I played through Quake's singleplayer for the first time. It was about what I was told to expect (competently made but not super interesting from a gameplay perspective, good but not groundbreaking besides the engine and more advanced physics). I'm a bit confused about the shotgun/nailgun and their upgrades, though. Is there any reason to use the normal shotgun or nailgun when you have their upgraded counterparts? Unlike DOOM's shotgun which is mostly outclassed by the SSG but still has some pretty significant advantages in niche scenarios, like being better at stunlocking enemies if you don't have a high-fire-rate weapon and the fire rate in general being useful if enemies are quickly being funneled around a corner and you can only hit them one at a time, the shotgun in Quake feels 100% outclassed by the double barrel. I know the shotgun in that game is basically its pistol, but it just seems weird to me that you can even select it instead of the double just replacing it. It feels like not even ammo conservation matters considering how plentiful shells are on every map.

Just finished the second game, loved the emphasis on platforming with ledge grabbing/pole jumping/etc, but it felt like ass to control. Don't you dare press back while running, or else Corvus gonna do that fucking long backflip.

I've recently played Duke 3D after Blood.
I considered the latter superior but now,I don't really know. They're both awesome.
Duke 3D did so many things better than Blood but still feel equal in terms of quality.

Going on this last thread's topic: I don't mind how the DH looks even if he could have been handled better but D64 chainsaw aside, he theoretically "fits" Doom, which is a problem for the Marauder
He looks out of place because he's related to new lore/direction that the devs expect you to get used to before the game is out
You get the impression that he could be Doomguy's own Wario/Vergil/Shadow but he barely resembles him besides the green armor with a red dot
Maybe giving him a similar helmet could make him feel like he's part of Doom, along with an emphasis on the SSG

If there is one thing I could do for HL is to completely rework the game to instead of being a linear shitfest be more like Duke, Thief, Deus Ex contained semi sandbox levels were yo can just fuck around.

There was also a odd issue I ran into when attempting to make decals. In the pic related I made a thin block and then put an GOD BLESSED AND BEAUTIFUL AMERICAN FLAG on the face of the block.

Previously I just used the Decal Tool and put the flag on the wall. When I tested the map and went to the office room the flag decal was not there.

I couldn't figure out why the decal was not showing up on the wall so I just ended up making a block and then putting the flag on the block.

You have some pretty wild misconceptions about GPL software.

It's great for whittling away at just anything at range, if you're safe up on a ledge, and can easily cover from potential shots, the high speed and tight spread, along with common ammo, really can let you 'shoot fish in a barrel' with ease. I've done in a Shambler or two this way just because, and it doesn't actually take a lot of time.

Rather extremely if you use GZDoom as your port.

Some of the few limitations are: Very complex terrain and extremely large open spaces don't work well, there's no support for skeletal animation, there's no way to bake shadowmaps, and collision between objects is simplistic (hitboxes are all AABB's; equal-sided non-rotating boxes).

HL1 is one of THE most overrated games ever. It's only beloved because it told a story (when most FPS were nearly devoid of plot) and did so in a seamless fashion. But the actual gameplay is complete ass compared to the other great FPS of the time. And even though there aren't cutscenes, you frequently are forced to wait and watch scripted events to progress. Pretty good map overall. Nice detail everywhere and nothing stood or looked too bland. I have a few issues:
>1. Red key trigger was too easy to avoid. I picked it up the first time without passing the linedef.
>2. Outdoors secret didn't trigger when I walked outside. It worked whenever I walked back into the base.
>3. Needs a bit more shotgun ammo in the beginning and more chaingun ammo later on. Add maybe one or two shotgun boxes early on and two boxes of chaingun ammo before the big caco fight.

Half-Life's level design was a downgrade from other FPS. It takes place in Black Mesa, this massive facility, but since it's completely linear, it doesn't take any advantage of that like Hexen, Strife and System Shock did with their non-linear hub worlds. At the same time, Half-Life also lacks the variety other FPS like Duke Nukem 3D and Blood had with their unique self-contained levels, nor does it have something like Unreal's epic journey across an alien planet. It's the worst of both worlds.

The whole game feels like "piecemeal situations: the game". The monsters don't compliment each other, so you end up with 'the marine part' 'the female assassin part' 'the alien grunt part' instead of situations where you fight mixed groups of enemies that support each other.

Half-Life gets way too much credit for doing shit that was commonplace in other games. The whole 'immersive storytelling' thing was already done by shooters that came out before Half-Life, such as Unreal and System Shock. And those games did it way better. For example, Unreal handles storytelling much better than Half-Life since you're on alien planet and don't speak the language of the inhabitants, this justifies the silent protagonist conceit. Half-Life has no such excuse, and any time NPCs talk to you completely breaks any immersion.

Besides, not only is Half-Life's story very generic, but it also has a lot of immersion-breaking moments. For example, there is one point in the game where you head into a darkened area and you get ambushed and your weapons taken away. The thing is, you have a flashlight, so what happens if you use it in that darkened area? Nothing. The game arbitrarily makes it not work in that area because they were too lazy to think of an organic way to script that setpiece.
There are also parts where you get a game over if an NPC dies, because they are needed to flip a switch to progress. Again, immersion-breaking.

It's not as fast and easy to learn as Doom mapping.
You can do a shitload of different things with the engine, things Vanilla Doom couldn't ever do, but it takes some time to figure out and to put into practice. It doesn't get easier with sourceports, as opposed with Doom where some sourceports will just allow you to do things which Vanilla Doom would throw a shitfit over.

Mapster 32 also hasn't become much more user friendly, while Doombuilder was a massive step up from every map making software in the 90s, and has improved ever since it came out.
It's mostly just easier to get started making a map for Doom, even if the theory of level design (flow, encounter design, layout, progression, navigation, aesthetics, etc) don't really differ dramatically from how you would apply it to Duke Nukem 3D

You can use decals, but you have to manually define them before you can place them in the editor. And there's no visual preview. And you can't stretch or colorize them (without defining a new variant). And they don't play nice with 3D floor constructions. Like I said, a ton of hassle.

Really? Because I worked on a map recently in UDMF format and almost all of this was available by default. The only things you listed that it couldn't do were colorize textures or 3D floor stuff. The rest was available all from the start with no extra setup. Just start a new map in GZDoombuilder in UDMF format and you can use any texture on any floor from the start, no manual definition required. I'm sure Build does a lot more than Doom no doubt about that, but a lot of these features are easily accessible with GZDoombuilder and UDMF.

Honestly, you should just play some good wads to get a better feeling of the game. Personal recommendation is Memento Mori 1 and 2 (they're technically made for co-op but speaking as someone who played it in single player there are only two levels that negatively affected my experience with co-op only shit, MAP04 and MAP31 from the first wad, the former just because the SSG is locked behind a co-op puzzle and you NEED it if you don't want the level to be a frustrating chore). You should from this point on, if you want to properly appreciate level design, play via pistol start because 99% of levels are balanced around that and so should your levels.

They're pretty inherently different by virtue of Quake being full 3D. Of course there's going to be more depth to combat when you have two axis of movement and aiming.

Shooters made TODAY still have quake code somewhere deep in there. You can play titanfall 2 or team fortress 2 and develop movement skills in those that are directly transferable to quake.

Quake's more about execution and Doom's more about the dungeon crawling and exploration I think is reasonably fair to say. There's nothing like a spawn in doom.

I really recommend this Duke map, Poison Heart.

It's fucking huge. Insane amounts of detail crammed into every room. Reminds me of Ion Fury style. Has a crazy amount of interactivity with the environment and really really smart set pieces. Lots of blowing shit up and changing paths. Clever platforming, large battles. It's got it all. It's about 40-60 minutes long. It's good shit.

He had several twists and turns in his style. His earliest maps are purely combat-oriented, more often than not - in IRL locations.
Then around 2004 he started introducing HeXen-esque "find the switch" mindfuckery. Three "Anarchy City" maps first and foremost. This persisted for like 5 years culminating with Anorak City.
Then he shifted again, there was this concept map of his, I think it was "Anarchy City X", you were supposed to be running all over town with very limited healing item reserve, battlelords all over, alien protector drones on your tail, NO WEAPONS WHATSOEVER FOR ALMOST THE ENTIRETY OF THE MAP - looking for goddamn HIDDEN switches and passages, while playing effectively Nightmare Doom. Anyway, from that point onward, as I've said, his style shifted again. He stopped trying to catch player offguard by hiding switches in seriously inventive places, started to sort of try to bruteforce, overwhelm the player, while more or less regurgitating tropes from his earlier maps. I am personally frankly not a fan of that development, Poison Heart included.

Anyway, if you intend to do some digging, I personally advise you to start from like his 2004 maps (pretty much from original Anarchy City and Rural Nightmare onward) then play every map chronologically until Anorak City, then decide for yourself.

As for his new style, I think I liked his Siebenpolis the best, although it is HEAVILY rooted in his 2004-2009 tropes, without really adding much to them other than the overall vicious nihilistic attitude, that is.

As someone who is a big fan of Quake, I feel like the big reason Quake is faster than Doom is due to the streamlined nature of the former. Doom is a game made of relatively large maps, while Quake tends to rely upon smaller design. This ends up resulting in Doom levels where you wander down corridors hitting a single Zombieman, as opposed to Quake where each room is more likely to count and be filled with ambushes.

This design, combined with the lack of an automap, means that you don't really spend time spamming every wall like you do in Doom. Maybe it is just my method of playing, but I find I spend more time trying to get to secrets and gather all the health/armor bonuses in Doom. Quake, you got some secrets, but never do I feel like I am getting away from the action for too long.

The biggest reason however has to be the difference in the use key. Everything you touch requires one less key; this also means puzzles cannot be as complex as the ones in Doom. Oh, you have the bosses being puzzles in Quake, but the average level is a run-and-gun style with the hardest challenge being "hit the button". Doom meanwhile has stuff like E3M5, which means teleporter mazes. It has stuff like Barrels o' Fun, which means barrel puzzles. It often has linedefs affecting other things in maps; I can't count the number of PWADs where a level exit would be sealed because you walked into the wrong corner.

The main reason I prefer Quake over Doom is because the former feels like people learned from the latter. It had less parts that dragged endlessly, giving a sort of "oh god when will this level end" feeling. Where many seem to enjoy Doom more for being able to kill a large number of hoards, I prefer Quake since each battle feels more eventful. As much as people gripe about a few shots to kill an Ogre, it is far more dangerous and better than fighting the Cacodemon, which feels like an overused bullet sponge. I can't think of moments in Quake that drag like Doom's E3M1.

the berserk is actually the third and last secret, the first is a misaligned texture in the left hallway going from the starting room, theres a switch that opens up to the outdoors area with the blue armor. The second secret is right to the left of the switch, its a different texture and theres a partial invisibility behind it, figured id hide something that makes the level real easy for the treasure hunters.

I actually think arenas are fine for what doom 2016 is trying to do, emphasize the combat.

I love quake and doom but a lot of the time it's smarter to just play encounters from the door of the room rather than actually entering it, risking having to dodge and fight in unfamiliar terrain. I've been using Quakespasm Spiked as it's just QS but with more neat features, and I don't think switching to Vulkan rendering will do me any big favors, but if it does for you, go ahead.
The github page says that it supports software-accurate underwater effects which is something I yearn for, since FitzMkV has that feature yet fucks up the sound on my PC, along with a few other things.

I am actually trying to work on a mod like this, see you in half a decade or so when I actually have anything presentable apart from empty dreams and a word document.
The engine is extremely limited, Matt is lucky to have a fully-realized modern engine with scripting capabilities (GZDoom), all the fun stuff is going to need harsh workarounds and concessions since the engine itself is purpose-built and not general-purpose.

The Doom 2 SSG looks realistic as far as I can tell, a hammerless side by side shotgun with the barrels cut down in front of the handguards.

Could be any old Stoeger, Ithaca, Stevens, Rossi, Colt, or Savage, to just name a few brands.
It may not be intended to appear like any one shotgun, but from what we can tell ny looking at it, it looks fully plausible as a gun of its type, I can't think of anything that's just really wrong about it.

How do you figure? The barrels don't look bigger and ammunition is just described as generic shells.
For what it matters it could be just a longer shell with more shot in it, or the same size shell with smaller shot.

The Q2 SSG is based visually on the Neostead, but works completely differently, the two tubes on top are the magazines, and you cycle the gun by sliding the fore-end (which attaches to the barrel) forward and back.

For firing two shotgun shells at once, some sporting shotguns will wear a lot from that, not being designed for it, but the barrels will be fine, and recoil, even with slugs, shouldn't harm you unless you're maybe holding the stock away from your shoulder like a total noob.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and suggest that Adrian Carmack probably wasn't aiming for any one brand or model, just what would look convincing.

Full 3D would turn it into a quasi-milsim, but that also means more work since all the abstracted things in Doom need to be made visible.
Source would solve a lot of my problems but HL isn't source, and Xash feels like cheating, I also have no idea about engine development at all so it's not like I can make big changes to it, at least not yet.
Destructible doors can be done in goldsrc, OpFor ropes could be ladders (OpFor never had an SDK so I need to check the decompile on github).
Most of my problems lie in shit like limited tracing (making bullets difficult), translation of viewmodel movement into shot direction (HL has neither proper vmodel movement nor a way to read the position of a model bone in 3d space) and client/server BS and prediction (literal aneurysm).

GE had actually already designed a minigun in 5.56 in the 60s, almost literally just a scaled down M134. It was still meant to be used as a mounted weapon and still required an external power source, and no one was interested in it so it fizzled out. Quake Champions is the biggest "big" AFPS around right now in terms of players, but it's marred by numerous dumb decisions and wonky netcode, and the whole "hero" thing might not appeal to you.
UT4 is UT2K4 but with better graphics here and there. The game is grossly unfinished, and thanks to a certain battle royale, has absolutely stopped development and may never be completed.
As for the smaller titles, you've got games like Toxikk, Reflex, Warsow, and Warfork. I don't know how populated any of them are, but I doubt you could just jump into matchmaking and find a game under a minute.
Same probably goes for the AFPS that were big in their day, like Q2, VQ3, CPMA, Q3TA, Unreal, UT99, and UT2K4. Probably a very small and very dedicated playerbase that has Steam groups or something where they organize matches on certain dates.

Had a lot of help from members spreading the word. Probably helped that it was mostly vanilla with all gametypes enabled rather than dedicated to one game style.

Arena based FPSs usually lack any sort of exploration, interesting encounters or unique enemies. When you're done running in a circle, all you have to look forward to is a hallway leading to the next arena, except this one may have a slightly larger, spongier enemy show up.

Quake Live has stayed pretty populated in north america. Just remember to hide empty servers in the server browser and you'll usually find matches under 100 ping.

If you're playing on a server with more than 70 ping, type " cl_timeNudge -20 " into the console. That will help compensate for the lag in a noticeable way. Have fun, and remember that we all sucked at first. Fix your config using the menus, and remember to practice aim before trying to practice your playstyle. Playing against people better than you is the only way to get better, and there is no shortage of people better than you at Quake.

I've seen people refer to entire levels of stock doom as "arenas."
Imagine this: You start off in a level, see a squad of enemies you don't have ammo for, and decide to straferun down a hall into another area. There are enemies there too, so you decide to keep running. You see a shotgunner, kill him, take his gun, and start gunning down some nearby imps. You run out of ammo, so you take your dinky pistol and start traversing the map for firepower, opening doors, entering sectors, and advertently waking up nearby demons. Soon enough, the whole map is alive, and you start to kill everything.

Nudoom doesn't have this. The level design is mostly just enter empty room->enter nest room-> kill everything -> repeat. I could probably count the number of times there were non-zombie enemies met outside of a gore nest room.

That's really not true, arenas do take up most of the combat, but there are some really interesting sections of the levels that have non-zombie enemies. I just wish they didn't have to use arenas so goddamn much, but I guess there was no other way to get the speed they wanted.

I have over 1000 hours in Quake Live and it has never made me annoyed that few people are playing. Just because the playerbase is small does not mean that it isn't active. We're still playing at nearly all times of the day for gods sake.

IRL a Chaingun would a single barreled 25mm autocannon with a motorized action, which would be cool as balls to use in an FPS.

Yeah, the XM214 Microgun. They wanted to offer it to the airforce, but it was quickly realized that 5.56mm NATO isn't really that good for air to air combat, and not that much better for air to ground, existing 7.62mm NATO machineguns (including the M134 Minigun) already had stellar performance for air to ground, and the 20mm M61 Vulcan was what they wanted for air to air.

One of the other ideas with the Microgun was that it would be an easily portable package for static emplacements by infantry, as the gun was smaller, but battery technology just wasn't that good back then, so the battery was big, bulky, and didn't power for that long, among with all the other bulk and bother.
