So uh, what are you guys gonna do in 10-20 years when all the PCBs in your old ass cartidges and all the components in your old systems die? One day all of these retro games and systems will be gone and you will be forced to buy repros.

I just tried my buddy's sumosys, and I was quite impressed. probably $10,000 of secondary market value in that little device.
I'm currently in the market for a copy of Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen for SNES. At least $200.
sumosys is less than that and includes that game. it's already paid for itself.

small scale manufacturing capabilities have caught up to enable amateurs to build hardware specification compliant systems (ie, an FPGA will not reproduce, say, bus noise errors from faultily design, but will perform as the manual says it's intended behavior is)
> fat FPGAs = perfect copy of any chip set
> easy to make custom PCB = motherboards, carts, and controllers
> easy to 3D print or get custom vacuum form molding = console, cart, and controller housings
> high quality printers = boxes, manuals, and cart labels
who cares if old stuff dissolves, we can just make more at this point as hobbyists

FPGA replacements for proprietary chips, everything else is replaceable with a modern part. If SNES CPU failures suddenly explode, you might see someone bother to come up with a kit for a FPGA replacement and adapter socket. It's not viable yet, since SNES consoles have gone back below $50 for a working unit.

Unless you're storing things in a swamp, the only "pressing" concerns are carts with on board batteries. And they're as likely to just dry up as they are to cause any damage. People act like every cap is gonna go Hiroshima on them. They're not all as bad as the xbox's clock cap. And even those are hilariously over stated considering how many still have to get pulled out by flippers.

What are you going to do in 10 years when you're finally old enough to post here? I have consoles older than you. I have CDs older than you. Hell, I probably have consoles older than your parents. protip: if you dispute that last part you're admitting to being literally retarded instead of underage so weigh your options before LARPing.

I don't even use my physical stuff now because it's easier to just take out a laptop and emulate than it is to dig out old shit and hook it up with RF quality video when I could have crisp pixels and use any controller I want and not be limited to old controllers that my hands can't go back to now.

You just pulled 10-20 years from your ASS HOLE, you fucking scumbag. Disc rot will happen in 0-20 years, not PCBS - and you obviously don't even have a clue what a PCB is.

About quarter of a century ago my mom asked the girl at the store how long the cartridges would last and she said the games last forever. She was proven right - well, depending on how autistic you want to be about "forever". There is no physical or chemical reason why they would disintegrate at any rate that will be significant in our lifetime. They will quite literally outlive us all.

Electrical components face wear and tear from electrons, especially components that face wide swings on power. Most home game consoles are made with moderately cheap components, but are also built to resist the antics of "dumb fucking kids". There's really no way to know how long those cheap ICs will hold out. Such finely manufactured components are always prone toward damage. Powering them on and off a lot will of course greatly cut down lifespan.

Don't assume your consoles will survive. Have an extra one of each in case one dies. And that should easily cover you, as long as you can also replace caps(which can chemically fail).

The snes specifically has a shitty processor that tends to die.

Almost everything else either doesnt go bad or can be trivially replaced. People fix 60 70 80 year old electronics all the time.

Atari 2600, NES, SNES and GameBoy have been emulated to essential perfection. Outside of edge cases, GBA, SEGA Master System and Genesis are perfect as well. PS1 and DS are mostly solid. PS2, Gamecube, Wii and N64 have flaws but are always getting better. I don't see the problem.

In fact IC failures in SHVC SNESes seem unnervingly frequent. But you can avoid it by purchasing a later model; the design of the case will give away what PCB revision it is.

The romhacks for NES games that change the mappers from CNROM, or MMCx to a greater number MMCx, do they perform faster overall, or what is the desired result of these hacks?
