Where do you guys buy your old games from? Literally every yardsale and thrift shop doesn't have any videogames, and if they do they're either crap, or they're charging $20-40 per game. Why can't I find anything decent for $10 anymore?

Is eBay really the only place I can buy old games now? I havent found anything videogames in a thrift store in months now and the last thing I bought was a PS2 with Katamari Damacy.

Ebay. The problem with yard sales, flea markets, pawn shops, etc is that their stock is inherently going to be limited. You're probably not going to find any video game stuff at all, and if you do find something, its just going to be a bunch of sportsball madden garbage. Or you have those used game stores that have everything even more expensive than ebay, a more limited stock, and none of ebay's convenience. Same goes for craiglist where its just going to be scumbags trying to get double ebay prices

Get a time machine and go back to 2008 when no one gave a shit about collecting.

But serious, I got into collecting around 2009 and back then the getting was excellent since few people had smart phones, there weren't a ton of collectors, and there were even less resellers. I used to fill up a backpack and have to go empty it in my car and go back for more at my local flea market around that time. I used to score games like Earthbound, Chrono Trigger, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and Tron Bonne for under $5 each all day long. It wasn't until around 2013 or so that these deals really started to dry up because everyone got in on collecting retro games around that time. There was a store I used to go to that had a ton of retro games and they were priced at $3 each regardless of title. Buy 2014 almost all the employees were either resellers or collectings and sniped everything that came in. By 2016 looking for cheap games in the wild was nearly pointless and you'd find a cheap Ocarina of Time or Mega Man X if you were lucky. Luckily I grabbed 90% of everything I ever wanted when the gettin was really good. Now what I'm missing I just pick up on ebay from time to time.

eBay since I live in middle of nowhere America, I only collect for Japanese MegaDrive currently, I used to collect for PS1&2 and Dreamcast but I am done collecting for those systems as I own all the games I wanted.

My Dreamcast games are 90% games I just kept from back in the day, I only missed out on a few I wanted but I just bought them after SEGA closed shop on the Dreamcast and store were almost giving them and the games away.

Most of my PS2 collection I picked up a few years ago, most PS2 games are still cheap, only a few weird kind of obscure ones go for a lot. You can still find brand new sealed PS2 games for popular titles. Often still going for $19.99

PS1 has been going up in recent years which is strange because PS1 was always the dirt cheap to collect for system. Half of my collection is from back in the day, the other half I got during the X360/PS3 years when nobody gave a shit about PS1 so even the really good stuff was cheap as hell.

Thrift stores, goodwills, and yard sales are useless where I live.

>thrift stores
in my area rarely sells any video games at all, if there are any it’s always Wii Sports or a Just Dance for Wii, here thrift stores are just old lady clothes and old people knickknacks

here only have X360 sports games, sometimes PS2 sports games

always Hot Wheels and Barbie PC-CD ROM games and other random shovelware, also usually cereal box ware

This. Gen 7 is the sweet spot right now. It's just old enough that nobody wants them anymore, but not old enough that there's a supply shortage. I grab up consoles for 10 bucks all the time. This happens with every gen. A few years ago, it was PS2 games and consoles that were fuck cheap, but they're slowly starting to climb back up. Hell, back in 2005-ish, most Gamestops had racks of N64s for 10 bucks each because they just didn't want the damn things anymore.

The window on anything older than that is long closed.

>> No.5881338

This. I think I'm going to start searching around for PS3 games I might want to pick up. I have a PS3 but I've honestly never bought any games beyond the packed-in copy of uncharted 2, since I bought it to jailbreak it.

However, the caveat I have to buying phyiscal copies of stuff ~7th gen onward is that this is when the build quality of phyisical releases really went to shit. It's when games essentially stopped coming with true manuals, maybe instead giving you a slip of paper with some gov't-mandated warnings and a control layout sheet. It's also when they started cheapening out on the disc cases, using thinner and thinner plastic, and then also cutting giant holes in the plastic to pinch even more pennies. The end result is that a lot of stuff comes in god awful cases and I don't want any of that shit. This is especially a problem with 360 games from what I remember.

>> No.5881491

>>5881329
ah yes time to hoard soulless 360 and ps3 games. It's the final generation I personally had real interest in but looking back it was a forgettable generation. As hardware focuses on easy porting and more directly competing with PC specs, collecting anything close to current generation is pointless

I'm not saying you will never encounter a (rather) good deal with retro games but you're going to need a LOT of patience and time so if you still wish to buy games like in your pic in the year of our lord twenty nineteen your best bet will be from online or event sellers.

As someone who's been collecting since 2010 (which was already really late compared to say the late 90s or till 2003 or so) I feel it's not really worth it to collect and play nintendo games except N64 ones because all of them have become double, triple or even 4 times the asking price they used to be almost 10 years ago and I'm afraid that's not going to improve. Playstation or megadrive might still be interesting but that's not going to last long anymore. While not my favorite way of playing them, you're so much cheaper off if you just say fuck it and just emulate games on whatever you feel like. You don't seem to want to pay too much so I'm sure that's the better option for you.

Yeah pensions I don't know but those people are making those nostalgia buys earlier than, say, the baby boomers. The baby boomers didn't start re-buying model trains and toys until they were in their 50s or 60s but the SNES/Genesis people are in the market again right now.

I'd say that SNES/Genesis market has at least ten years left in it before the bottom falls out again. They'll never be as cheap as Atari games, but they'll eventually deflate.
