Hello /vr/. Well, the first romhack suggestion/discussion thread was such a success (boards.4chan.org/vr/res/500860) I'm starting up a second one.

This is basically a romhack general thread. The emphasis is on romhack suggestions and tutorials (i.e. where/how to acquire them). As suggested last thread, it's also a thread for romhack reviews! If you have played some good romhacks (or bad) we'd not only like you to suggest them and give pertinent sourcing info, but please tell us about the game. Was it good, was it bad, what didn/din't you like about it, graphics, ease of use, sound, etc etc etc.

All romhack suggestions, discussions, troubleshooting/help, reviews: all here please, kindly, and thank you. Please try and be civil: all experience levels of this subject matter are welcome, from the new anon who knows nothing about what romhacks are to the 10+year veteran romhack creators themselves. Please, I ask, be kind to one another and help each other. Thanks to everyone that contributes!

It's kind of a romhack and kind of not, but there's a utility out there to randomize the GBA pokemon games that's fun to mess around with.

I believe there's also a similar utility for Super Metroid.

I wish. Unfortunately no one has gone full roguelike with this idea yet. Game randomizers randomize everything from starters to wild encounters to every trainer and gym leader set.

It's not just GBA either, all of them can be randomized.

I would kill for this to be done to GSC.

For pokemon: You can set the things you want randomized, but I think the maps always stay the same. Wild and starter pokes definitely, and I think you can randomize what trainers have, but I don't remember if you can randomize like, where and how many.

http://pokehacks.dabomstew.com/randomizer/

I think that's what I used, but I don't quite remember.

For Super Metroid: I believe it just shuffles around where the powerups are.

I don't actually know off hand where to find this, I've just seen speedrunners mess around with it.

Suggestions for these threads.: They should be called generals, or whatever, but at least have the general format. There should be a mega upload folder in the OP that can easily be accessible, along with some paste bins and other resource links.

Reposing from the older thread.

You should check this beast out. Donner Party, a ROM hack of Monster Party. Sure it's a "bad hack", but it's quite an extensively hacked one as well. Even features new music (though it doesn't sound very good as opposed to something made in FamiTracker, but making music for the NES with machine code is fucking nuts), with such hits as "The Beautiful People" by Marilyn Manson, "Backstabber" by Ke$ha, and "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley. It also has a guest appearance by Lady Gaga!

Hey, MegaFolderAnon, there was a little hiccup with the invitation you sent me...
>Due to our cryptographic security model, the owner of the shared folder
needs to be online during or after your registration for you to gain access.

So yeah, I can't use it yet.

For the moment, I uploaded in a different account.a few Mega Man hacks you didn't have

>Mega Man (USA) [Hack By Dragon Eye Studios v0.46] (~Mega Man Wily's Conquest).zip
>Mega Man 2 (USA) [Hack By B.Hornet] (~Rockman EXILE).zip
>Mega Man 2 (USA) [Hack By Dragon Eye Studios v0.71b] (~Mega Man Wily's Conquest 2).zip
>Mega Man 4 (USA) [Hack By infidelity v.Mini Beta 2.0] (~Mega Man Ultra 2).zip
>Mega Man 5 (USA) [Hack By Dragon Eye Studios v0.311] (~Mega Man 5 Time Attack).zip
>Rockman 2 (Japan) [Hack By Wined] (~Rockman 2 Gray Zone).zip
>Rockman 4 (Japan) [Hack By Puresabe v.MMC3] (~Rockman 4 Minus Infinity).zip
>Rockman 4 (Japan) [Hack By Puresabe v.MMC5 for Netopia] (~Rockman 4 Minus Infinity).zip
>Rockman 4 (Japan) [Hack By Puresabe v.MMC5] (~Rockman 4 Minus Infinity).zip
>Rockman 5 (Japan) [Hack By TAR] (~Rockman 5 Wily's Dream Space).zip

Out of these, I recommend, of course, Rockman 4 Minus Infinity (which has been discussed a lot by now), Rockman 2 Gray Zone, and Wily's Dream Space... all of which have complete-level modifications.

Here they are: https://mega.co.nz/#F!NoVFACzD!YJpUPh5PnBRZDqEGZw8yaw

Also, I couldn't make torrentzip work, so I just zipped them on 7zip. I hope it's ok..?

(Personally, I don't story roms zipped because I like to double-click them, and avoid such long file-names because they give me trouble when opening the rom on different places like XBMC or console emulators. I made an effort to be consistent with the naming convention of the folder!)

Not quite a ROM hack that I'm working on, but there was a "translation" that fixed the sound test menu to have English. Nope, theres been rom hacks before cutoff date, and at most time they are same games, but with diffrent levels, and so on.

And gba, psp, etc are allowed(as far as I know) as long as its related to retro, like for example emulating nes on them (or playing gb/c games on gba), or other old consoles/handhelds, but talking about acual games made for it arent, because they arent retro and made after cutoff date.

It amazes me what's on the mind of people coming to a good, functional, enjoyable, and on-topic thread, and thinks the right thing to do is to come and post something like that. What's on his mind afterwards? "Yeah, that'll teach'em"? Even if it wasn't /vr/ material, it's a good thread anyway. People are contributing, people are interested. Just use some common sense.
This is exactly why I left 4chan some years ago, and why I came back when I discovered /vr/ and saw things being interesting, fun and nice for once. I know the best thing is to ignore this kind of things, but it's just incomprehensible how much people can miss the point here.

Dammit dammit dammit.

So, I found the original NND videos of the author showcasing the hack, though they've since been removed (video page is there but can't view the video). However I decided to check if Wayback Machine would happen to have any old versions of the page cached.

Looks like the Part 2 video had a download link, but the site it was hosted on no longer works.

http://web.archive.org/web/20071012075208/http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1177713

I was curious that the last line says "IPS" in the middle,

You sure it was released at all? Maybe it's an abandoned project that only exists in video form.

So I figured I'd ask this question here, since it's a fairly odd one. Are there any good hacks that allow for two players to have fun together without ruining the experience? I was thinking of sitting down and playing some with my bro.
Bonus points if you know they'll run on a modded wii without too much of a hassle. Obviously I'll test all suggestions, but, I was curious if anyone had any recommendations about this?

That's not to say half of it isn't really questionable, though, in both design and difficulty. It isn't as bad as SMWCP, though.

I'm going to get (justly) lampooned for this, but I actually really like some of the Touhoumon rom hacks. They're a fair bit more challenging than the base Pokemon games, as is a given, but I also feel that it's way better balanced and has some really neat mechanics. For instance, most of the Touhoumon have a base form, an evolved form, and two or three stone evolutions, like Eevee. Unlike Eevee, though, you can also do side-evolutions, in that you can give an evolved Touhoumon another kind of stone and it'll change forms. It allows you to keep the Touhoumon you like in your party and change them to fit the circumstances, and basically every Touhoumon is worth training in some way.

There's still stat variance between the different kinds, of course, but the gap between a really good 'mon and a really bad one is far lessened, to the extent that no 'mon is inherently awful. And, of course, you get to play with dolls in frilly dresses.

Keep in mind that it depends on the hack, though. Some are actually pretty bad, in that they're buggy, poorly balanced, and full of Engrish, but this particular hack for Emerald is really good: http://lkaexe.supersanctuary.net/thmnemer18/

So I've been trying to get these romhacks to work on Earthbound.
Sword of Kings - http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/736/

New Controls - http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1111/

After patching them successfully with both IPSWin and Lunar IPS, I don't see any changes. I can't judge the first one, but I know that the new controls aren't implemented when I start up the game in ZSNES. HOWEVER! When I start it up and pick my save file when using SNES9x 1.53 Windows 64-bit, everything goes batshit. Out of nowhere, I get borked up logos and then a tiled background of Giygas. I NOPED the hell out of the emulator after that.

Looking at least at the "New Controls" patch it looks like you should check to see if your ROM has a header or not before patching. I patched my copy of Earthbound which I got from my No-Intro set, and it's a headerless SFC format ROM.

I used LunarIPS for patching, and the bsnes performance core on RetroArch for testing. Seeing as I couldn't run into issues, I've uploaded it to the Mega folder, I included a "controls.txt" file with it too.

Direct link for those who don't want to go searching through the folder link (though you can run a search through it)

Just don't expect this. Megamix 3.0 is like the Half Life of sonic hacks. The community just started to change art and the very idea of making a custom boss was out of the question. Custom music was a no go for regular folk as well. The homing attack along with custom characters really made people want to make their hack like Megamix, causing lots of "clones." It didn't help that someone hacked Sonic Retro's database and stole the Megamix dissassembly and posted it online for everybody and their dog to see. Every so often people have been caught using stolen Megamix code in their hacks, mainly at SSRG.

>few actually attempt to hack a save feature in

>which is usually hack specific

I'm not Chuck Peddle or anything, but is hacking a save function into Mario 3 that hard? it only needs to keep track of 3 major variables.

>What world is Mario in?
>Did he beat the mid-castle? If so, the lock disappears, providing a shortcut.
>What items does he have in his arsenal?

Lives/score/coins/current powerup can be reset every time, since they're pretty redundant. What's the point in saving lives when you can reload the save file? What's the point in farming coints for lives, when you can again reload your file? What's the point of saving your score? Saving your current powerup is redundant because you have your previously saved items.

It's just me, though. I wish I was a 6502 autist, so that I could do this myself.

With Sonya, it's easy, with Scourge, you'll have to try several time to figure out how to do it.

But seriously, that hack's botched. Several levels are just redraw original level (like Scrap Brain Zone 3, which is in fact the original Scrap Brain Zone 1).

Most Pokemon romhacks are bullshit because they feature the hackers ORIGINUL creations in a brand new, badly designed region for you to explore.

There is Version Naranja though. Based on the Orange island episodes from the anime, you get a lot of game breaking things early on like a Lapras with usable surf before the first gym. The Spanish dialogue is great too.

I went on a romhack spree about a year ago, but it was mostly LTTP hacks and Super Metroid hacks.

Ice Metal was kind of fun, although I got stuck. I got stuck of Metroid Redesign. I got lost in Phazon. Super Mission didn't appeal to me since I've played through Zero Mission a billion times.

On the Zelda front, I tried Goddess of Wisdom but the final dungeon had this really annoying puzzle that I didn't care to do. Parallel Worlds, I got lost.

Just heard of this now. Looks pretty impressive. Shame it may as well never come out, or if it does, it won't work on native hardware without making a proprietary mapper.

Also, not technically a hack, but apparently people have been able to rip the NES ROM from Retro City Rampage, and someone even stated there was plenty of stuff left in the game that was unused. Since it uses an MMC5 as a mapper, it's CHR and PRG limits are both 8 MegaBit, but the game uses 2 and 4, respectively. I wonder if it's legally possible for one to hack RCR and make it into more of a complete game. Hell, if they could hack RCR's title screen in, it would be fuckawesome. Programming wise, it should be possible, but everyone on RHDN is too busy making title screen hacks. It's all up to Brian/VBlank.

Does anyone know of any somewhat easy to follow ASM tutorials?
I don't care too much which subtype of ASM because I figure if I learn one enough, the others shouldn't be too hard to adapt to.

Also, does anyone know of any Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald ROM/RAM maps?
I tried to look via google and couldn't find anything.

I want to make to turn a GBA pokemon into a near-typical RPG game(Why? Because I can, that's why, even if it's very impractical).
For example, when you start a battle, I want to skip the 'pokeball thrown' animation. Same for trainers, I want them to skip throwing the pokeball.
I also want to make it so you can only have one 'pokemon' in your team at a time, the other slots will be used for other party members.
Also when you are done attacking, you flip to the next 'person' to choose what they do to attack as well.
Of course, this is just 'the tip of the iceburg'. I would rewrite alot of things once I understood how.

ROM and or RAM maps would help a ton though. RAM moreso.
I do already have some programming knowledge so I wouldn't be going into this 'completely' blind.

Again, why would I want to do this? Because part of the fun of Rom Hacking is doing shit you're not supposed to.

What do you guys think of this romhack (before opening it take a few deep breaths and actually read the whole thing before sprouting shit that goes in /v/):

http://videogamesoftheoppressed.wordpress.com/2013/04/11/final-fantasy-vi-recast-a-video-games-of-the-oppressed-exclusive-romhack/

It's a very simple hack. Basically, it just switches around the sprites of the entire cast of Final Fantasy VI. Terra is now Gau, Shadow is now Cyan, Edgar is Celes, etc. Note that not all characters have been gender switched.

It's sort of an evolution of those Mario-Peach switch romhacks that have become popular recently and instead explores how differently we perceive characters by their appearance. There are no changes to the gameplay and the script changes are limited to using correctly gendered pronouns. It is purely cosmetic. Not enough to warrant a whole playthrough perhaps but I'm up to where you meet Sabin (now Relm!) and it's interesting so far.

I'll have to take a look at the rom, I thought it was working last time I ran it.

Yep, plus bugfixes regarding palettes in cutscenes and other minor autismal shit. It's less a hack and more a definitive version of the game. I love how most of the changes are toggleable in the main menu though.

We already have a site that painstakingly catalogues romhacks guys

no portugese RPG translation or embarassingly pointless SMB1 remix left behind

Only downside is that they only have IPS patches, what could be cool is to make some sort of userscript that can add in pre-patched download links.

I think it's been mentioned before, but a lot of those were written for how a specific emulator handled sound, which turns out to be completely wrong and thus it fails on every other emulator.

Ah... Thanks. I'm playing them on an original SNES, and still get the sound problems. Super annoying. But I haven't a clue how to fix it...

I fix that by just download those No-Intro sets, sure it takes up HDD space having all those, but least this way I have access to them all whenever I may need them. Same with if a friend would need one.

ZSNES emulation. Many SMW hacks (early ones) were written for ZSNES, whose inaccuracies with the sound emulation for SMW led to new exploits in sound. Basically the ZSNES emulator enabled features that the actual console could not, and thus modders used them to create new additions. The problem here now is that we have better and more accurate emulators, but because those hacks were made with ZSNES, they maintain inaccuracies which cannot be emulated by a proper SNES emulator, and thus can only be 'properly' played on ZSNES.

Apparently a guy is working on a ZSNES emulator now due to problems which apparently exist with running ZSNES anymore, I guess it's archaic and has issues but I've never run into them.

The hack uses the Zelda Debug ROM, so choosing file 1 will take you to all the debug stuff, you need to make a file on slots 2 or 3.

I should add a notice/readme text file to that archive, forgot to when I initially uploaded it.

Could anyone update the new campaign roms in the mega folder like Super Zero Mission with improvement hacks such as Control Freak?
