You don't need it, no. Its sole purpose is to trivialize the final boss and serve as a plot device to set up the second game. It is kinda cool to see it tear shit up.

Is Turok even good? I remember renting this and Castlevania 64 for a week back in my childhood and I have no memories of even playing Turok so it really must have sucked.

Turok is great. I replayed it last year and had a blast.

Turok 2 is the one that runs in single digits, Turok 1 is pretty responsive, has great animation, cool design, cool music.

I played it for the first time this year and I think it's great. The controls are strange, but not bad.

The only flaw with the game is, if you get caught on a piece of geometry, you build momentum and go flying once you get loose. Makes mandatory platforming a pain.

Should I play the Turok remake or the original N64 version for my first playthrough? I hate using the N64 controller and much prefer the using a keyboard and mouse.

I haven't played the remake myself but from what I've seen/heard remake is the way to go, especially if you don't like the N64 controller for FPS (can't say I blame you).

There's like one graphical downgrade with a nuke weapon that someone was posting about, but all things considered that seems like a small tradeoff.

OP here, just finished Turok 1 today. That last level was pretty wild. And I liked how the end of level 7 felt like you were assaulting a fortress. The final boss was fine, he wasn't too hard. I thought the first boss you fight after the jeeps was harder.

Started Turok 2. It's pretty cool. Just finished the first level except for one thing which I think requires a power-up from another level. The games runs pretty slow though, and takes up a shitload of data on the memory card.

The cliff wampas never bothered me much except for the hidden ones, but yeah the sewer level is pure nightmare fuel. Pic related on a CRT with the brightness turned down a bit is seriously frightening, coupled with the floaty jetpack mechanics, it's a truly unsettling experience. Pretty fucking cool.

I didn't know it did more damage, but I knew it seemed to hit it more than the other guns.

When I played the game when I was little, I had to turn the sound off because the sound the little dianogas make was scary. For some reason IG-88 didn't bother me, but listening to it now I can see how he could spook people.

When I was like 6 or 7 I played this with my friend Alex and we opened the cheat menu and turned disco mode on. That makes all the enemies dance and not attack you, except for the bugs. And then Alex says to me :

This game scared the hell out of me too. Some of the enemies, but also all the damn platforming. I'm pretty sure this game gave me a fear of heights.

I bought the remake on Xbox One and beat it. The fog is much less of a problem. Aside from that the visuals just seemed generally better. I liked being able to use the xbox controller. The N64 controller feels so weird these days.
