Super Metroid vs Symphony of the Night, fight to the death. Who would win?

>> No.5979881

super metroid is widely said to be the best SNES game ever. symphony of the night is not even in the top 10 in most opinions. im not agreeing with it but why is that?

Super Metroid has better gameplay and better graphics. It also has no shitty RPG mechanics.

Why wouldn't it and why would you be surprised by this? DKC2 looks better than every platformer on the Playstation, too.

There are a few parts of Symphony that do look great, like the stairway in the beginning, but overall, it looks like that pic in the OP; very flat and visually boring.

Super Metroid is the best designed game ever made. SoTN's gameplay is unbalanced, unfocused, extremely easy even without any sort of cheese, the level design is a mess and the RPG """"""""""system"""""""""" is awful. El oh el my man. What the hell?
>Damage sponge enemies
You literally need to git gud. Learn enemy weaknesses (not just patterns, but which type of element and physical weapon are most effective against them). The information is always displayed to you on the top screen.
Note: poisoning most enemies turns them into total pushovers.
And I never had to grind for glyphs like I would souls in Dawn. Only a fraction of them are actually hard to get, and you can get by without them desu.
>Platforming
Aside from CotM, none of the Metroidvanias have interesting platforming. It’s always been about the enemy layout and exploration. OoE does the the former the best, but I do wish it was a less fragmented. The areas are beautiful and at the time it was a welcome change to a kinda stale formula. When revisiting the game however I feel like if they had made it a Simon’s Quest-esque journey to Dracula’s castle, and Dracula’s castle was at least the same size as in the other Metroidvanias, then OoE would be the best game in the series hands down.

Meh. Even going with the right attacks I still found the whole thing just felt like a chore. I wanted to like it, Shonoa was cool and the game looks great but I found it so boring. I wouldn't call myself a huge fan of the series in general though. DoS was also quite dull though I liked the extra mode. CotM is my favorite of the metroidvanias and PoR is decent gameplay wise but I don't love most of the aesthetic.

Maybe not of all time but I agree Super Metroid is good at best. Rose colored glasses save it. Without a guide, without any way to look up what you're doing wrong it's easy to get stuck wandering around trying to find a way to places. The superbomb in the tunnel, how ass wall jumping is before you finally figure out how, forgetting the stupid map room because it's been pink since you started. Game is full of bad design that you forget is bad because you've played it 30 times or have a walkthrough open.

I've just recently completed both for the first time and I preferred SOTN overall. I wanted to like Metroid more though, it should have been better.
The map in Metroid is just tedious by the time you hit later parts of the game. It's the fact they decided it was a good idea to have a labyrinthine map layout, which is fine in of itself, but on top of that many of the rooms are just filled with obstacles, clutter and secret entrances. it maybe wouldn't have been so bad if the minimap was slightly more forgiving with info or something. I feel like overall they should have went with secret entrances or labyrinth layout, not both.
The Ridley fight also just sucks dick, if you don't have enough super missiles by the time you get down there you gotta backtrack like a motherfucker.

Charge shots bitchboy, you found all the beam upgrades didn't you? Or did you get lost but still somehow not find the hidden goodies? I can understand getting lost and going the wrong way, leading you to little goodies like missile tanks and other bonus upgrades, but getting lost and just backtracking through shit just sounds like you're stupid and weren't paying attention to the rooms you went through.

I agree that SM is needlessly cryptic in some aspects (see the missle containers that appear only by shooting out some random section of unmarked wall that you wouldn't think to x-ray) but the tube in Maridia isn't one of them. It's the best/fastest way to get through the section but there's a literal elevator from the Wrecked Ship that takes you there, and entering Maridia when you get to the tube screen if it's not broken, you'll land on top of it which clearly indicates that it's breakable.

I had this port. If you don't think hardware plays any role in video game AI, play this. So much memory goes to the game assets that the CPU does nothing but stand idle and let itself get hit no matter the difficulty. Furthermore, all the instruments are MIDI harmonica and the game has load times every time a round starts. Next time someone asks "is there such a thing as a 'so bad it's good' video game," post this game.

Super Metroid might be a better game, but SotN is the one I keep coming back to year after year. Maybe you can get really into the speedrunning or something, but there's a pretty set way to play through SM.

SotN is a lot more freeform, and really rewards experimentation and player creativity. You can totally break the game if you really want to, but the flip side is that you can also let yourself do some awesome challenge runs just for the fun of it... and you can actually make it work! My last run through the game was a 99 luck fist weapons only playthrough and I had a grand time. It's a big difference from super metroid where any kind of limited equipment selection might mean you need to spend hours perfecting specific sequence breaking tricks.

To me, it just makes SotN so much more appealing to come back to. With just a little ingenuity there are all sorts of ways around every problem.

I think Super Metroid is the better game overall: I played them both less than a month ago, so I don't have to rely on old, vague memories. However, Symphony of the Night might have aged better, gameplay-wise.
If you play Fusion, and especially Zero Missiom, you instantly realize how clunky and dated Super Metroid feels, while SotN still feels reasonably close to modern Castlevania titles.
Now, you could also say that Metroid evolved, while Castlevania did not, but that's now how I personally felt. Super Metroid definitely shows its age more than SotN does, at least to me.
