If anyone is interested, a new version of Remix got released:
https://github.com/JSsixtyfour/smashremix/releases/tag/0.9
Besides some minor fixes, the new characters (Doc, Ganon, Young Link and Falco) have their own slots now, so nobody is gonna be replaced anymore.
Also feel free to talk about the original Smash64, Sector Z is best stage

I wish Smash 64 was more popular. Melee is a good game but the combos in Smash 64 make it a really interesting and unique game. It's a bit bare bones, but with all the crap that's being added to it its really becoming more fun on a casual level. Competitively I think having 1 stage probably turns people off, but if you get past that you have a really fun game where all the characters are fun to play and freedom that's only a notch down from Melee, but makes up for it with its unique, creative combo system.

Also the community really has a heart of gold for making all this custom content.

A mod that's currently working on adding new characters and stages to the game.
Right now they have 4 new characters: Doc, Ganon, Young Link and Falco, and from what I got they're gonna add Lucas and Dark Samus later on.
>competitive sets
I don't think so

Smash 64 feels like a one-of-a-kind game, the subsequent entries could never replicate it, and indeed the last three games are more or less the same game. Smash 64 was a product of its time and it shows.

Does this work on real hardware though?

I’m gonna sound like “that guy” in every Smash thread complaining about tryhards but seriously, the focus on technicality and making it play more like a real fighting game was a mistake.

I mean, although Smash is technically a Kirby game I always thought of it as a Mario game in the same vein as like Mario sports. Like if you want an authentic fighting game experience you should not be looking to Smash. Smash should be an imbalanced mess with fluky shit happening, not some Final Destination No Items BS.

This is how I feel about the game. I play it kind-of competitively with friends and it's such a blast. Every fucking move could be letal.

But at the same time the next games were too safe and they added more content than simplicity.

Quick question, first. Are Falcon Punches effective at treating teen pregnancies?

Kirby is the mascot of Smash. They have the same creator so everything has a vague Kirby vibe. Once you realize this the whole presentation makes more sense. This is also why in Ultimate’s story mode you start as Kirby, etc.

The basic controls scheme of Smash can be traced back to Kirby Superstar. You have the same kind of normal/neutral attacks, then also the "smash" attacks with the added directionals.
I was surprised when I played Superstar for the first time recently and noticed all the similarities.
Even one of the bosses is literally Master Hand, but with an actual (nigga) face.

High level Smash 64 is entertaining as shit to watch. Both players know exactly what the opponent needs to do to start a kill combo, so it's an entire game of players throwing feints at each other while trying to keep each other out of their advantageous position. It reminds me a lot of competitive Virtua Fighter.
