*IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING EVERYONE BELIEVE CRTS LOOKED LIKE SHIT*

>> No.5895220

I exclusively play with those because that's how everyone played. If I wanted everything to look "good" I'll just play in an emulator. In fact I had played my genesis with the coaxial not even plugged in but dangling behind the TV for weeks and I'll do it again.

>> No.5895223

nah, composite on a crt still looks so much better than RGB upscaled to a flat screen

good fucking grief, no wonder nobody bothers to visit this board much any more when this level of intellectual retardation is here.

>> No.5895250

Your "standard" gives an objectively worse picture quality than what CRT TVs are actually capable of displaying

>> No.5895263

>>5895207
composite doesn't even look that bad on a regular CRT most of the time. It just really looks like ass on a digital display where it's blown up and stretched, not to mention the input lag and mishandling of 240p as 480i with tons of artifacts.

Obviously s-video/component/RGB are better, but still.

>> No.5895275

Pan and scan video transfers of things shot on film are way more responsible for that

It's less annoying with a tv with good blacks, but all of those old tricks really are terrible. The only mild saving grace is that stereo sound was almost universal by the time home video was available.

This.
Actually, if OP would have been alive back in the day, he'd know composite was a huge upgrade from RF, which is what actually looked bad due to ghosting and other artifacts. Composite looked consistent, no weird shadowing or ghosting.
Also nobody believes CRTs looked like shit, there's a reason why people who are into retro video games want one.
The main complaints about CRTs is "muh space" and "muh too expensive" for a few hundreds, if that (but they don't hesitate to pay thousands for some 4K TV)

>> No.5895305

Europe had RGB, while americucks had to deal with composhite.

>> No.5895309

>>5895297
Even the main reason RF looked bad was how much interference was around comparatively. Between the change from analog to digital broadcast, major changes in how much shielding goes into modern wiring, and how many electronics just don't produce as much these days, you can get a pretty good picture if you're not in a city or near a train station or something.

Unimaginable luxury, as a kid I played spectrum / SMS / MD through RF (on a small cheap TV that I don't think even had inputs for anything else) and so did everyone else I knew. Having a "high quality" picture back then meant you'd managed to get it to be in colour and not ghosting or shimmering too badly.

A CRT by itself can't add black bars top/bottom, that's your source device.

I was lucky.
A local Hollywood Video had an anime section and put the Project A-Ko series in there.
It's full of great late-80s fanservice.

only problem console is genesis in that regard. At least of consoles that matter. Everything else could do s-video or component. Or lacked those but also lacked RGB as well, like NES.

Most consoles have boards available that digitize the signal and usually upscale to 720 or 1080. Dreamcast and N64 seem to be the most popular.

Uh, no, I don't think that counts.
HDMI should be separated into a different tier. It's not good for SD signal. Just as SD output isn't good for HD signal.

MAD LAD. Make sure to keep the sharpness low (40% or lower) and also picture and brightness low too - lower picture all the way then bring up just to the point where you start to see pixel bloom in white colors. This maximizes the cozy softness of composite (or rf) w/ great scanlines.

>>5895309
True facts. Even better if you plug a shielded rca cable into the console then use a rca to f-type adapter to hook into tv.
