>Try to keep things /vr/ related: Focus should be on 5th Gen (+Dreamcast) games on back. Slight off topic is fine so long as it's related to CRTs, such as later 16:9 models, HD models, etc. Systems with backwards compatibility are also safe territory, as are re-releases on newer hardware. PC CRTs are also welcome and appreciated.
>Produce OC! Bust out your camera and take photos of your CRTs displaying all sorts of games, featuring all sorts of tubes, using all sorts of signals. Getting good shots can be hard, but if you take enough, at least a few will turn out alright. Tips'n'Tricks™ coming soon.
>Try and give as much information as possible when asking for info on a specific set, or troubleshooting an issue to expedite and help you may receive. As always, Google is your friend and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either; Seriously, there's literally 6 years of backlog at this point.
>Share appreciation for other's choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. Always remember to show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Limited discussion of video processing and scaling devices is alright, but remember to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories.

I got a 100hz CRT TV boys, picking it up tomorrow.

Did I fuck up? I've heard from a friend that 100hz CRT's can give you input lag, is that true?

It's a Loewe btw.

>> No.5960256

>>5960221
It will have input lag but usually not a huge amount. It might not properly handle 240p/288p sources. The 100Hz will make motion less clear for 50/60FPS games. On the plus side it won't have the 15kHz whine and they're often better build quality.

>> No.5960383

>>5960221
>>5960256
100Hz sets will display 240p properly. Maybe not the late widescreen ones, but most will. 100Hz sets, especially Sonys, are higher quality since they were more desired back then due to no flicker nor whine.

Anyone with some decent technical knowledge...is the kHz rating of a given monitor specific to the physical tube that is inside of that monitor?
Where I'm going with this is could you take the physical CRT out of, say, a 31kHz PC monitor, hook it into the electronics assembles of something 15kHz, and actually get scan on it? If it *doesn't* work, what is the worst that can happen, damage to the electron guns or something? I really want to understand better how the frequency of the electronics relates to the physical assembly of the cathode tube itself, but haven't been able to find much info and haven't been brave enough to just *try it* and see what happens.

Unlikely, given that Zenith was a US brand and the PC-98 scans at 24 kHz anyway. Back then monitors used all sorts of weird connectors, and you often had to buy cables specific to your computer and monitor combination. Based on what incomplete schematics I found and my semi-educated guesses, I would start at connector E on the main board and work your way back to the RGB connector with a multimeter.

It's possible you could damage it, but rather unlikely.
At least get a voltmeter. Oscilloscope preferred. Ground to the shell of the connector, do a continuity test to see what pin is ground.
Then with your ground secured start probing the pins for voltage. When you find your 5v/whatever, mark that one as one to NOT plug into your tv. Check all the pins, don't assume only one power wire.
Then it should be safe to do what you were suggesting to figure out the signals.

You can skip the continuity between ground pin and shell thing, if you follow the traces on the PCB and visually see where they connect.

That is pretty nice looking for composite, in the arcade sense. Usually an arcade monitor would look blurry because it wasn't in great shape though.
Of course they were usually consumer TV tubes with special inputs, so that can't have helped.

Anyway I'd say you found a pretty good condition consumer set, at least where it counts. Colors might be a little different than what I like from my NES, but it's close and the clarity/dot pitch is quite good in that satisfyingly retro sense.
Reminds me a little of my Apple monitor, but this looks slightly clearer than my monitor and is also larger.

Have you considered getting red automotive paint, black paint, and potentially some glass/well polished acrylic? I think that might make a nice looking pseudo-Sharp X1 screen if you painted it.

Or you could just paint it black or something.

You'll like it.
Composite is fine for NES in my opinion though. I know RGB looks nicer, but since the hardware doesn't make RGB I'm happy to use that as an excuse to stick with composite. It does have quite sharp composite video due to some trickery with the subcarrier waveform.

whats the best type of CRTV to play NES on?

>> No.5964103

It's CRT TV, anon. CRT=cathode ray tube. And the answer, if you want the classic games to look as they were intended, is to play on a regular CRT TV of almost any brand, but I recommend Magnavox for late '90s and early 2000s. OTHERWISE, if you fall for "shadow masking" you'll end up with a look similar to modern LCD with undesirable results.
tl;dr look for a consumer grade CRT TV of circa 1995-2000 if you can. The later will usually have S-Video, RGB, composite, component, and RF inputs too.

Last month I picked up for free a Sony Wega someone brought to the States from Japan. It's model number is KV-29DS1. Whats cool about this tv is that it takes component video through a D-terminal connector (component cable with a weird japan vga looking connector) and rgb! Sony made a special cable to hook ps1 and ps2 rgb straight to these Wega sets but the Japanese figured out you can make a jp21 breakout cable pretty easily. This picture and sound on this set is fucking great. Best picture I've seen on a consumer set desu.

So this is what a black screen on my Zenith Space Command from 1989 looks like. Now I know I'm dealing with a simple RF only signal here, but I know that it didn't used to look THIS bad just months ago, and I've owned this tv for about 2 years now and I've gotten some use out of it. But it's really affecting my enjoyment when playing my NES or watching tapes there's just a layer of fine static over the image, making it look worse than RF already does by default.
Is there anything I can do to adjust the image, outside of sending it to a local repair shop?

strange, but alright. If that's the case you'll need some BNC cables with female ends, then cut and strip the wire and screw them into the phoenix adapters. Really would've just made more sense to go with RCA for audio.

Alternatively use BNC-RCA adapters and then you can use stripped female RCA cables for the phoenix adapters, which would be a lot easier to get a hold of.

Read-alarm dryness...such boredom.
All of it can be simplified to say:
>Shit's out of sync, bra because the game was 'tarded to begin with and LCDs are 'tarded too. And shit is still slower than using a CRT."

Hated the video, it felt like punishment, but it is highly informative, so plus one there.
One final thought on Melee players and this issue specifically: I don't believe for a second that any of you can perceive the times you claim. Sure, you see the results, and yes, you ingeniously expressed the math, but no, there is no way most of you are quick-draws, who are fast enough to detect your silly 16.67ms madness, or less.

I have a 1994 Sony XBR 27" CRT. Has composite and S-video. Nothing wrong with it short of the menu text that bounce (old caps is my guess) once an image appears on the screen the bounce stops, no shimmering that I can spot or abnormal vertical movement.

Does have the remote and the original manual. It's basically flawless. I'm offering it up for FREE. I got it free and I'm passing it on.

If you live in Wisconsin and near the Green Bay area, get at me and we'll set up something. I can deliver it for decent coffee.

Hey groovy dudes. Got a 5" JVC Tm-22EG for my desk at my flat, 'cos I have no room for any of my larger sets.
Running emulators via a Wii through composite and it's odd, the colours are pretty nice and obviously the motion is excellent but it has an odd problem with bloom, wherein if the contrast is turned up too high the images distort at the corners and it overscans quite hard. As a result it then fails to resolve the full resolution as you can see here. Limiting brightness and or/contrast can solve this, but does anyone know why this might be happening?

I agree that it's not the be-all-end-all, but it's not the tube of the FV310 that makes it special, it's the high-voltage regulator that it's equipped with, which reduces blooming and makes scanlines slightly more pronounced, which some people like. AFAIK, this was the only consumer set that Sony put that circuitry in, and that feature was otherwise exclusive to their professional monitors.
I agree with you that anon shouldn't spend an arm and a leg to move it, but there's no reason that it should cost anything to move it. Reach out to friends or neighbors, say thanks with food and hospitality.

Crt question here, I picked up a new one that I found at a thrift store and it has this weird thing where if nothing is being displayed the screen is green. I've looked around and can't seem to find anything on this but I'm assuming it's some kind of power saving feature so that you know when the TV's on (it's also a lot less green than it looks in the photo to the naked eye). There's absolutely no issues when it's supposed to be displaying something, either way does anyone else have one that does this? And/or do you know for sure why it does this?

Honestly, if I can hire a pro for $100ish, I might go for it. Basically, I live in a house that's 100 years old+ and the stairwell, while it will accomodate it width wise, has a lot of woodwork that CANNOT get damaged or scuffed up by amateurs who are prone to having something like this slip out of their hands, it's already gotten a couple chips on the case from that on the way into the house. My best free or free ish idea is

>acquire dolly
>position set face down on said dolly
>secure with straps
>slowly roll up stairs with 2 people

Really though, the big thing is, I need to be pretty sure that once it's up here, I'm not gonna want it to leave for a long time, and that's something that I don't have a lot of certainty about.

>> No.5975238

>>5975198

Panasonic loved to do this with their VCRs, the colored (blue in their case) screen would mask snow on non-tuned channels or shaky/noisy video from poorly tracked videocassettes. I never saw a Toshiba TV automatically go green though, and I've owned several with the same exterior appearance as the one in the pic.

>> No.5975263

>>5975225
Do you HAVE to put it upstairs?
I think the dolly idea could be a pretty solid bet, but if you go for the dolly idea, just make absolutely sure that you pad the glass extremely well. Use a very soft, clean blanket against the screen, and pillows between the blanket and the metal bars of the dolly. You might even find a piece of particle board to put between the dolly and the pillows so that the weight is distributed across a greater area.

>> No.5975376

>>5975225
Ouch, hardwood stairs rarely take to dollys well. If you do this, be sure to use a runner rug that's wide enough to accommodate the wheels and sleds on the back of the dolly without being slippery or in the way of the person(s) pulling(/pushing) it up. If that provides inadequate protection for your stairs, I'd recommend an outdoor winch & pulley system to hoist it through a window or balcony door. Metal or concrete outdoor stairs though, no problem, just wrap the TV well and truck that thing right up.

If the stairs are carpeted though, just one person can push even a 36" up by himself without a dolly or any lifting. I've done this two different ways, both times using blankets and cardboard to protect the TV and make it easy to slide up the soft steps.

>>5975263
All good advice, weight distribution and protection are key. Use very dense pillows though, because a lot of regular old sleeping pillows condense down to almost nothing under heavy weight, and make sure the pillows don't affect the evenness of the weight distribution or make things so bouncy that any restraints come loose.

>> No.5975651

>>5975263
>>5975376

Thank you, kind anons. The stairs do actually have runner carpeting. I might be overthinking the whole thing, but I basically just need to be as sure as possible that it's a task that can be completed with zero fuckups, as the consequences of such are not nearly worth having a bitchin' tube in my room.

And yes, unfortunately this house isn't mine and I live in it with other people who don't share my appreciation of vintage display technology so it's not gonna be able to live downstairs. Also, I don't really want to be gaming in a common space anyways because then I'm that weird roommate who's hanging out by himself at 1am in the living room playing playstation/watching shit all the time. My room is big enough to easily accomodate this set without having it dominate the room so it could be a pretty badass thing to have once I get over this hurdle.

Thanks for the tips, really.

Does anyone have any tips for connecting a dreamcast to multiple monitors? Most of the monitors only do 240p/480i but one of them is a pc monitor thatll do 480p. The pc monitor has rgbhv bnc connectors on the back, so I could use that but as far as I know that would limit the monitor to 480i. Is that right or can I output the 31khz signal from the dreamcast av connector in to the monitor with rgbhv and get 480p? What complicates things is that I'd like to go in to different monitors, which I have a crosspoint for. The crosspoint has rgbhv connectors but the monitors will only take rgbs. I see that some people make cables with switches installed to go between 15khz and 31khz signals which I could install in a cable but that wouldn't help me go in to the rgbhv monitor as it won't take the pure sync.
Any tips?

It uses an fpga which isn't exactly cheap, but I mean they obviously leave themselves room for profit considering the time they took to engineer it. You're not upset McDonald's charges you a dollar for a drink when it only cost them a small fraction for the syrup do you?

The digital video stream is encrypted, and the FPGA is there to decrypt it. And I mentioned it before, but a connector like that is extremely expensive to make. The price could probably be cut by $15-20 if they'd gone with a 3D-printed connector instead.

>And then there's the people who actually buy those 8" monitors. I'll never be able to understand that.
Hi.
I need advice. I know this thread is kinda old but hopefully you see this.
I saw this PVM (yes, only 8 inches, roughly 8x8x20, yes, 20 inches deep) for sale. Long story short I can get it for $25. It's listed for much more but the guy just needs it gone and accepted an offer for $25.
He has no way of testing video. I realized I have nothing that uses BNC connectors. What do I do?
Buy and bring a BNC to VGA adapter and try to use it with a PC as a test? Bring BNC to RCA and just hook it up with composite just for test (obviously if I bought it I would not be using composite, but I am an amerimutt and have nothing that outputs native RGB)?
And assuming the video does work and doesn't come out black and white or fucked up somehow, assuming I do buy it, what then?
The only consoles I have that might output RGB (after being modded, which is a whole different ballgame and waste of money/time) are the SNES and N64 which I already have S-Video for, and the Genesis which I already have composite for, which is admittedly garbage, but some games with the dithering look better with composite (see the classic sonic waterfalls / pipes on chemical plant zone examples, earthworm jim loading screens / ground, etc...)

So I'm kind of at an impasse. On the one hand I should buy it just to list it on Ebay for $100 + shipping, but I don't want to do that.
I already have VGA for my dreamcast. My Gamecube can use the N64 S-Video but I just use a modded Wii with component. What is the point of BNC connectors / RGB for me?
Can't get it from a NES.
I don't mean to sound like a negative jerk but I really don't know if I see the point. S-Video was already a huge jump in sharpness and color bleed for the N64 and only cost me about $3.50 - I'm not sure I want to take on the modding project for what seems to be a very small gain, especially on an 8 inch PVM.

I guess the real issue is that one monitor needs rgbhv while rest don't. So even if I use one of these boxes I've seen, im not sure it helps combine the sync to the monitors that don't need the h and v separately.

I've spraypainted a couple keyboards, they didn't hold up as well because of my palms constantly resting on them. If I'd used automotive paint or something, part of me thinks it'd have fared better. It initially gave very nice results, though.
The top half of my snes is yellowing, but nowhere near as bad as the launch unit I picked up a while back. The case still isn't too brittle.
I have a U.S. launch revision playstation with a case so brittle that all the screw posts cracked and it's held together entirely with hot glue and prayers. It's my only launch revision unit, though, and it's one of the ones that used VRAM instead of the SGRAM later ones used and it has a vastly different GPU. Some games perform very differently (can be better and/or worse) on early units. Since I try to program for the PSX, it feels like it's important for me to have both kinds.
>Moto X4
Not too bad.
There's a chance it will support manual exposure settings with OpenCamera. Give it a go. Set it to 1/60 of a second (or 1/30 maybe) and 200-400 ISO. Set the color temperature to either "manual" and ~6500°K or to "daylight". Usually those work best for me, although I am using a different camera sensor obviously.

I also use a DSLR sometimes (Nikon D40), but of course that's pretty old and my only lenses aren't good for close-ups.

I wrote this up once before, but my browser crashed. Forgot to mention that if you were to make this externally, you'd need to carry +5V through the cable to buffer the sync signal, quite probably introducing noise into the audio.
Just solves a lot of problems doing it this way.

Oh, and the other thing:
Removing the RF modulator PCB also reduces noise, and it could make the system run a little bit cooler (though I cannot really verify this, since I don't know how much current it'd draw compared to the 74LS08 I added).

Seems harsh. It's my kids room, with a sorta jungle theme. I like the walls, but to each their own I guess.
>-10 for tacky lamps
My wife made that for my kid. The other is hers from her childhood.
>-10 for shitty SNES paint job
Fair, but it looks better than the cracked yellow imo.
>-10 for Fisher Price VHS
yah, but it matches the TV. plus when you press play it shows a little animation of a rabbit on a skateboard.
>-10 for aftermarket youtuber display case for game
Fair enough, but it came with the game for pretty much no cost.
>-10 for bargain bin Walmart CRT
Also fair. It was pretty much the cheapest one.
The setup is ostensibly for my kid, but she's shy in age of being able to use it just yet. So I use it to play mostly Yoshi's island atm.

Any suggestions for good VHS tapes for kids? We have the original star wars trilogy and Indiana Jones trilogy atm.

>what capture card
Any of them.
Most will interlace though, so if you want to get 60fps/240p out of them you have to do a little shuffling. ffmpeg can make pretty much any capture card's output into 240p.
Since my card captures at 720x480i, this on the ffmpeg command line gets me progressive 60fps video. If yours captures 640x480i, you should use "setdar=4/3" instead.
-vf "setfield=tff,separatefields,scale=720x480:flags=neighbor,setdar=3/2"
My full command line (I run linux, windows users will need to use directshow instead of v4l2; see https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/DirectShow.. Also https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Capture/Webcam for more info on why I did what I did):
fmpeg -y -thread_queue_size 1024 -f v4l2 -i "$VIDEODEVICE" -thread_queue_size 1024 -f alsa -i "$AUDIODEVICE" -vf "setfield=tff,separatefields,scale=720x480:flags=neighbor,setdar=3/2" -vcodec libx264 -crf 19 -acodec libfdk_aac -ab 128k "$OUTFILE"
In my case, the devices are:
VIDEODEVICE=/dev/video0
AUDIODEVICE=hw:2,0 (if you use pulseaudio you will need to use the pulse input instead of alsa)
My card is an old Roxio "Easy VHS to DVD," which uses the same chipset as the Ezcap DC60+ – the Empia EM2861. Under windows, I have used it in WinXP through Windows 8, and it might have drivers for 10. There are linux drivers built into the kernel, so no installation needed there. Mac OS is out of luck. Dual boot linux or run it in a VM.
>>5983582
Yes. Don't listen to other anon, video inputs are usually 1 volt at low current. First just try other cables if yours isn't fixed in place.
Else, try another system's VGA output before trying to replace the old cable.
If you have to you can replace the cable even if it is fixed without hurting yourself, if you only mess w/ the cable.

A resistor would be nice, if you have a really high wattage one just sitting around.
Personally I have done it without a resistor. For the anode at least.

For capacitors you may also be able to get away with a screwdriver, especially if you don't necessarily need to use it as a screwdriver when you're done (it might be weakened, by being repeatedly arc welded to capacitor leads. Or it may be fine, IDK). I'd still recommend a bleeder resistor but it may not be necessary if you're sure it's well insulated.

a bleeder resistor is just a normal resistor, being used as a load so that all the power in a capacitor doesn't get discharged instantly.

They're usually rather large normal resistors, so they can hold up to a lot of heat.
