I fire this up once or twice a year and try to hit all the areas in as few playthroughs as possible. I beat it daily after school for about 2 years. Good game, I doubt ninty will ever make another one and it'll probably be bad if they do.

A direct sequel to 64 would be nice, starting from whatever mission they were running off to at the end. That way they could ignore everything thay came after 64. Modern ideas like customizable vehicles could be cool, grind some procedurally generated levels blowing up bad guys to get enough resources to do something like decrease the charge time for your laser or increase the time you have before your arwing needs to cool down. Pure open world wouldn't work, something like the original Fallouts where you can travel to different areas to explore might be ok. Multiple ways to complete missions could be interesting, attack a base head on with the arwing or take the landstalker through a sewer to take out power stations to reduce defenses while the team causes a distraction. One way you will have a higher chance of taking damage and more enemies, another you have a chance of losing team members if you don't move quickly enough. Even just more levels with branching paths. It'd give it some replay value.

I'd prefer something as straight forward and to the point of the originals but they would never do that in this era.

Post yer highscores, lads.

I myself am sitting pretty at 1,927.

i was going for 1997 (since thats the year it came out and it gives it that big cinematic intro) but I was already pushing myself to get 1927 never mind another 70 hits.

I was playing on Normal mode, I don't bother with Professional, you're basically guaranteed to lose your lasers on Katina and that means losing out on lots of hits. Basically resetting the system at that point.

Also , best route:
CORNERIA
METEO (hyperspace version)
KATINA (destroy the ship but leave it to the last minute)
SECTOR X (normal way but save Slippy)
MACBETH (hit the switches)
AREA 6
VENOM 2

You should be looking for 200 on Corneria, anything over 350 on Meteo is good, the higher the better (370-390), 210 on Katina, 260 on SX, 200ish on Macbeth, and that guaranteed 227 on Venom.
That should be 1400-1600 ish.

It's all about Area 6 though, isnt it? It's a real hit or miss level. you can scrape thru with 300 and having hit fuck-all; or you can come out smiling with 480.
Assuming you hit 480 on A6 that gives 1,967.

Ahhh! So close to 1997.

Broke 2500 recently on expert. My route is: Corneria, Sector Y, Aquas, Zoness, Macbeth, Area 6, Venom 2. Red line but with Macbeth instead of Sector Z since there are way more points on Macbeth.
I've played your route too and I got 2327. Not on expert mode because Katina would be annoying to do then.

>It's all about Area 6 though, isnt it?
It's a difficult level because there's so much going and and you have to spam your lasers a lot. It's also easy to lose 5 points on the boss if you take too long and don't get the HIT+10. If you got almost 500 that's pretty good. I can get over 600 sometimes. On Corneria take Falco's route if you aren't already, it gives you more points even if you're planning to go to Meteo anyway.

>just do a sequel that isn't fucking garbage or redone over again
I said it before and I'll say it again: both Assault and Zero show that you just can't please fans of the first two Star Fox games (or three if you count the recently officially released SF2). Change it and people complain they want it to be more like 64, try to do the same thing as 64 did and they complain it's a rehash. Aside from what Zero actually did wrong it was more or less doomed from the start, just like that other sequel that Nintendo made and people are still sour over.

At this point I don't even really care anymore what they'll do with star fox because there's just no way it will ever vanish my nostalgia for both starfox on SNES and 64 on the N64.

They should just do a spiritual sequel to Lylat Wars but with HD graphics. I think that's what people are crying out for, really.

People have also been crying out for a HD spiritual sequel to Ocarina and it STILL hasn't been made.
Twilight doesn't count, all that Wolf bullshit then the game was just shit, and Skyward ... who even bought that. No, do a Ocarina-style quest (no dicking about in the sky or as a wolf, just a straight up vanilla Zelda, get the sword, do the temples, do some sidequests, talk to some NPCs, fight the final boss) but in HD.
Breath of Wild was crap and plus it wasn't really HD.

But really, the spiritual successor to Lylat Wars is the Rogue Squadron games on Gamecube. High speed, space laser combat in HD.

when i say not garbage, i mean none of that stealth section shit in Zero or Assault's terribly rush Single Player (which Uprising fixed upon)

the gameplay formula however needs to be competent like 64's single player gameplay and banter, Assault and 643D's multiplayer, and Zero's dogfights and giant bosses.

Nintendo should have let Platinum have full reigns on doing a WiiU Star Fox but they decided to let that old fucker Miyamoto to shoo horn his bullshit from his old Star Fox Wii project (which became Zero afterwards)

PG only did HD assets for the game and nothing else important.

Really different approach, although both have homing attacks/lock on, Panzer Dragoon's gameplay revolves more around rotating the camera 360, while Star Fox revolves more on actual airship maneuvers (you can't really do much with the dragon other than moving).

Yeah I do that. Charge-Unlocked-Shot and if enemies are in the blast radius you get bonus Hit Plus points. I sometimes pause then press L, and this turns off the aiming reticule, which sometimes makes charge unlocked easier to do. It's a hard technique to get a hold of though and to my mind it works well only on certain levels. It's difficult to work it on Katina, for example, because the way the enemies fly in the all-range mode field. The CUS is better for when they're flying straight at you. But yes, I do that technique as far as I can.

>>5904319
I forgot it's actually called Expert Mode, i thought it was called Professional for some reason, I haven't played this game in years.
on Expert mode which you unlock after getting medals on all the missions, more enemies appear, so it's possible to get higher scores.
However, if you hit ONE enemy or object, your wings fall off instantly (normally takes 2-3 hits for this to happen) and you thus lose all upgrades to your lasers. The weaker lasers take longer to destroy enemies, especially later in the game.

So on levels like Zoness, Area 6, Katina, and so on, with a lot of enemies / debris flying around, and lots of landscape to fly into, it becomes very difficult to not lose your lasers.

If you lose your lasers you will miss out on loads of kills so you may as well restart the whole run, which really becomes annoying after a while, especially as this is an arcade-style linear game, so it's a game you get into the habit of replaying time and time again, regardless of whether you lost your lasers or not.
Having played this game a lot ANYWAY, i wasn't really willing to sit through having to play those first 2 -3 missions again.. and again... and again...
So most SF64 hiscore runs will mention if its Pro or Normal mode, cos theres more kills available on Pro.

Fox wears sunglasses on Professional mode too, which is cool. There was a rumour you were playing as Fox's dad on Pro, coshe wears sunglasses in Venom.

Assault has loads of boring walking sections that ruin the tempo. Star Fox is best when you're in the Arwing.

Also it came out so late in the Gamecube's lifespan that it just didn't make much of an impact. If Star Fox Adventures had been the HD Lylat Wars 2 that i said everyone was waiting for, it would have been a huge hit (Adventures came out in early in the GC's life, in time for the Gamecube's first Christmas.)

But as it was, Star Wars Rogue squadron 2 was what Star Fox Adventures should've been (infact, Adventures shouldn't have been what it was at all, it should have been it's own N64 game, Dinosaur Planet. it got the Star Fox licence later in its development)

then of course Rogue Squadron 3 included all those walking missions, which ruined ITS pacing.

They should really stop making "You get out the cockpit in this one!" be the tag. We don't want to get out the cockpit!

Even the tank levels in Star Fox 64 are only good because they are limited.
