Is this series supposed to be scary? The controls are more frustrating than the horror stings are frightening.

>> No.5891547 [DELETED]

Track controls paired with carefully chosen static camera angles are intentional to carry a claustrophobic sensation and the audio stings are more effective if you don't have your airpods in your ears you fucking zoomer.

Literally the only bad thing about the controls is that there's no quickturn, and you don't even need it for this game.
It's still not scary, though. The only times RE scared me was with the Lickers and Mr. X in 2.

Not retro but playing Resident Evil 4 with my brother for the first time with lights off at night when I was 10 years old was legit the scariest gaming experience that I ever had, I still can remember like if it was yesterday.
And before someone calls me underage, reminder that RE4 came out in 2005, I'm 24 now.

So people coming to Re1 today see a bad shooting game with odd controls. That's taking it the wrong way. You need to see it as someone in 1996 would have.

It's like a point n' click adventure game but this time it's in 3D graphics and highly detailed 2D backgrounds. Graphics this good were mind blowing. And it enhances and pushes the Adventure genre to new levels. RE1 even has several traps that kill you. As the Re series goes on, they get more polished, but alos up the action and downplay the adventure. RE3 is very action heavy. Re4 abandons 95% of the adventure (only keeping a few puzzels) and turns it into a full shooter.

And they're not scary I always consider them comfy big puzzle games in a comphy cool mansion.

Wrong.
This is everything that's wrong with "retro gamers", ledditors, and hipsters. Romanticizing old things to the point where you claim technical limitations were artistic choices.
The developers would have loved to have been able to implement a freely controllable camera, but that would have required having 3D rendered environments instead of prerendered backgrounds, a more demanding effort for both programming development and console performance.
You wish you were a real boomer, you namefagging IRL loser.

Technical limitations led to great things. We have Evil Within without those limitations and it isn't as good as these games. Simple. I personally prefer the controls, camera etc... But that's just me and I'm the one playing the games, so I DGAF other people can like what they want. In any case RE1-4 are by far the most favored.

It's still an artistic choice. What they choose to do with the limits of the hardware to make their game is all artistic choice. You wouldn't say the Mona Lisa isn't a beautiful work of art just because Leonardo Da Vinci was forced to use the oil paint of his day rather than modern acrylic paint or digital art software. When you have to creatively use what is available, you often end up with something more interesting and charming than if the technology did all the work.

Code Veronica also deliberately chose fixed camera angles over a freely controllable camera even though they rendered everything in full 3D. That anon has no idea what they're talking about.

Didn't get into the series until CV on the Dreamcast. Then played REmake (but we're not supposed to talk about that yet...cuck) Played 2 and 3, 3 definitely was tense due to Nemesis, but 2 is a meme imo. I've never played the original, but does not look scary at all, at least now.

Why do people suck so much at tank controls?

>> No.5896603

>Tank controls

Tank Controls refers to the character's inability to strafe, as well as his inability to turn quickly or to go backwards quickly.

You know. Like a fucking tank.

What you guys are talking about isn't tank controls, it's character centric controls; which is the contrary of camera centric controls, which was more common at the time.

In short, you can keep shouting "I'm smarter than people who can't into tank controls!!" but you're still dumb for you have no idea what you're talking about.

I know this thread is /vr/ bait, but I have never understood people who bitch about tank controls. If its not your thing fair enough... but the controls aren't bad and work fine in 2019 Resident Evil Deadly Silence is still the best version today IMO, and holds up extremely well

The technique of using 3D models within fixed camera 2D pre-rendered backgrounds came first.

It was created by Frédérick Raynal for Alone In The Dark 1992.

He realized that camera centric controls would be too confusing due to the every changing camera angles so he chose to stick to character centric controls.

Finally, full 3D environments were of course possible; and even then they'd stick to that type of controls, see Overblood 1996 which was developped at the very same time as Resident Evil and which, like RE, was heavily inspired by AITD.
