Daily reminder that Nintendo & Sega both suck dick. PS1 trumped everything after 1995.

Only because nintendo defeated themselves by staying with cartridges for greedy reasons. Sony only succeeded because nintendo got a big head and made mistakes

Nintendo has made mistakes before. Even Sega capitalized on all kinds of things they were doing wrong in the late 80s. Sony was just a monster.

Not like this. Nintendo first pissed off Sony by abandoning the cd drive project THEN they decide since they are top dog they can dictate the industry even with strong momentum for cd roms. It’s a classic example of big top dog company resting on their laurels and not keeping up with trends to stay competitive. Microsoft almost fell to this demise when they missed the mobile boom.

It's kinda crazy looking back on how Sony came out of no where and raped them both,

Sony nailed it right out of the gate
>Built in CD player
>Powerful but still mid-priced hardware
>Fully featured and well documented dev kits
>Cheap to publish on and easy to develop games for
>Receptive to the homebrew community with the net yaroze
>Addresses the hardware limitations with cleaver use of dithering, transparencies and framebuffer effects.
I have a theory. Each retro console generation winner is determined by which system has the most sequels by Capcom. Thoughts?

Only because nintendo committed seppuku

>>5937047
You mean wide 3rd party support? Yeah that’s a no brainer. The droves of developers leaving nintendo because of cartridges is a pretty good case in favor of this observation.

Yes I'm very familiar with the Playstation story but Nintendo has always been a dangerously egotistical company. It was the whole lockout chip/licensing fees/child friendliness "seal of quality" shit that left room for Sega to move jn. Well that and being so damn sure the NES hardware would endure even when competitors were building competitive hardware.

This is an authentic Sony thread. You can tell since there are no games.

Sega didn't dethrone Nintendo though. Sega had some mild success that got smothered out once the SNES moved in. IT's not the same thing as Nintendo betting the house that their reputation and namesake would keep 3rd party developers in their hands when rolling with expensive and severely space limited cartridges for games. Now I'm not calling the playstation a horrible machine despite it being implied. I loved mine. say the console wars was a baseball game. Nintendo intentionally walked 3 batters to load the bases and Sony's home run hitter stepped up to the plate. They still had to knock it out of the park, but the 4 points to be gained was stacked in their favor by Nintendo.

Final Fantasy VII makes OoT look like a borderline bad game. Everything from the art to the nuanced compositions blew OoT out of the water.

>It was the whole lockout chip/licensing fees/child friendliness "seal of quality" shit
Yeah it may have been an overall greedy move but you gotta understand what made that seal was so important in the first place. When the Atari 2600 was at the height of its popularity they didn't do very much to stop the piracy, cart bootlegs and outright code plagiarism that was rampant on their system. In their eyes this was a good thing because they thought "the more games on the market, the mores systems we will sell!" but this turned out to destroy the customer base. When Nintendy developed the seal and the lockout chip it was a kind of band aid so new customers felt more comfortable taking a chance on a new system. Did it stop low quality games from being published? of course not. All it really did was ensure that a game dev "studio" wasn't just 3 guys in a basement shitting out recycled code.

>...like a borderline bad game
There's fanboyism, and then there's profound stupidity. One of these games received universal praise from ALL publications at the time (albeit, begrudgingly), one of these games was given the title of "best game of all time", and one was not.
>But muh gaming press!
Entirely different beast back then. They were just gamers, and didn't lick the boots of devs, fill reviews with identity, or any other kind of politics. They didn't care about that shit. So, if they were unified in their opinion that one game was objectively better than the other, then I was inclined to believe them (and they're still right). You, on the other hand, are clearly some faggy little fanboy, so what you vomit counts for nought.

Not that anon but
>Entirely different beast back then. They were just gamers, and didn't lick the boots of devs
Except they did. Where do you think all that advertising money in game mags came from? And then you've got all those first party endorsed propaganda rags like Nintendo Power and OPM.

Instances like EGM telling Acclaim to fuck off after their bad review of Total Recall were few and far between.
>fill reviews with identity, or any other kind of politics.
Old issues of CGW would prove you wrong. Granted it wasn't widespread like now, but if you didn't think there were politicised writers in enthusiast press, you didn't read much.

Games journalism was always a fucking farce from day one.

>Microsoft almost fell to this demise when they missed the mobile boom.

Microsoft WAS the early mobile boom. The early Tablet PC, Pocket PC, and Windows CE phones were legendary. They were poised to win mobile with superior tooling even after Apple/Google rose to power but the CIA told them to stand down and installed puppet Satya Nadella to make CERTAIN they would stand down.

None of that really came organically from Sony they weren't game developers they just went to tons of developers and asked them what they want.
