Not just "muh blood." Plenty of other games had that. Everything about it was cool, especially if you're into martial arts flicks and stuff like Big Trouble in Little China. Plus it was pretty fun to play casually.

If you were alive at the time, you also remembered how insanely lifelike the digitized sprites were and how that factored into the moral panic as well.

DOOM came out less than a year after MK and that served to further frighten White America and the PTA crowd, which then turned the hype up to 11 for kids like us. It's all too hilarious looking back at the hysterical news coverage of those games. Two years later or so, Nintendo reversed their stance on violence and everyone forgot about the video games that were turning children into Satan worshippers.

I also feel like the panic over MK and DOOM was a holdover from the DnD hysterics from the late '80s. But yes, MK is extremely overrated and plays like dogshit today. It's one of those games that does not hold up at all. Still, I loved it so when I was a kid.

Mortal Kombat isn't overrated. Just because something is very popular doesn't make it overrated, most gamers tend to shit on MK like you're doing.

At the end of the day, MK is far from the best fighting franchise in terms of actual gameplay, but it's still fun and a change of pace from the Jap shit, it's just "cool special moves, the game" rather than nothing but anime cliches and ki blasts.

People rag on it for its lack of depth, but that's exactly why the series is still going. Being able to just pick up and play 3/4 of the roster of any particular version makes it way more likely to get people to sit and play.

The original Mortal Kombat was alright, but MK2 is still one of the greatest games of all time, in my opinion. Every character on the roster looked cool and was fun to use, the levels were extremely visually appealing, the music was fantastic and the sound effects were absolutely amazing on the SNES. I never played Street Fighter, but judging by the art-style and more bright, colorful, kid-friendly visuals I just never thought it would be worth trying, whereas MK was very dark, and gritty, which was great.

As a teeanger and in that period of time, I never saw such depth, speed, content, iconic and realistic fighting game as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Now I can see it re-used a lot of thing but it was marvellous for the 16-bit era.
I just loved it and played it to death maining every character and fighting against my cousins. It worth every penny I spend on it.

It's kind of cringey to specify "white America" because of what it implies.

Black America (even still to some degree) has been much more religiously conservative, think we all remember growing up and every black person thought rock music was "that devil shit"

Not for nothing but I think we all know the real reason "black america" didn't freak out about Mortal Kombat and DOOM is much more practical than anything racial, the average urban black person weren't in high positions of power to make the media and also most black families probably couldn't actually afford home consoles
