What are good shmups for a noob to start out with that aren’t punishingly hard.

Forgot to say that Einhander JP has some menus stylistically in english and features a 'free' difficulty where you have infinite tries.

All of these games are fairly easy, very enjoyable and just flat out fun. Viewpoint is the hardest of the bunch but is a really one of a kind game.

Google "Japanese shmup difficulty list."
Pick something under 13 rated. The higher the number the harder.

>mfw usually dont get further than first level while I have no problem with other shmups

>> No.5953756

>>5953742
Who says this? R-Type isn't very beginner friendly, it has brutal checkpoint recovery and very strict memorization based gameplay, particularly in the latter half. You really can't die from the 4th stage onwards, the last 3 checkpoints of the game are practically unrecoverable. It's not that hard overall, but it's a rough starting point for sure. Gradius Gaiden is a much better pick

I fucking hate it when shmups pull that bullshit. Another one that takes this to the extreme is Hellfire on Genesis. You lose all your weapon and speed upgrades when you die, and it uses a checkpoint system. So if you die you start off weak and slow as shit at a checkpoint right before a difficult situation/boss and you just end up dying over and over until you run out of lives because you can never ever recover back to decent speed/power.

>> No.5954446

>>5954161
It can be an annoyance and is fairly common in older shmups, though as long as the checkpoints are balanced and not insane like late checkpoints in R-Type recoveries can be really exciting. But yes half the time you're better off just restarting the game and going for a no death run than bashing your head trying to recover in some brutal spots

>> No.5954851

>>5952958
Define "punishingly hard". If you feel you should be entitled to beating a game after x amount of tries then every shmup worth playing would be punishingly hard.

I've 1CC'd a fair number of shmups in my days, R-Type included, and all my faves are games I've never beaten.

>> No.5954890

>>5953448
Mars Matrix is probably NOT a game to recommend to somebody fresh into shmups as a whole. It's a good pick for someone generally but not intensively versed in the genre, though, for adapting to thread-the-needle style gameplay.

Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth for the N64

Very easy going vertical shooter, I remember having a fairly good time as an 11 year old. Enemies take a while to take down because of the game's slow scaling powerups, but their patterns are extremely lenient.

stick to console shooters

lot of pc engine shooters are on the easy side, especially for a 1cc

some ports on pce are a lot easier too, such as Galaga 88 and Atomic Robo Kid

The campaign mode is amazing. All the secret stuff you can find (including secret levels), the incredible ship/weapon customization, the special weapons, the moves you can do with a ship to activate some special ability, the hidden bits of humor scattered throughout the datacubes etc. It's impressively meaty.
Tyrian is probably the only shmup I've ever played that feels like it was made from the ground up to meet the average expectations of PC player audiences, rather than a port for a coin-op timewaster.

I think a game that's punishingly hard would be something like Gradius, where one stray bullet can completely fuck your entire run if it hits you after a bad checkpoint.

Figured this would be the best thread to ask. Why have Trouble Shooter for Sega Genesis skyrocketed in value? I picked it up for 10 - 15 dollars about 7 years ago, now it's like 60 - 80 dollars depending on condition. Why?

Look, no one would seriously claim a memorizer is beginner friendly, especially not one that relies on a gimmick such as the detachable force pod.

Try some of the really early shmups. Around the mid 1980s they started designing games to stump the hardcore jap masters of previous shmups, then later games had to be harder than that, and so on.

Don't play touhou unless you like wasting your time getting good at amateur-made jankware.
