I thought you guys would get a kick out of these- i've had the old pictures of me scanned forever.

The one with the NES is about 1988- I had begged my folks for TWO YEARS to get an NES. They got ours from one of the local 'Shopper'-type newspapers, and even then it only came with Stinger, I think. It took a lot of chores to earn Super Mario Brothers, lol.

The one with the Game Boy I think is about 1991. The yellow box underneath the Game Boy box is Super Mario Land and I want to say maybe the one underneath that is Castlevania Adventure. I was SO SURE I was going to get a Game Boy that Christmas I had somehow convinced my grandparents to let me get it when we visited at Thanksgiving.

Thankfully, I don't have the same haircuts.

Not OP, but yeah, those old Zenith's had a late-'60s early-'70s look to them. We had ours from I think 1981 up until 1996 or so. My parents owned it prior to me being born I know.

I remember a tech coming out to replace a vacuum tube on it. Or at least I think that was what the big glass tube he took out of it was. It came off a circuit board that had other big glass tubes mounted to it.

Imagine being a kid having a monster tv, with actual good clarity, sound banging, internet to play with the bros, etc. The best I had was taking my heavy ass desktop to a friends to play Starcraft lan because my friends families refused them internet. I don't regret or feel I missed out, but I do think kids these days are not missing shit but maybe some small respect for how good they have it.

It's called a console TV. Back when TVs were still new-ish, they were quite the room staple they are now, so higher-end ones were designed to match wood furniture. They peaked in popularity during the 70s, but Zenith was still making new versions of them into 2004.

We weren't in the US yet in 1988 and by the time we got here November 1990, that haircut had generally fallen out of favour. Or, at least, it had done in the Northeastern US, it seems. I had a bowl cut all through the 80s back in home country and kept this look until summer 1996 when I got that bicycle-helmet-looking one popular at the time. I looked like the stereotypical foreign kid.

I didn't post it but I actually went and took a peek at a 1969 Sears catalog and those 26 inch console TVs were $600-$700 in it which makes that $800-$900 price in the mid-80s quite interesting. There was a lot of inflation in the late 70s so its technically more affordable but for the price to have remained so consistent for so long really good to show why those TVs were still getting used and even professionally repaired by middle aged people well into the 90s.

I was born in '99 but we still had an NES, one of the first video games I ever played was Mario/Duckhunt.
I don't have it anymore, my parents loaned it to our neighbor when he and his wife adopted a special ed son who I would hang out with on occasion.. Long story short the son got moved to a different home and the wife became a Jehovah witness, after that my neighbor started drinking heavy and fell into a depression, years later in my teens I asked him what happened to my old console, he sold it and all the games for booze. All i really wanted was my copy of Mario/Duckhunt so I had something to put on my shelf and show my children one day.
My parents also sold our N64 at a garage sale for 12 dollars around the same time we lent out our NES.

Keeping with the Christmas theme and because >>5908741 mentioned them, my mom was a Witness and all my family were back in Europe so I never got Christmas/birthday/namesday gifts growing up. Instead, I got at least one game for every straight-A report card, as well as just getting games at random times for no particular reason and saving money up from helping this nice blind German lady who lived near by and buying my own. Honestly wouldn't trade that for what other kids had cuz I wound up getting like a dozen games per year or something, although I do get jealous of kids who got to tear open Christmas gifts. Always looked fun AF to me.
