English language/international "mainstream" stuff is quite well preserved on archive.org, but much of the more localized stuff has been lost.

There's this bizarre case of local national library having the whole file library of the largest Finnish BBS (Mikrobitti magazines MBnet), but due to some bizarre copyright lawyer bullshit they are unable to give any meaningful access to it, even when all the files were originally meant to be freely distributed.

For a few years I ripped ps1 and ps2 and DC games. I also used to rip and check 360 games. I owned at the time 1000+ ps1/2 and about 100 DC. For 360 I ripped 50 games of my own and about 100+ rented from Blockbuster. I didn't rip stuff I didn't own until 360 era. Everything I uploaded was done for sites that are now gone. The iso still exist elsewhere though, some in full sets. This was at a time when certain games were just rare enough to where no one that did rips had uploaded them. Stuff like Monster Attack for ps2 or Hogs of War for ps1.

The OLD way to share was to make email accounts that had 100-500mb of storage and use account downloaders to spread files and make backups available. When google or whatever caught on you changed to the backup accounts. Torrents were not reliable enough and sites like mega or rapidshare required people pay to get easy access.

I only dumped a couple of C64 games on tape that I bought back in the day before the tapes got unreadable (two already were). But there's no use in uploading those somewhere else, since all of those games were already cracked and available as ROMs. But mine were the uncracked originals still with their original loaders intact. Too bad that I couldn't dump some of them since they're either already corrupted or used more complex loading schemes, like multiloader tapes (which I dumped anyway but couldn't check yet if all the levels were loading correctly like Turrican 1 + 2 or Bard's tale). The single load tapes worked fine though beside a text adventure called "Venom".

And it wasn't that hard after all. I just connected the audio-out of my stereo (still has a tape drive, I bought this one for this very reason) to the audio-in of my laptop and recorded it into Audacity, fiddled with the setting a bit and finally put the audio through UberCassette (that I had to compile for my Mac first) which made TAP files out of the data found in the audio files. Later I cleaned the TAP files up with FinalTAP, that I had to use through Wine since I never owned any Microsoft Soft or Hardware.

Most games have english let's plays out there, but many of the ones in the 80s and early 90s don't have completed ones unless they are simple platformers.
