I had one of these as a wee lad and it was basically a pokemon machine, I also played mario land 2, and gargoyle's quest, shantae and wario land later in life when I emulated them on my PSP.

Any other games that would be worth revisiting in your opinion? I think it may be time to dust off the old emulator

I'm a wayforward-boo so the quality of this thing might be dubious.
This game has one of the coolest debug modes ever, where the characters talk, entirely in first person and in-character, about the game development process.

It's the single most shovelware-laden system in gaming history, with only 25 games actually worth playing.
The backlit model 101 SP though is one of the single best options out there for playing original Game Boy games.

The quality that those "quality of life" features add is subjective. I for one don't want speedboosting, wall-jumping, and least of all maps in my "finding my way out of a underground cavern complex and hoping not to run into an alien while I have 30 health" simulator. And FUCK Sakamoto's incessant need to shoehorn Ridley into every game.

AM2R is a bastardization of Metroid II but a great spiritual prequel to Super Metroid. I have yet to see anyone who genuinely loved Return of Samus for what it was say they prefer AM2R. That game was made by people who thought the original needed to be "fixed". "Updated" to the series "standards"

After all the changes Samus Returns and AM2R made, neither feel like the same game. I hate to use the word "soul" here, but both remakes really like different beasts altogether.

But yeah, at least AM2R doesn't fuck with the ending. Fucking Ridley in the one game that didn't need him.

I can see how the soul of Metroid 2 is far removed in the remakes. I do like them all on their own merits, the final boss of AM2R feels pure, raw, and authentic.

I agree, the atmosphere in Metroid II is great. In fact, I don't think it's been matched since then with the exception of a few areas in Super Metroid. There's just no getting lost in Metroid games anymore, and part of the magic of going back to Metroid II after some time of not playing it is seeing if you can remember where all the Metroids are.
