer is that it's still and continues to be a lot.

My 6 yr old loves playing the snes and genesis emulators on my modded xbox. He mostly likes the fighting and beat em up games. There's no forcing it, he eagerly looks forward to my days off so we can play golden axe and streets of rage together. It's truly one of those emotional, proud parent moments when he asks me to play games like kirby all stars with him.
He still likes the typical stuff like minecraft and smash brothers. But kids don't have the bias until society and peer pressures forces it on them. Ignore the permavirgins talking shit about stuff they will never have, like a wife and kids

My nephew was watching videos of old Mario games on YouTube and was showing me a 3D model of an N64 in a 3DS game he was playing and was asking me if I own one of these. I told him yeah and he was like, "oh I would like to play N64 games too".
He's quite fond of playing Mario 64 once I set it up for him to play a few times.
