What's the best controller for 2D games?
OEM, modern, repro, third party, whatever. Just looking for "the best".

>> No.5962447

Whatever some annoying tard on youtube tell you is best. Intelligent gainfully employed adults just use the right controller for whatever they're playing.

Do any controllers in a SNES-like form-factor have D-pad microswitches?
There's the neo geo pad yes, but they're expensive second hand and quite fragile (so probably broken if you're buying second hand), and probably hard to get working.

>> No.5964456

>>5963976
>quite fragile
Nah. I don't know why so many youtubers say this. Maybe there was a problem with the US ones or maybe they just need an excuse to make a video. All the master race Japanese ones I've seen were in good condition and work fine.

>> No.5964542

>>5964456
Nope, they're essentially a consumable resource. Every single click slowly warps these tiny metal pads on each microswitch, and eventually they give out completely. Unless you've got a brand new controller, you'll notice that the 'up' microswitch has a completely different feel to the left/right/down, because you click up comparatively less often in fighting games. Try it.

>> No.5964671

>>5964542
Those "tiny metal pads" are called domes and they're used in all kinds of microswitches and generally rated for 1 million cycles. Just like all the millions of other devices that use them that you're not complaining about being "flimsy". I leave it to you to reference the frame data and work out how many months of of doing nothing but pressing up in a fighting game 24 hours a day that is.

>> No.5966197

>>5966125
I like it. It's mushier than I prefer a d-pad to be, but it's fine.

It's a huge pain to play on, though, because the X and A buttons are hard to leave your thumb on the way you might want to. The top buttons are too small and the bottom ones too recessed.

>> No.5966353

Fits like a glove for my thumb. The chunk of my thumb goes on A and the tip of my thumb goes on X. I prefer that the buttons have different elevations because my thumb isn't a straight line.

Is there a half-decent alternative to the Hori GameBoy Player pad for GameCube?
Those things are like $200 on eBay.

The only other thing available seems to be those raphnet SNES pad adapters, which apparently add a frame of lag.

This thing. It's kind of big but the buttons are perfect. I've beaten countless games with this controller. It's perfect for all SNES games and PSX games that don't use the analog sticks.

I'll second this, I have a USB saturn pad that's very nice, and I also like Nintendo's classic pad pro for other things. You can find qanba q1 sticks cheap online and I think they are quite good as a budget stick.

Finally, I will say that I like clearly superior technologies for their trackball, though I haven't found one with the weight to match Atari balls. I don't have any good tornado spinner to suggest, any tempest templars wanna help me out there?

USB pad has some problems, the shoulder buttons aren't cloned and are very bad, d-pad and buttons aren't using the same type of contacts so you can't switch them on a old and used OG SS pad.

>> No.5972607

>>5972480
The SN30Pro+ has the same d-pad as the Switch pro controller, with the same misinput issues, and as such people fixed it with the tape mod.
But I think they may have revised it since release to be better, since I don't hear as many complaints anymore.
The M30's dpad is boss as fuck, though.

>> No.5974481

How do you find it?
I feel like the elevation on the D-pad combined with the springiness of the rubber domes beneath introduces a bit of a delay between pushing down and the button actuating. The D-pad's cardinal struts are also a bit far apart for my liking. Taken together it feels cumbersome to use.

It's a far-cry from the PS Vita's D-pad, which has a very small depression:actuation ratio plus a delightful mix of tactility and mush. I wish I could get a full-sized controller with a pad like the Vita's.
