I really loved the first one. Maybe it's just nostalgia talking as I only ever really played the first one growing up, but I have beaten all 3 gba ports at the very least and I have played a lot of 2 on the snes. And I can say 1 is still the best. 2 tried to have too many boring and frusterating gimmick levels where the 1st's was perfect. I can't comment on 3 because it's been so long and I only ever beat the GBA version. I know it had an extra level called pacifica or something but that's all I remember.

It's not worth playing after experiencing the first two in my opinion. Playing the the first two in order gives you a proper leap forward in quality and presentation from game-to-game, but going from DKC2 to 3 is a step backwards. I'd say going from DKC to DKC3 is a step backwards too.

As far as completion goes, its the one the shines the most. Good game and good DKC game, with the few hiccups standing out more because DKC2 had no hiccups vs the original. Hiccups I remember were uglier enemy designs, kiddy being the least fun character of the 4, reliance on traditional 2D effects at times like the octopus' water spout, and a world map that felt like you were controlling the character from outer space. Also too many collectibles. It's the proto DKC64.
Levels and gameplay were still on par with the originals, making it a good DKC game.

I think the aesthetic is weaker than the prior two games but the gameplay is definitely superior to DKC1. As this thread points out, most people hate it entirely for Kiddy Kong and not a rational reason. Not having DK there again is weird, after going through all the trouble to save him, and makes it feel even more like a side story. Introducing a fourth Kong was a mistake, they should have had DK/Diddy/Dixie.
Other than that, I don't see why anyone would rate 3 poorly in terms of its gameplay. It built on the previous game just like 2 did, and constantly introduced new things throughout. Accordingly, in some places the difficulty is higher. It has more levels, more secrets. The bears and banana bird stuff is more extensive than anything in 2. And you get a hovercraft.

They have the rights to use them as much as they do for Diddy, Cranky, Funky, and Dixie, not to mention games like King of Swing and Barrel Blast showing that they can have Kremlings in any DK game without the involvement of Rare nor Microsoft.
Unless the lack of them (and in turn how they started to use the DK cast less and less as time went on until nowadays) is mainly because of some unknown hatered Nintendo has over Rare.

I guess maybe not everybody knows this, but the Gameboy Advance port of Donkey Kong Country 3 contained a completely different soundtrack than the original. The lack of a backlight on the OG GBA models forced them to brighten up the colors of the first two games to compensate and it totally ruined the ambiance, especially for the second one. Yeah, there aren't any new archetypes in the new world which means it suffers difficulty establishing itself as a unique area, but there are a couple unused elements from the original. It's been a while but I remember feeling underwhelmed when I finally played through it, kinda remember the level design being rote.

I like a lot of the new music (but absolutely not the cheesy new sound effects), it's obviously butchered on the GBA soundchip but if you listen to remixes they're solid. Here's three tracks composer David Wise upgraded for the E3 trailer, while we're on the subject:

What's the best area in the game?
Also is Lemguin Lunge the worst level?

>Is this a bad game
>or just a bad "donkey kong country" game
neither, I played through all 3 again recently and enjoyed 3 the most, I don't get the hype behind 2 I played it then and I played it now and I found it to just be frustrating instead of fun

I just finished a 103% replay of this earlier tonight, after having not played it all the way through in many years.

It's a lot of fun. I like how most of the DK Coins and Bonus Barrels are logically hidden. There were a few that gave me a bit of trouble and required some dedicated hunting, but at least they didn't do too much obtuse shit like having to walk through collision-free walls and whatnot. The bosses weren't too bad in terms of design and combat, but the boss of Cotton-Top Cove, the sea creature that spits at you, was pretty stupid. That being said, the bosses were overall underwhelming in terms of difficulty when compared to some of the levels, with a couple of the Lost World levels bordering on frustrating. The final Banana Bird memory game was probably the most frustrating since I suck at those.

I think they went too cartoony with some of the enemies, and I miss the large palette-swap variety from the first game.

Really don't know why anybody would consider this to be a bad game. It is a lot of fun, and the difficulty is just enough to keep things interesting but not enough to really leave you stuck for an extended period of time.

GBA music is a mixed bag but it doesn't have a real final boss theme so fuck it.

Rare's contract with Microsoft didn't extend to handhelds, so they were allowed to keep making GBA and DS games.

For a while afterwards, though, M$ got so stingy with their ownership of Rare that they wouldn't even let the DKC games be sold on the Wii's Virtual Console and so they got delisted. It wasn't until the WiiU that they let them be sold again.

Is that indeed why DKC got delisted? I remember the spurious rumor at the time was the music homages/theft but we all knew that probably wasn't it. I do remember Nintendo giving MS problems over Goldeneye, maybe a reboot?

I think they were allowed to finish the GBA games already in development and then, because of that opening, they signed a new one for the DS stuff.

it's pretty good. it's main fault is that kiddy kong is a bad character.
