I get that but why does he just go along with it and call himself Eggman? It's like if your name was John Smith but everyone calls you Scumass, and eventually you decide to adopt Scumass as your official name.

SA1 had the best compromise where he called himself Robotnik, and Sanic called him Eggman. They should've kept that up in future games, but alas they didn't.

SA1's translation was good, even if it deviated a bit by adding an explanation for Eggman (not a bad idea but making it an insult didn't stick) and changing a few lines between character stories (though so it's not as repetitive and you can imagine each character having their own spin on it). SA2, on the other hand, had a poor translation.

As far as I'm aware, they haven't called him "Bowser Koopa" in Japan (or at least, I've never heard any stories of his full name used there), but they occasionally use the name "Bowser" (the Flame Runner in MKW is called the "Super Bowser", Sunshine didn't have a Japanese dub, etc).

Can't seem to find the notes at the moment but there are a lot of parts of the dialog that is off. Things that come to mind are that Tails calls ARK the first "Bernoulli" spherical space colony in the English version (as opposed to "Bernal" in Japanese, which makes more sense), Knuckles makes a different claim in front of the pyramid (I believe he didn't actually see Rouge, which is why he asks Amy if she's sure she saw her), and they somehow got Shadow's "Is that what Chaos Control is!?" from "Chaos...Control...?" (as in, he's shocked that the prototype used Chaos Control, not that he never saw Chaos Control before, which is a nonsensical statement since he should already be fully aware of it). I believe the reason SA2 suffered is because they rushed the translation in order to make it to Sonic's 10th anniversary in time; you've even got voice actors saying that the SA1 voice work was more natural because they were forced to fit the lip flaps in SA2. That's why several lines overlap in the English version, like Sonic and Shadow's pre-1st fight banter, and Eggman expressing surprise at the newslady reporting on a Chaos Emerald before she actually mentions it.
