Genuine yes. Forget about UT. Unreal 1 was clearly a demo for the engine, but has really great levels weapons, and like I said last thread its sort of a midi opera fps, the music really pulls you along.

Unreal 1 is an atmospheric journey across an alien world, with unique mix of medieval, arcane and alien-high-tech environments.
It is absultely fantastic in the first half, but the latter third runs out of steam if you play whole game at once.

Anyway, the principles of both work against each other, as you can see in STRAFE which turn out awful. The agressive playstyle demonstrated in the trailers would lead to your death due to roguelite mechanics.
They just don't mix.
The closest thing is Ziggurat or Undead Redneck but those arent very oldschool.

Roguelite is what everyone calls it as a compromise, because roguelike it is definitely not.
There's a strict definition of what is a roguelike and what is not. Main statements of that definition is : a) turn based, b) on a grid, c) permadeath.
The only thing that has in common with roguelites is level generation and that's it, especially since most of such games allow some sort of meta-progression between that essentially allows one to grind their way up the challenge, which goes against everything actual roguelikes stand for.
Therefore separate definitions.

There's some. I think that procedural generation is really, REALLY difficult to apply to a first person shooter, and have it come out well.

For an example of just how *atrocious* this can get, check out Shadow Warrior 2, it's like there's only five or six actual levels in the entire game, and it's made worse by the gameplay being dumbed down by several magnitudes.

The more I play FPS with procgen, the more I get convinced they're not meant for each other. I'm welcome to see someone prove me wrong though.

Is there any interest in the Doom community to scan and preserve Doom related magazines, mooks, strategy guides, etc?

I checked and basically nothing is scanned.

Obhack and Obaddon can get quite good results if you configure them right. They also havve fuckton of prefabs and ways to actually procedurally generate parts of the landscape for real, that modern games can't have due to them not being BSP.

Warframe uses procedural for the maps, it cobbles stuff from prefabs but you can barely notice they are procedural, and through the years the generated levels became quite good IMO, makes grinding more interesting.

You pretty damn well can.
Especially when the game decides to string 3 identical rooms together in exact same way. There's absolutely no variation in the looks of the rooms with same geometry, so rooms with identical layouts will look exactly the same, and there aren't that many layouts to go around.

When design council actually mattered anything I was pushing for the idea of inside-room variantions for the decorations, that would make rooms not to look so much alike, but apparently that "required to much effort that'd be better put elsewhere".
In the end, the repetitive samy environments tayed, even with addition of new tilesets, that part of the game hasn't improved much.

Even stuff like Immortal Redneck has more variation n its rooms.

For the record - I play WF on and off since it was released, and have 4k+ hours total. It is fun to play in short bursts, but gets boring rather quickly, especially during content draught or when DE introduces way too much grind (like 2% drop from monster that spawns 3% of the time)

I got that one a dozen times. It was exciting the first time, surprising the second time, and then I eventually got it many more times and then it was boring.

For me, whenever it used a level chunk (imagine something the size of a few city blocks which are randomly angled together) it had used before, like a city level, everything would be on the same spot, ever street and alley, every house, every chest would be where it always was, every enemy spawn point would be the same, and that's not going into how every time there was a fuckup in the level generation, such as a chest stuck in a wall and being unreachable, or a broken invisible boundary cutting right through the edge of the map, with enemies stuck on the other side, and if you managed to climb over you were stuck and fucked.
These errors always came up again and again, they weren't a glitch in the procedural generation, it was errors in how the chunks were made in the first place, and since there's only a few of those chunks, it would repeatedly place those over and over, and repeatedly put in the same errors over and over.

Do you mean the felt-on-steps in general or a particular set? Both examples in the screen match, though I can see the merit in changing the bottom-most flat next to the COMP towers and felt tiles. I'm satisfied with the red-metal combo, same with the teleporter since there's a theme of demons fucking up UAC warps and trying to hack on their own.

I'm finishing up RC1 for a release in several hours, so you'll have the chance to look at more of the map later.

Play Quake on Medium, then play it again on Hard and marvel at how it's even more fun, after you've beat Quake on Hard (which isn't actually too difficult), you should be ready for for the rest.
Then play Dissolution Of Eternity and Scourge Of Armagon (either order), these change up the gameplay some, and raise the stakes some, do them on Medium and you're good.

Then try out Dimensions Of The Past, and finally Arcane Dimensions.
Remember that Shamblers take half damage from explosives, shotguns will not give you overpenetration like in Doom, the base shotgun is actually your pistol tier weapon (and it's actually pretty good as such), and when you find a Quad Damage, haul ass and go look for things to kill.

Make sure you get the music as well.

In Q1 it's also possible to switch difficulty mid-game between episodes, just take the teleport behind your back in the episode selection room in the hub map.
Medium is comparatively boring, Hard is cooler but you need to be already a bit used to the game mechanics first. Stay away from Nightmare for the first playthrough.

Differences between Halo and Doom:
1. Doom has Quicksaving, Halo has Checkpoints.
2. In Halo, you drop all your weapons and ammo on the ground if you die. In Doom, you don't, they just vanish.

In Doom Single Player you have to go back to a save when you die. In Doom Co-op you don't; you just respawn. The penalty is (optionally) losing your weapons and ammo. This sucks for two reasons
1. When the game winds your progress back, you have to change your strategy and get good in order to overcome and not have the same thing happen again. If you just respawn into the game with your progress at the same point where you died, there's no incentive to get good, and a death trap or enemy placement isn't the same obstacle it would have been.In Co-op play this means no one needs to communicate, cooperate, or plan or be careful because there is nothing at risk.
2. If you come back with your gear, there's even LESS penalty to dying and no need to be careful or try not to die or cooperate with your friends.
But if you DON'T come back with your gear, that gear is erased from the map. Meaning there is now less ammunition than the developers intended for the fights. This COULD lead to an exciting situation where you have to carefully traverse the map with limited items, except it DOESN'T, because if you die, you just respawn again. Meaning you are just end up attacking the enemy with waves of yourself with the pistol. And then you go and grab more guns, and lose those too and the cycle repeats until you're just stuck in a situation where you're clearly underpowered but it doesn't matter because you can just throw yourself at the situation until the enemies run out.

So in conclusion, Doom's co-op does not encourage cooperation, strategy, or care.
Add onto this the fact that you can move at 1000 miles an hour and co-op matches end up kind of being a shit show.

So one quick fix to Doom's co-op would be enabling the host to load a quicksave that everyone loads. (This would mean everyone makes a quicksave when the host does and loads that quicksave when the host loads his)
This way the host would control when to savescum. Just like in one player runs.
And when one player dies, have everyone load that save, or the level start (with their guns, don't wanna piss people off TOO much) if there is no save.

Are you looking for just how to get into it or like, the "optimal" playstyle or something? For the former, I'd say just dive into E1 on HMP. Play the last stable release, not the current master version because bullets are undergoing a major rewrite so damage is all kinds of fucked up.

As far as playstyle goes, "best" would be really hard to define, but speaking as the person who beat Valiant, Going Down, and Alien Vendetta, some things my loadouts always carry are at least one boss killer, one berserk pack, armor, and a medikit. I'd say those are the things you should never leave home without, no matter what else you want to use.
