a mess

has some good ideas, like the art style, but the bigger styles did not fit for the same crammed NES proportions for rooms, making platforming awkward, some ideas like getting items get crippled by needing to finding those special bolts so you can get access to more items.

And finally the untested unpolished Wily bosses who are a pain in the butt, and that shitty horrible Wily capsule, legit nobody tested that part, oh and the off-putting ending, made even worse in localization.

It's the sprites. When you look at any of the NES games side by side with Megaman 7, both scaled to the same resolution, it's clear that Megaman's sprite takes up way more space in MM7. The game feels more clunky, because his jump height and walk speed aren't scaled up proportionally.....

I never thought the ever so slightly bigger Mega Man sprite made the game worse, or clunky, or anything like that.
Level design seems to go accordingly, I never found myself in a situation like "oh, the sprite is too big, I can't make this jump" or something like that.
In fact, the "sprite is too big" complaint is, to me, something recent, I don't remember it from years back. The usual complaint about VII was basically that it wasn't an X game. People got used to walljumping and sliding was just old news by then.
Of course, the real thinking man appreciates both, classic and X series.

>> No.5915724

>>5915695
>I never found myself in a situation like "oh, the sprite is too big, I can't make this jump" or something like that
same. i'd always heard people saying that it's bad because of the size of the sprite and assumed it was true. after playing it i saw that there's almost no truth to that. i'd rather the sprites were smaller, but mainly for aesthetic reasons; the mechanical improvement would only be slight

>> No.5915756

>>5915695
>>5915724
When people say "big sprite" what they really mean is the low FOV which is a consequence of that.

The low FOV is a problem in quite a few situations where you can't see traps of enemies ahead of you. In some cases some enemies can even shoot at you while you can barely see them on the screen.

It gets better when you know the game. When you know what to expect, it's not a problem at all.

>> No.5915774

>>5915756
I don't recall having that issue either, but I haven't played the game in a while.
Enemies attacking from outside your FOV isn't something inherent to sprite size. There's plenty of games that do it. You can still jump or slide to evade attacks coming at you.

>> No.5917059

>>5915756
Low FOV places constraint on the developers as well. Level design that's fine with higher FOV becomes unfair when you can't see as much of the level, ultimately restricting what the designers will do.

Probably because there are more interconnections between stages. For instance stuff to do in a certain order, using a weapon to affect the environmental in another stage, etc

MM8 has no excuse though.

If you want you can use a password that lets you start with all 8 stages but that means skipping both the intro stage and the museum stage

I like Mega Man 7. I like all of the classic Mega Man games. I've spent the past couple years casually playing through the 5 on Game Boy, and this grants me some insight to some of the questions and observations I see in this thread.

>>5918134
>>5918353
Second poster is partially correct; the 4 stages twice is because of the interconnected nature described.

It was designed in such a way because MM7 brought on Minakuchi Engineering (uncredited) to help out. Their mark is all over some of the level+weapon design (compare to MM IV & V for GB especially) and their interactions and the 4 stages twice structure (something in all GB games for the series).

Additionally, you'll note the FOV people have been talking about looks suspiciously similar to a ratio you'd find on... Game Boy. I'm not going to defend it - that's Minakuchi Engineering chilling in their comfort zone because they only had 3 months to develop the game.

There was something about Mega Man games that made bosses seem way cooler than other games. The doors, the hallway, the boss' personalities, getting their weapon.
