This is unironically superior compared to the first game.

ironically

That's what sequels are supposed to be, yes.

It really is. The best game in the series after Ocarina’s Master Quest.

Original is really boring and it's basically modern day open world meme 2.0. It's so fucking boring.

Zelda 2 is intense and I love it. It's kinda dumb that upgrading attack power doesn't really matter for the final boss but at the same time I kinda like that idea as you can't just grind attack power to kill the final boss. The final boss is a lot more fun/challenging to fight as well. Only thing they really could have eased on was having to go back all the way to the start of the game if you died. I don't even think Zelda 1 was that harsh when it came to dying.

>sloppy difficulty curve
>all items are one-use keys in disguise
>vague as shit progression, much moreso than zelda 1
>random battles in a zelda game
it's a good game but a far cry from zelda 1. i hardly even consider it a zelda game. it moreso feels like an experimental, more rpg-y spin-off

It’s not superior but it’s got its own merits imo. Zelda 2 got judged too hard and I was one of them because as a kid I simply hated it wasn’t top down view. But as an adult I revisited the game a few times, beating it each time, and I got to say it holds up pretty well with today’s gameplay expectations

Outside of the top down perspective what are some things about it now you don't like as an adult?

Small quality of life stuff like The fact exp drops to 0 in a few situations like game overs or if you’re out of time and have to save and quit is very aggravating. I think the lives system feels wonky too. A lack of inventory namely for magic and health potions. Overall I think the game design makes a good case for lives and inventory, but I find those things Annoying.

Zelda 1 does absolutely nothing well. It’s revered by gamer gurrrls and zoomers because it was the first Zelda game, not because it’s good.

>upgrading attack power doesn't really matter for the final boss
My friend's savegame was somehow corrupted and it had the sword level showed F (max is 8). He can 1HKO almost everything, including the bosses. But the last boss, Shadow Link, can't be 1HKO'ed. We never know how the sword got F level, but you can try it in emulator. Just change the sword level to 15 (F in hexadecimal).

>first Zelda did nothing well
>is the main inspiration for breath of the wild, considered by many the best Zelda since going 3d

Aonuma: So that’s actually a really good question. When I started making Breath of the Wild, I started thinking about which Zelda title I was able to play with the most freedom. And then I came to the conclusion it was the first Zelda game. When I first played it, I couldn’t defeat Octorok so I got frustrated — they seemed huge and they were so fast. But then I realized it was the most liberating experience that I’ve had. So with Breath of the Wild, Guardian is actually kind of like Octorok. It’s kind of like an octopus. And so to me, Breath of the Wild is kind of like the first title, but it has a different kind of freedom with so much more presence. This is how I started developing Breath of the Wild. To me that’s how it feels.

It seems that Zelda 1 was pretty well liked back in the day, and it managed to build the foundation for the Ocarina of Time you seem to be fond of.
