The first time I tried to buy a Saturn was when FuncoLand was clearing them out for $30 in 2000. By the time I got there, they were sold out.
I finally got a Model 2 Saturn in 2008 from a friend of a friend for like $20. I bought a few games for it, then sold it off because it's just too damn expensive to collect for.

There's lots of videos on YouTube talking about the Saturn and why it failed. They all mention how people had a sour taste in their mouth after the Sega CD and 32X. I had one. I told my mom I wanted a Sega cd but she bought me a Sega Saturn with the 3 pack in games.. virtua fighter 2, daytona and virtua cop 1. I fucking loved it. I got puzzle fighter and dragon force, both panzer dragoon rail shooter games and nights with Christmas nights. I also got Sega rally. I wanted to play rpgs so fucking bad and it's the only thing I was jealous of the psx people for.

the demo disc was also awesome to me as a kid and I played the shit out of it. I think I got lucky by basically getting mostly good games instead of the shit ones.

>> No.5900458

>>5900312
The Sega CD wasn't even awful, it had some pretty good games on it, it's just that this was the time of the FMV game fad, which was an extremely ill fated idea brought on by the vastly superior storage capacity of compact discs.
Sega decided to market the Sega CD addon as an FMV machine, which I think was an incredibly bad idea given the obviously short shelf life of the fad, and the fact that the machine was actually pretty bad at handling FMV, always looking worse than on other systems.

What they should have done (here we go with hindsight and armchairing) is to try to push for better use of the new format, more content, levels, characters, items, sound, music (recorded music even), animation frames, etc, etc. There were some games which did this to good results, but they were crowded out by FMV faggotry. I'm not familiar enough with the technology to say if it's possible, but the idea strikes me of using the game cartridge slot for some kind of memory cartridge, which you could maybe write some savefiles to for the CD games, though I'm kind of just fantasizing and speculating here.
The 32X was a complete mistake though.

the turbografx (PC Engine) CD add-on generally made you use Hucards (cartridges) that contained extra RAM on them

Sega first party titles were a lot of fun, however owning the Saturn in lieu of the Playstation meant missing out on a lot of the fun that my peers were having. even if we got the start of a 3rd party franchise, we often didn't get any sequels (Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Nascar 98, Road Rash, et cetera.) I often lamented the lack of new games (particularly Sonic games, although I did enjoy the 3 that actually came out on the Saturn). It was kinda like a dry spell until 9.9.99 when I got my Dreamcast.

Why can't PlayStation NPCs let people discuss other 5th gen systems?
Anyway, yes I had Saturn back in the day, enjoyed NiGHTS, Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Fighter Kids, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon II and Die Hard Arcade immensely.
Over time, games became harder to find at stores, so I ended up playing Playstation and N64 more, but Saturn always remained special to me. The colorful graphics from NiGHTS is something I never saw on PS1.

Saturns 3D was better in theory, but programming for it was so arcane that the final product came out looking worse than the other two consoles

Got one on Christmas with the 3 game pack - Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, VF2.

Then later had NiGHTS with the 3D controller and Sonic Jam.

Enjoyed it until 2001 when I got a PS2.

The Saturn has two advantages in 2D graphics.
>tilemap hardware
but the PS1 is fast as shit anyway so it can easily just brute-force to get the same results
>more video RAM
three 512k chunks of memory, one for sprites, one for backgrounds, one for the framebuffer
in contrast, the PS1 has only a single 1MB chunk of memory that it has to put the framebuffer and graphics into (this is literally the only reason PS1 fighting game ports look worse), and there's no way to put add-on memory on the PS1

>>5901859
>the 3d video capability was flaming garbage
Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Virtua Fighter 2, and NiGHTS don't look bad, and those are games an ordinary Saturn owner would have been expected to have.
It's got plenty issues, but there were games released that could make an attempt to compete with the PS1 there.

One kid in my class had one. He was one of those rich kids who had everything so it almost doesn't count.
Most had PS1s, some had n64s, one or two had Saturn. Also by mid '98 Saturn was kind of over, even the magazine stopped publishing at that time, so when that gen of gaming really got going in 99/2000 saturn was already replaced by DC.

Dreamcast was a HUGE deal at the time, but not many people actually got one - more than what got a Saturn though.

Saturn really just isn't that good of a console.

If nobody got it at launch it would never get the chance to get support and get good. Obviously I see the point but at the same time we see that as more and more people are hesistant to spend, and more and more straight up almost only pirate things, the industry falls apart and goes into the shitter being dominated by the lowest common denominator who buy shit due to marketing hype and can sustain that cycle forever. Fans of anything above the level of 'casualized FPS, BR, Open World, Sports' shit have removed themselves from the equation and now there isn't even a very big market for good games.

What was the logic behind killing saturn in summer 98 and wait over a year to release Dreamcast in europe and america? Did they rely on PC ports for a full year?

>> No.5903580

some of what you're saying there is true, and I agree paying money for things you enjoy is necessary (e.g., one can hardly say "I hate what music has become now" then in the same sentence admit one hasn't bought an album in over 10 years. That there is the problem!)

However - buying consoles at launch was always a dumb move, even when the industry was in rude health. I know you probably know but heres some reasons why just for any Zoomers reading:
>Price.
Obviously, consoles on launch date are at full RRP. 299.99 or 199.99 as was back in the day (but then, £200 in the mid 90s is basically £300 today,, so same difference.)

Full RRP, no discounts, no promos, and usually, no free games or controllers - maybe some cheaper store will be selling for 297.99 or something as opposed to 299.99 but who cares?

>Poor range of titles
Generally, the longer a system is around, the better the lineup of games for it. Just think for two seconds about great games on consoles. Rarely if ever were they launch games, or even within the first year. Pokemon is the best Gameboy game and it came out in 1999 !

>Not fully debugged
The X360 RROD springs to mind. An X360 with a manufacture date of 2006 or before will RROD. The 2008 onwards models don't.

Also, now consoles are re-released periodically with bigger memories, etc. Why get an original Xbone when you can get a X1S or an X1X?

Or, wait a year or two and get an Xbone but £100 cheaper?

>It's for richfags.
Poorfag as i was/am, i would have to wait til Christmas for something like a console. The rich kid who had every console would get them at launch. It just wasn't even an option for me, and still isn't, even if I wanted to do it.

>> No.5904234

if the saturn was so popular in japan, why did it almost completely lose support once the dreamcast came out?

Agree with you completely. I think people hardcore into games aren't idiots for buying by the reasons I listed, while I think casual players would be idiots to buy as per the reasons you listed. If I was super into current games I would buy what I was interested in at launch, but now I have the 'hunch' that most games suck and barely play anything new. If something looks like it had a lot of work and care put into it I might buy right away. Don't get that feeling often.

I got the Sega Saturn for Christmas. Came packaged with Virtua Fighter 2 and then my parents bought Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, & Panzer Dragoon. Loved that Christmas, but I also received a PlayStation that Christmas, as well, with RIIIIDDDGEEEE RAAACCEEER. Ultimately, having owned a Jaguar, N64, PlayStation, and Saturn, all at the same time, I'd say my personal playtime would look like...

>Saturn
>N64

The Saturn was very much a machine for friends. Every weekend me and a few friends would go round a mates house and we would play:

Guardian Heroes
Puzzle Fighter
Dark Stalkers
XMen COTA
SF Alpha 2
Saturn Bomberman

and a good few others and believe me, we were on that shit for hours. When it was just me and him we went through Sega Rally, Nights, Bug, Sonic Jam, Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon 2 & Saga, fighting Vipers, Fighters Megamix, Sonic R, Dragon Force, Shining the Holy Ark... Personally I loved the machine but was far from blind to its flaws. 3D Performance was seriously lacking and struggled against the Playstation. He had a PS as well when it came out and FF7 was the game that cemented the machines death. That said, I still break mine out from time to time. Saturn Bomberman has never been bettered, especially hi-tenning that shit.

It's not a criticism, it's just most people don't know how good the Saturn is because they never bothered playing the imports. I won't bother with arguing what's better or not because that boils down to subjectivity, but if you enjoy arcade/arcade-style games the Saturn is the better deal.

>but if you enjoy arcade/arcade-style games the Saturn is the better deal.
This is where, as a Segafag, I can see the reasoning behind PS1 being the best of 5th gen, because it had a good selection of the popular genres of both Saturn and N64, arcade games and 3D platformers/exploration adventure games. I picked up a PS1 recently and am having a blast with all the Namco arcade games.
