That is a better basis for a thread.

>one year for birthday, grandparents got me Fire N Ice for the NES
>the hell is this
>simple puzzle game, kinda cool I guess
>play it anyways since there for the week
>beat it on the second day
Thank god for the puzzles the game drops after you beat it, grandparents looked pretty nervous when I got the ending on the second day. Ended up selling it to Funcoland for store credit, probably bought SNES games with the money.

I think my relative found this in the bargain bin at Kohl's ... but it turned out to be tons of fun and I put a lot of hours into it.
I never played f-zero or wipeout so I don't know how it compares.

I remember that was summer after my first high school year, got really good grades and I was enjoying the summer with friends, there was the town festival (I'm not american btw) and various shops were selling their stuff until midnight, with fireworks all over the sea, my parents came home telling me that they stopped over the computer guy stand (I knew him) and he told them I would love this game, I was expecting something in the vein of Lee Cavallo's Putting challenge and they showed me this, my mom tought it was too violent and my dad told her "yeah, that's the point".
I miss them

I remember renting Mario is Missing as a kid and thinking "what the fuck is this." Might have even returned it for another game because I couldn't figure out what to do and it conveyed no semblance of ever being fun.

I played edutainment games as a kid and had no problem playing something like Mario Teaches Typing, but renting a Mario title for a videogame console and having it be some sort of weird shit with a ringing phone and no clear action in sight threw me for a loop. They should've named them something like Luigi's Geography Lesson and Mario's History Lesson.

Games I never asked for?

6-Pak on the Genesis
I played the fucking shit out of it, even Columns and Super Hang-on. Loved 6-Pak.

Aladdin for SNES
I liked it and still do.

Batman Forever for SNES
Even back then I knew it was fucking bad, I didn't like it at all.

Resident Evil Gaiden for GBC.
Honestly didn't like it, I even gave it multiple chances just to play through and beat it, but never made it far before I'd drop it. I'm sure it has its fans but I don't like it at all.

Evil Dead: Hail to the King for PSX
I loved the Evil Dead movies so of course I loved it.

Doom 64
I loved it.

Jazz Jackrabbit for PC
Loved it.

Jazz Jackrabbit 2 for PC
Loved it.

I guess I was really lucky when it came to getting games I didn't ask for.

One of my first memories (not just of games, but one of my earliest memories in general) is opening up the Christmas present my grandparents gave me when I was 5 or 6. They got my Kirby's Adventure for NES, and the box looked so cute and cool, and I was not disappointed when I put the game in.
