Age is the thing here.
When I was in elementary school, N64 was all the rage. Every birthday party was 4p multiplayer games like Mario Party, Smash Bros, wrestling games, etc. PS1 kids were around but they were a minority.
Meanwhile, my older brother and his friends were all about PS1. They still liked to play Goldeneye though

>Every birthday party was 4p multiplayer games like Mario Party, Smash Bros, wrestling games

I legitimately wonder if 4 player multiplayer actually hurt Nintendo's console sales. Think about it; you're going to someone's house to play Goldeneye with three other people. Do you really need to buy an N64 at all? By contrast, the PS1 has a lot of single player games, going to a friend's house to experience MGS or FF would make you more likely to buy a PS1.

>> No.5938963

>>5938961
Feel like multiplayer would be more of a draw for the parents actually buying the console.

>> No.5938970

>>5938963
A draw for the parents, but a short term one. Most of the N64's most iconic games are multiplayer, and the game have little substance so they translate perfectly to multiplayer, why buy an N64 for Smash when you can go to someone's house and play largely the same game for free? Meanwhile the PS1's most iconic games are single player, getting a sample of the game would probably make you buy a PS1 and the game you want. This is probably why Sony had such a huge lead on Nintendo, and how Sony's "single player" model was expanded upon in modern games. Few games have local multiplayer but they have online multiplayer, thus one game and one console per player.

More like Pokémon required (and still does) one game and one console per person to be played. By contrast, Pokémon Stadium could have two players play on the same console and the same game, albeit with rental Pokémon. But if the people needed to use their own Pokémon, I believe you need two copies of the game boy Pokémon games, two transfer paks, one n64, and one pokestad. But yeah, Pokémon is a great way to showcase what I mean, N64 games rarely had robust single player experiences, multiplayer games made up the bulk of the library, and the full game can be played in its entirety in multiplayer.

I would have to pay $0 for that, everything covered from my insurance. So let's assume the "worst" scenario - your tax rate is 18, mine in total 21.75%. For this deal to be better for you than it's for me, that $3.5k would have to be equal to 3.75% of the income. So you would have to earn slightly above $93k a year for this to turn profit and actually saving you money.

>So let's assume the "worst" scenario - your tax rate is 18, mine in total 21.75%
But my tax rate ISN'T 18%, it's actually much lower. Let me break down for you the federal income tax I pay each year.

I make $53k per year, I contribute approximately $18k each year to various tax-sheltered accounts and pre-tax benefits (401k, IRA, HSA, health insurance premiums), which brings my taxable income down to $35k. We then deduct the "standard deduction" of $12k and my final taxable income is $23,000.

The first $9,700 is taxed at 10% = $970 in taxes
The remaining $13,300 is taxed at 12% = $1,596 in taxes
Add those together and we have a total of $2,566 in federal income tax owed, which is about 4.8% of my total gross income of $53,000.

My state's income tax is about 5% of that $23,000 taxable income = $1,150 which is 2% of my gross income.

So that means each year I pay 6.8% of my income to state and federal income taxes, while you're paying 21.75%, which is THREE TIMES THE RATE I PAY.

You're also not accounting for the fact that I can save away my maximum out of pocket each year that I'm not sick and then use it later when I do get sick. Again, I find this preferable to paying THREE TIMES THE INCOME TAX EVERY SINGLE YEAR. If I had your tax rates, I would have to stop saving for retirement if I wanted to pay all my bills, and I'd much rather save away my own money and retire when I'm ready than have the government dictate every stage of my life. It's all about whether you want to control your own money and savings or if you just want to give all your money to the government to do everything for you, and I would MUCH prefer the former.

No, I was breaking down the percentages for you because the percentages in your example were absolutely outlandish. I figured you understood how tax brackets worked and the difference between marginal and effective tax rates. I thought you were saying that 21.75% is your EFFECTIVE tax rate and were claiming that most Americans pay 18% as an EFFECTIVE tax rate. In response, I showed you that my effective tax rate is actually about a third of what you were claiming. But if you were talking about marginal tax rates the whole time then obviously we're just talking past each other, talking about marginal tax rates in this kind of discussion is pointless anyway.

You're referring to a rapidly shrinking minority. Even the sticky itself betrays your rigid definitions:
>With the release of the 8th generation of consoles, the Sega Dreamcast will now be considered "retro"
This wording implies that the definition of "retro" is subject to change as new consoles are released, because that's exactly what happened with Dreamcast. The problem is that at some point we got turbo-autist mods who changed the process and now refuse to adjust the rules even though they have been adjusted in the past.

The logic of average 6th gen poster. I get it, you are too young to know and care games that are within the range of /vr/. Happens and is absolutely normal.
But demanding from the board to accomodate to your will while there are already two other boards for what you need and want is just fucking disgusting. This is the reason why the "current generation" is called entitled. You want to get something that you already have, for the sake of it and your own personal amusement, while screwing over everyone else, because who cares, right?

>> No.5953913

>>5953902
I'm 30 years old and post about retro games here all the time. I just also recognize how stagnant the board is and realize that time moves forward and how there are people who want to discuss GBA, GCN, and PS2 games who gradually have nowhere to discuss these things because they're becoming too old for the literal zoomers of /v/ to care about but /vr/ still refuses to change. Even though once upon a time people actually did reevaluate what should be considered retro with each new generation of consoles, like how the Dreamcast got added with the introduction of 8th gen. As we move into 9th gen it starts to make sense to reevaluate things again, but the autists on this board just won't have it.

>> No.5953925

>>5953902
>>5953913
You also have to be fucking blind to not see that discussion is skewing later and later on the board, slowly but surely. First and second gens are almost never discussed here any more, aside from the occasional thread or two every couple months, and usually it gets relegated to someone creating a general thread because there are so few people here to talk about those gens. Third gen threads are slowly becoming more sparse as well, and the predominant conversation revolves around fourth and fifth gens now. Like it or not, demographics shift and eventually this board is going to be fucking dead if we don't allow some new blood in by reevaluating what's allowed here. New consoles being allowed means new discussion, and I don't buy the idea that allowing 6th gen would completely push out all discussion of previous gens, either, that's just people being irrationally afraid of any change.
