I've been playing a lot of different PS1 games lately. Many of which are extremely easy to play if you are EOP with either minimal menu usage or none at all, often having a ton of English anyway.

One I've tried is Community Pom. A really pretty top down action game with RPG elements such as inventory management, equipment management and level ups. The combat is fun and you have a nice and varied move set to use too. Best of all it doesn't seem like you need to know Japanese to get very far.

Have you played any particularly stand out titles? They don't have to be Japan only, even games that aren't very well known but were released in many regions would be appreciated.

I like that one too. I think I enjoyed it more than guardian heroes, I felt the lane switching was handled better.

Great third person shooter. If you like FPS games and dungeon crawlers give crime crackers a shot.

So, when do people start posting obscure games?

>> No.5937705

...Iru!

PS1 Jap exclusive first person survival horror in between Clock Tower and Echo Night.

It's quite text heavy so playing it without moonspeaking is not recommended, although I did beat it that way, but never could get all the endings.

The game is more popular now, you can find it on several websites like mobygames etc but until I started spreading word about it online a decade ago it was non existant on the western internet

Japanese make very interesting first person games. Crime Crackers is fantastic if you've never played it. Basically Doom combat in a dungeon crawler shell.

Not obscure but I've been playing Legend of Mana's JP release lately and it has a Pocketstation boardgame minigame. It's not great but it's kind of fun to send your monster out to it and get it XP and random items for your game.

Neorude. A sort of point and click RPG, there was a few more games in the series on the ps1 and there was a port on the Saturn. Most notable for being made by Tecno Soft, who made the Thunder Force series and other shooters. I was able to fumble my way through the first bit but to my knowledge there's no translation.

Guardian Recall on the PC98 and PS1. It's basically a SRPG version of Jojo. Every character has their own unique guardian with their own strengths and weaknesses and if the guardian gets knocked out then the character that controls it also gets knocked out and the same rules applies to the enemies you fight so you're going to keep your characters safe while taking out enemy guardians, or if the situation permits it their masters. You don't have direct control over the guardians and instead have to manipulate them through commands like attack from afar or heal. It definitely has some jank because of this, but not to the point where it gets unfun to play.

The story isn't anything too special since it's basically your simple JRPG plot about a group of teenagers saving the world from a group of evil assholes except this time everyone on both sides are cute girls something that was probably rarer when the game came out compared to now. The characters are fun though and easily make the story worth it. I'm especially fond of Akira. You don't often see many characters that loves tokusatsu as much as she does and every scene with her is a joy. As for the level of Japanese it doesn't have the most complex vocab out there, but it's still a RPG with a good amount of text so you can't get by without knowing how to read your runes.

The PS1 version has more chapters, a hidden bonus character, and other cool things like a in game encyclopedia on things like character and guardian info and other background info so I prefer it to the PC98 version. The PC98 version is a bit more janky since it doesn't handle scrolling that well making map navigation a bit of a pain. It's also got lesbian sex scenes, but there aren't that many of them and they go by pretty quickly so if you want to fap it would be better to just find the CGs online. Making the game all ages for the PS1 definitely wasn't a hard thing to do.
