FACT: all kirby games suck, except the golf one and Air Ride.

I have played all of them. They all are bland as fuck. The only reason to play kirby games is for the music and charm of the character's designs, gameplay wise they suck.

A majority of n64 titles recieved poor reviews and are constantly called mediocre. I personally love "mediocre" because they usually have redeeming qualities. Yoshi Story and Bomberman Hero come to mind. I love games were you collect fruits, gems and find hidden bonus secrets.

It's an OK game. Would probably be held in higher regard as a 5th gen 2D game if it wasn't a sequel to Yoshi's Island, which it couldn't live up to.

Back in the day I guess I kinda enjoyed Kirby 64, but going back to it as an adult, I have a greater appreciation for the slight use of that New Age feel that they snuck into it.

I much preferred how powerups had actual move sets in Super Star. Also it was more visually appealing how Kirby took on a costume of the enemy he swallowed. Power combination was a let down in terms of moveset and look of Kirby.
Also sucked it was two player, had fun exploring great cave offense and milky way wishes with a friend back then

It's a much better game than KDL3 and powers are actually useful, but for a Kirby game it winds up as just "Pretty all right". It's stupidly short so you could knock it out pretty fast if you wanted to give it a shot, the only tricky part are the collectibles that require a specific ability combination for. It's worth playing just for the ability combination mechanic being pretty fun.

It's like they didn't understand the core mechanics of the game.

Once you've seen all the different synergies, there is no reason to not grab the fireball synergy and blast through the level holding left + B

Let's face it, kirby games are aimed at children.
K64 had great music though.

I usually don't comment on a game's framerate but Vortex is one of the only games where I think it's the most important reason why the game sucks. No matter how fast you're trying to be, you can NEVER be fast enough to change forms in time when you try to beat the first boss. They tried so hard with the music, the transformations and the whole "DUUDE IT'S 3D ON THE SNEEEESSS!" schtick but the low dipping framerate makes it close to unplayable. Seriously, I don't think it was more than 5 FPS at any time. Even Perfect Dark or Banjo-Tooie had a better performance and yes those are on a next gen console but that's all the more reason why they should've waited with games like Vortex until 3D became more stable on consoles.

I actually felt Triple Deluxe was the best Kirby game since Super Star. If you feel the newer games just don't hold the same magic as the retro era games, fine. But still, that just means they're not as good in the end, but that doesn't translate to 'bad'. I've played every Kirby game except for that Wii U one, and never once have I gone, "I don't like this."

>Let's face it, kirby games are aimed at children.
No shit. The entire reason this game used the D-pad was because small children had a harder time reaching the analog. Sakurai SAID this. It's also the reason Air Ride uses such a simple control scheme. But, contrary to what the average gatekeeping turbonerd would have you believe, "easy" or "simple" does not mean "bad." Nor does it confer a lack of one's appreciation for harder games, either.

Triple Deluxe was pretty decent and a solid game but god damn, Robobot was incredible and dethroned Super Star as my favorite Kirby despite having tons of nostalgia for it. Star Allies was a letdown like that other anon noted though.

To keep this post /vr/ related, I'll also note that Kirby used to be more hit and miss, with the Sakurai directed games (Which is the direction spirit they've kept in recent times) being way better than the other offerings. The spinoffs have always somehow been consistently good however.

>"easy" or "simple" does not mean "bad."

I disagree: "Easy" does means bad. "Simple" doesn't.

See, a game that it's easy, it's easy because only 2 reasons: It was made easy on purpose (games aimed at children for example) or because the developers didn't fully exploited the core mechanics of the game, either because they didn't understood their own creation, or simply because they didn't care (bad developers)

Either way, an easy game is a game that doesn't reach a high level of execution on it's gameplay nor does shows a good understanding of the mechanics, and that makes it bad. A bad game can have awesome music, awesome art, awesome presentation, but if the gameplay is bland, the game is bad.

Now, a simple game can be a game like SSB Melee which it's an easy to play game but the core gameplay can get really deep when a competent player grabs the controller. TF2 also comes to mind.
