Number 1.
too little actual gameplay
Number 2.
hence frequent and long gameplay interruption to stretch game-time with cut-scenes, radio-transmissions etc. etc.
Number 3.
3D gaem, but offers nothing in terms of verticality. You might as well recreate the whole game on MG2 engine and loose nothing gameplay-wise
therefore Number 4.
main gameplay mechanics rely on the 2D minimap, which only takes roughly 1/8th of the screen

the game would have been so much better if it was only VR mission, but double the number.

Yeah, back when i was 12 i thought it was cool, but whenever i look back at the series now i realize just how edgy, wordy, silly, and over the top it is. In story telling more is not always better, and the whole metal gear plot/storyline is so necessarily complex and convoluted. I wouldn't say it's BAD, its entertaining in it's own way, but more often than not it's slogging complexity is mistakenly labeled as some sort of incredibly deep masterpiece.

Looking back: the controls and camera are a bitch and later series refined it a lot. So it's pretty good for its era.

But remember, this was 1998, and they had little to go on for 3D games. They had Resident Evil, and a few other games. Fully 3D and transitioning 2D to 3D was all new, and most of them didn't work. One area they really wanted to fix was picking up items. By making it more abstract, than realistic, it eases picking up items. Just think of Resident Evil style games where you awkwardly move your character to pick up and item and keep failing. nah, make that shit big huge and spinning so it's obvious.

Doing it well? Yeah. 1994-1998 is pure experiemnt time for 3D. And transitioning 2D series to 3D was still problematic. MG is one of the only series that did the transition and survived, along with Zelda. Castlevania, metal Slug, Mega Man, Contra, etc most didn't make the transition. These are still 2D series.

I agree the frequency thing is bad practice, but there were far worse examples of that. I remember Prince of Persia on the DOS would send you to an extra room in between every stage. It would tell you to look up some code in the manual, then go to the corresponding door. If you got it wrong you would start back from the beginning of the game. That was a common was for """"copy protection"""", even if it wasn't effective. I remember at Blockbuster they printed the code on the back of the rental case.
