My favorite (OP) is Mega Man 2. It put Mega Man on the map, boasts the best roster of enemies, and has the best soundtrack. Mega Man 3 is right behind it though. These two swap positions depending on the day if you ask me.

Mega Man 2. Its the easiest to get into and it was the entry that made me realize why people love it so much. Didn't know much about the game going in besides that it was the favorite of the NES bunch 20 years after it released and it was a blast. Hearing Dr. Wily 1 for the first time was like hearing Chemical Plant, One Winged Angel, or S.O.R. Super Mix for the first time. Had to pause the game to take it in.

Of the six original games I would rate 4 as the best. I overall feel it is the most consistent in quality in regards to level design. With games like 2 and 3 I feel the Wily levels are pretty disappointing.

Overall I think my favorite game is actually Megaman & Bass. I seem to be one of the few who really enjoys it. My only real gripe being the level select system.

Until 9 came out and became the masterfully crafted masterpiece that it is....

4 was the one with the most consistent quality. The one that remains good throughout the entire game (unlike 3, which may have better 8 initial robot master stages but which drops the cake after that), which doesn't have any BS moment (unlike 2), which is still challenging but fair (unlike 5-6).

BTW Battle Network 4.5 just got a fan translation

I like 1-4 about the same. 3 is probably my favourite.
2 is obviously the most popular just because "normal" mode is actually easy mode, which is kind of a shame.
I played through 1-6 one after another so honestly most of them just blur together, all I really remember is that 1 is way better than it gets credit for and 5-6 were the weaker ones.

3, with 9 coming extremely close. Both had extremely solid level design and great music, especially the former. The only flaws I can find with 3 is the difficulty nose dive in the castle stages. And 9 had actual difficulty, not like the broken mess 2 was.

3 technically had 25 Robot Master fights, which justified the $40 I payed for it as a kid. It felt like a bigger game that 2, plus it had Rush.

I'll never forgive the 2 fanboys for influencing Capcom to take away charge shots and sliding in MM9 and 10.

Sliding is barely useful in MM5/6. There is barely any enemy moves designed with it in mind.

The charge shot and the way it's designed also completely ruined MM5 and 6. There is a reason why in MM7 it only deals 2 dmg, they knew they had fucked up and had no idea how to fix it.

Finally, it's not "taken out" if it's not designed with it in mind to begin with. The slide never feels like it's "missing" in MM9/10, and with no charge shot you have much more franticand skillfull boss fights.

2 is my favorite even though I acknowledge it has problems. It's one of the first video games I ever played and had a huge impact on me.

MM4 is probably the best game in the classic series overall since it made Mega Man's moveset feature-complete and still boasted a good set of boss characters before series fatigue started becoming more obvious. The only real problem MM4 has is how slow boss health bars fill up but thankfully there's now a romhack to fix that.

For someone who wants to play every original game what is the best way to do it? Are the NES versions emulated better than the collections? (Genesis, PS2, Steam)

>> No.5993201

>>5993196
NES emulation while setting overclocking for lag reduction and no sprite limit for reduced sprite flicker.

There are also a bunch of romhacks for the NES games which make the experience better, however most of them only work with the Jap versions:

For MM3, there is "Improvement" which gets rid of all lag, fixes a lot of glitches, and also has some other additions/changes which you may or may not like
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/992/

For Rockman 4 (doesn't work with MM4), lag reduction patch, there are two patches, one "standard" lag reduction, and another one which also changes other things like being able to switch weapons on the fly (but also gets rid of the autoscroll sections...)
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock4Optimization_v3.zip

For Rockman 5, but these ones also works with MM5. Lag reduction patch:
http://www.himaq5.xyz/rock5easily/archive/rock5_lite.zip
Lets you switch weapons on the fly (select, down+select, select+start):
http://www.himaq5.xyz/rock5easily/archive/rock5_weaponselect.zip

Rockman 6 (does not work with MM6):
Lag reduction patch but also speeds up the process of many things, like loading times, scrolling when entering a room, etc:
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock6Optimization101.zip
Fixed sliding. In the original MM6, and unlike other MM games, you couldn't jump during a slide, plus there is a small delay, wait time, at the end of a slide. This fixes both:
http://www.geocities.jp/borokobo/zip/Rock6FixSlide2.zip
With both patches applied, RM6 becomes 100% more fun.

Mega Man X3: fully playable Zero, but also makes the game better if you play as X, by getting rid of the delay when firing several charge shots, and by making level progression less linear (you can use a battle armor as soon as you have the tanks for it, and Zero can charge subweapons even without the upgrade, thus letting you open up levels in a less linear way):

I like 3 cause it felt like a real advancement in scope after 2, just like 2 was to 1.

The problems people have with the game just never bothered me.

The ones after kinda felt like a let down, like they plateau'd. By no means bad though.
