Is this the best controller for /vr/? seems to me it works best for pretty much everything. It's the closest to a /vr/ controller as you're gonna get. I tried some of those third party USB NES controllers but they had a shit d-pad and it seems everywhere I look no matter for what "retro" style controller like nes/snes, I always see complaints about the d-pad being garbage. Why is it so fucking hard to just make a good d-pad? even microsoft couldn't get this shit right with the 360 gamepad.

As far as just going to any game store and picking one up, yes it's the best controller you can get for /vr/ games.
I've been using a DS3 for years and I've never had an issue. It may not be THE best for certain hardcore games like shmups (that would go to the saturn controller), but it's still miles ahead of anything xbox or third party shit. Seriously stay the fuck away from third party retro controllers unless they say hori on them, they're going to be shit.

Just put a fucking circle cut out of a Pringles can lid behind the dpad on your 360 controller and it magically becomes favorably comparable to a Saturn dpad.

I heard this works and it's fairly easy to make vast improvements to the 360's dpad, but in the end you'd still be stuck with the dpad in the "secondary" position and it just doesn't feel as good. Dualshocks are great because they have analog sticks and dpads without making either one feel like an afterthought.

I have been switching between xbox one and cheap old logitech controller (pic related).
The xbox d-pad is more precise, but it feels like I have to move my thumb more. It's comfortable, even for longer sessions.
The logitech is more spongy but travel is shorter and faster. Thumb feels sore after a day of play, tho.
I really want something with good balance between precision, travel and comfort, but I'm still skeptical about trying a DS4.

Basically, what makes a good dpad is "comfort" (subjective) and "precision" (objective). The Nintendo "cross" style dpad was a brilliant creation to give tactile feedback ("precision") by unequivocally separating the cardinal directions. The original Playstation controller is essentially a rip-off of the SNES controller but the "cross dpad" was distinct enough Sony felt the need to create something decidedly different but it still follows this philosophy it just does it in a way that I personally think is a little worse in terms of comfort because you end up dragging your thumb across the edges of the plastic X that separates the segments.

Notice how advocates of these type of pads (Nintendo and Sony style) rarely complain about the "mushiness", they complain about false diagonals. That's because they can absolutely feel with their thumbs when they're pressing "left" and if the pad is too soft and can rock too far then it'll also register a "down" at the same time.

But we live in the future. This design philosophy has been arguably invalid ever since the Saturn 2 controller came along and proved that a "bowl" shaped pad can be "precise" by giving tactile feedback from the actual contact rather than the artificial tactile feedback from a cross or segmented dpad - and I believe that a "bowl" is the most comfortable, though the texture and pattern of its surface matters a lot.

These days there's absolutely no reason that any dpad should not be giving "true" tactile feedback and indeed WiiU Pro controllers and DS4 controllers do but they still use their legacy dpad form for the purposes of branding and with the additional benefit of all gaming back on the fake tactile feedback of and when their membranes or domes get beat to hell.

Conversely, modern controllers with "bowl" dpads rely much more heavily on the actual feel of the underlying "mechanism" and if it's too soft gamers will instantly call it "mushy", the unmodified 360 dpad being a prime example.
