Let's discuss tone and atmosphere.
Mother 1 feels like a classic 80s comic of age adventure movie, it's no secret that movies like The Goonies or Stand By Me were influential for Itoi's vision and I think the first game captures that same feeling of kids going through really dangerous places and situations, in a way Mother 1 feels the most realistic, while still having its magic or cartoonish moments.
Mother 2 is the 90s sequel and it shows. It's very "Nickelodeon" in terms of aesthetics, can't help but get reminded of stuff like Rocko's Modern Life or Ren and Stimpy with Mother 2's art style and even music, as opposed to Mother 1 which made me think more of 50s and 60s cartoons, like Peanuts or even Iron Man 28.
Mother 3 deviates a lot, it started as a 3D game for N64 and had a really unique aesthetic, in a way it reminds me of european classic comics, stuff like Lucky Luke or Asterix, I get that sort of vibe from the 3D character models and general aesthetic of what we could see of that version of the game.
With the GBA release of it, they just went back to the classic Mother 2 spritework in 2D.
Mother 3 is inspired more directly by literature than its predecessor titles, which were more inspired by movies, and it shows in the narrative and structure of the game. The actual book this game was inspired by was The Notebook, the first in the Claus and Lucas trilogy of novels by Agota Kristof. Itoi mentioned he actually tamed the plot a lot for the GBA game compared to the N64 original. Mother 3 still has its dark moments, but it doesn't come close to the levels of darkness in the Kristof novel.
However I also think Mother 3 has elements of classic 19th century novels, such as Heidi (the girl of the alps), which also reminds me of the anime Heidi, directed by Hayao Miyazaki. I've seen many people say Mother 3 has a Ghibli feel and I guess it does, in a way.
What's your take on each game? Do you agree with me?

I still don't think MOTHER 3 is /vr/, but I appreciate you trying to start a MOTHER thread regardless. I think you described the games very well and I mostly agree with your assessment of each one, particularly your take on MOTHER 2. Glad I'm not the only one who got Rocko's Modern Life vibes while playing EarthBound.

Ultimately, the first game is and will always be my favorite for its mix of dark undertones meets comfy 80s kids' adventure movie feel. Ninten and Ana forever!

Ah, you're right, but at least it started as a /vr/ game, which is why I talked about the unreleased N64 version.
I'd be hard pressed to pick a favorite, I like all 3 for different reasons, with 3 being the objective "best" IMO in terms of sheer gameplay and QoL, but I also have a very soft spot for Mother 1 and think it's very underrated or misunderstood, especially when people try to dismiss it as "proto-earthbound". I get what they mean by that, since many ideas were reused in Mother 2, but Mother 1 is unique in a lot of ways and deserves its own place in the trilogy.

No, that's a solo Dixie cup with the Jazz pattern (unofficially known as the Solo Jazz) on it, designed by Gina Ekiss in the late 80s or 90s before 1992. Produced by the Sweetheart Cup company, cups hit the shelves in the late 1992. The pattern became an instant success.

why does earthbound have so much superfluous stuff in it? snakes, seasonings even some weapons.

Just extra flavor for the world. Even if you never use the snakes or seasonings, it's the idea that they're there for you to use anyway that's fun. I mean there quickly comes a point where you'd almost never need to eat a pizza, but still *you can order pizza in the game*! It's all those little touches that make EarthBound feel so quirky, so whimsical, so... "EarthBound".
