>I might have mentioned the following in the interview, not sure and I didn't watch it, but it bears repeating. I was on a panel (at GDC many years ago) on role-playing games along with Sandy Petersen (Chaosium, Microprose, id Software, Ensemble) and he said something very interesting, that "the best computer role-playing game you'll ever play is about as good as the worst pen-and-paper RPG session." The reverse of that was the definition of what Daggerfall aimed to accomplish, well, maybe not quite that extreme, but at least bring the two to an even plane.

>With that in mind, I think that Daggerfall moved well along in trying to achieve that goal, but still fell well short of getting there. As a stepping stone on that path, however, it showed that that goal is achievable and, frankly, I'm surprised that no one has tried moving the bar in all the years that have passed. So many things that could be done with proper knowledge of various techniques, unknown to me at that time, now so familiar: finite automata, CFG, machine learning, feature detection, and many many others. Obviously, I haven't played any games that try to accomplish what Daggerfall did. They might be out there but I don't know of any. That being said, I have played some truly excellent CRPGs, my favorite being Witcher III, which was a fantastic game.

I liked it a lot at the time and still find it charming. The main problem has always been that the modular dungeon sections become highly repetitive over time. In general a little more story in the sandbox would've been nice.

I still consider it one of the 'comfiest' games ever made though. I'm keeping an eye on the unity project because there are a few simple mods (use of slightly higher res sprites that were included with the game but not used, persistent dungeon states, birds) that add nice details without ruining the vanilla experience.

Dungeons get very messy and samey, and the fact that they're randomly made (except main quest dungeons) means that finding quest items becomes more of a matter of luck, as there's no obvious "this is the end of the dungeon, here's the item you need"
Also the only way to find dungeons is either through random quests or wandering the absolutely barren overworld. Some mods are trying to make overworld travel a little more interesting but I haven't tried any.
I still like it though, even if it's a bit frustrating to actually play

>> No.5870647

>>5870584
That's not how it works. The quest item locations will always be in the same location. What they did was design each block by hand, adding things like teleporters, secret walls, etc, then added connection points so that they could be pieced together.

>> No.5870650

>>5870584
>and the fact that they're randomly made (except main quest dungeons) means that finding quest items becomes more of a matter of luck
Once you've played enough dungeons you start noticing that dungeons follow a set number of patterns. This is good and bad, on the good side you can indeed eventually learn where the quest items spawn and in some of them they're even placed at the end of some obvious challenge or puzzle, like the rooms underneath the hollow pyramid or the red brick loop with the trap door.

The bad side of course is that this means they get even more repetitive than if they were truly randomly generated as in a roguelike. Rather than random maze of rooms and hallways DF dungeons are more like a handful (at most) of random sub-dungeons plopped next to each other edge-to-edge, and once you are familiar with those dungeons you know all the "random" dungeons in the game more or less.

Block W-18 right? It's used in 127 dungeons across 31 (of 44) regions including 8 in Daggerfall, 1 in Sentinel, and 7 in Wayrest so you are likely to run into it once or twice in a playthrough unless you skip most dungeon quests. Though even when you end up in one of the broken dungeons there's still a chance your quest item spawns in the accessible part so it might not break your quest every time.
So yeah you'll probably run into broken quests more often than broken dungeons. But the fact that you can run into either is disheartening and discourages rigorous play when you can't even be sure that it's possible to succeed.

Speaking of the broken quests, for anyone looking to get into the game: make sure you grab the DaggerfallSetup installer just like you would have before DFU came around. Then point DFU to that install. You want all the quest fixes it includes since there were still a lot of bugged quests even in the fully patched version of the vanilla game. If you just install regular ol' Daggerfall from Bethesda or GOG or whatever you won't have the fixes even if you're using DFU.

(1) AMD chips aren't made in China.
(2) It's clear that our information is being captured. It isn't clear that it's actively monitored. It also isn't clear how to avoid it, short of not having a cell phone and not using the Internet, and staying away from modern devices. What can we do?

I use open source stuff when available, keep amazon echo/google home/apple home/etc out of my house, host my own files locally, and encrypt my traffic as a default, but at a certain point we also just need to live our lives.

At some point maybe I'll be able to afford a plot of land in some out of the way place where I can build a cabin and live off-grid, but until then, what do I do beyond what I'm doing? And even when I do get there, I'm still going to want to use the Internet.

The NSA already won. Unless something takes out their massive data collection facilities in utah which are all more secure than nuclear powerplants, I don't know that anything will ever change.

I haven't checked up on this in a long time. Does it fix the bugs and what not of the original game? What mods are best for balance etc?

>> No.5883624

>>5861856
I spent the day playing the basic DaggerfallSetup + Daggerfall Unity with all the fixes/community patches enabled.

I like it. I do understand why some people wouldn't dig this. The smallest town in ES:II Daggerfall is larger than the largest city in ES:V Skyrim. But of course, most towns seem the same. There are only so many character models. Only so much dialogue.

But I don't know. The world of Skyrim felt so small to me. They say that in game Skyrim translates to 14 square miles. Daggerfall is 62,324 square miles.

So there's this problem where Skyrim is too small. But Daggerfall is too big and samey. I don't know what would be a good balance.

I'm really enjoying Unity Daggerfall though. I might have to turn on the "mouse click to attack" setting though... Having to swoosh my mouse around is very cumbersome and I can't seem to get good at it...

It took me a few hours just to get past the first dungeon. The game manual specifically states that it wishes you wouldn't save every 5 seconds because some of the magic of the game is lost. How could you NOT save every 5 seconds in this game? I have to save after every single monster fight in this game. It's so easy to die. My guy has already died a hundred times probably.

The dungeons are gigantic. Claustrophobic. I get worried I won't be able to find my way out. The 3D map helps a lot but it can be a bit cumbersome to use.

Overall I'm very glad I checked this out. I'm really liking it and I think Unity breathes life back into this game.

Something I'm confused by.

Did Dagerfall originally have rolling hills and stuff like that? Or is that a Unity addition? In original Daggerfall was the entirety of the map flat?

>> No.5883697

>>5883694
Rolling hills is a Unity addition. Vanilla Daggerfall was pretty flat, but it wasn't totally so; the terrain did vary in height according to a global heightmap and a noise filter, but it was much more subtle than how Unity does it and didn't look so good with high view distances.
There were some fun anomalies in vanilla though if you go looking for them like there's a big gash on the far east side of the Wrothgarian Mountains and a "mountain" (sudden steep incline in elevation) in... I forget the exact location but think it was somewhere between Tigonus and Sentinel.

My issue was I didn't know how the character creation worked and how the game is balanced.

I didn't realize you HAVE to start the game with a weapon you are proficient with.

So I'd start out with the sword you get in the beginning, but I wasn't proficient with it, couldn't hit anything, died.

Eventually I realized that you can use those 15 questions they ask you to start out with a good weapon. Finally I started out with a weapon I had expertise in and then it wasn't too bad. I still died a lot though.

I mean jesus. Those little flying gargoyle goblin things can one shot you with their fireball.

>Maybe save every 30 minutes?

I would be replaying the same 30 minutes over and over again. Sometimes I'm fighting skeletons and I don't even get hit. Other times I can't hit the skeleton at all and they kill me in 3 hits. Game is brutal.

Some of the interesting advantages/disadvantages aren't well explained.

I was playing an Argonian. I figured giving him the ability to regenerate health in light would make sense for a lizard. But what counts as light? Do they mean SUNLIGHT? Cause it didn't work in lit rooms. Would "regenerate health in darkness" work inside buildings, even though there's artificial light? Does "regenerate health in light" only work in sunlight, and "regenerate health in darkness" only work in pitch blackness?

>> No.5884623

>>5884553
Yes, they meant sunlight while darkness will pretty much apply to all dungeons as far as I know. You can apply this to enchantments as well to make specific dungeon crawling gear with major bonuses that disintegrate when worn outside. The UESP wiki should help you out just keep in mind the bugs and exploits were fixed in Unity and dodging no longer decreases your chance to hit.

Light means "outside during day", darkness means everywhere else.
You typically spend 90% of your game time and 99.9% of your combat time in what the game considers "Darkness".
Even the brightest environment in the entire game, that huge lava room with the Blind God in the final dungeon, is in darkness as far as game mechanics go.

Also "in holy places" just means in Temples and it's basically free points for disadvantages and enchanting. Always enchant everything to damage you and deteriorate in holy places if you want to maximize their usefulness. If you're fast you won't even need to unequip them when you enter because it takes a while to start and time is paused in dialogue. The only time you'd ever need to spend more than a few seconds in a Temple is if you're using a trainer in one.

>Yeah but which one feels better? Do they evoke different feelings?
To me the world in Daggerfall feels really magical because it's so real. When I explore in Skyrim I'm so aware that every centimetre of the world has been assembled by a dev team and honestly it doesn't feel realistic at all. Everything is so bunched together and exaggerated. The towns are way too manufactured in appearance and minuscule in size.. The mountains look enormous and pointy but are only like 100-200m high. The whole thing looks and feels like a Bob Ross painting, it's all just too perfect. In Daggerfall the world is barren, hostile, bleak, and the geography feels exactly like the real world, except with centaurs and shit. It feels more realistic that towns are a bunch of normal-looking houses and normal people just living their lives, rather than some exciting drama waiting for you to come along happening round every corner. Especially with the tedious travel mod, traversing the world feels like a real adventure through the genuine unknown - and it is unknown, because the chances are if you go to a random spot in the middle of the wilderness, nobody who has ever played the game, even the devs, have ever been there before.

Having said all that, the reason I stopped playing after a few weeks is just due to the lack of variation in quests and dungeons. Daggerfall is ultimately a dungeon crawler and some mods making the dungeons feel more real and logical, and maybe a bit smaller, wouldn't go amiss.

Guys. I can't do it. The dungeons. Are too. Fucking. Big. And with no rhyme or reason.

I've spent like 5 hours in this dungeon so far. I'm supposed to be ascertain the state of some bitch who may or may not be insane. Where is she? I've killed hundreds of her big titty goon rangers. There are like 50 levers. I've pulled all of them. I don't even know what they do.

This isn't fun for me. I can zoom in on that 3D map all I want. Figuring where I've been, where I need to go, how all these myriad passageways are connected, is mind boggling.

There's so much verticality to this dungeon I feel like I'm playing some levels of Descent coded by a drug addict.

I don't know how you guys can think this fun. It hurts my brain.

And why is half the map see through and ghosty? This makes it even harder to puzzle through the 3D map.

Most of the time there's some easily missable hidden switch deep in the dungeon that reveals a new area that you need to go to. Rarely, the quest generation bugs out and the person is actually unreachable, in some room that is not connected to the dungeon in any way.

Ok, I finally found the old bag. Verified she's still alive. Carefully made my way out of the dungeon. Went back to Daggerfall. Talked to the princess. She gives me a tower shield I can't even use because I specialized in blunt weapons and all blunt weapons seem to be two handed.

WELP. I mean, I think I could get used to the size of the dungeons. I made it through this one. For the most part.

But the thing is, there isn't a huge reason to explore every single room or anything like that. My inventory filled up with valuable shit almost instantly. I started throwing away stuff that was worth 100 gold and less just so I could keep picking up gold and other valuable stuff. Eventually I stopped picking up things all together.

In all of that I got a warhammer that was slightly better than what I had, better chest armor, and a slightly better helmet, plus a butt ton of gold.

Is there anywhere I can store all my books and stuff like that? I've got all these books and I think that's neat so I want to keep them, but they're taking up too much space in my inventory. I know I can buy a house, but can I store shit there? How does that work?

For what it's worth that's actually one of the largest dungeons in the game as it's a main quest dungeon. Most of the random dungeons are a third that size. If you paid close attention to her ramblings you might have learned the secret to bypassing it entirely for later quests involving her.
Don't get me wrong they're still huge and still mostly consist of bland 3D mazes regardless of size (with a few standout modules to be found) but at least know they're not all to that level. Plus even some of the bigger main quest dungeons actually have some cool designs in them that make them more fun to explore despite being larger.

There is a main story. The main quest is delivered piecemeal in the form of letters from the various influences of the Bay.
You'll get a couple quests for the three main kingdoms and once you do them it all starts coming together in the second half.

>Everyone i talk to is hating me.
Did you give yourself 'bad reactions from peasants/commoners' in character creation? That's why everyone hates you. Eventually with enough personality and reputation (from doing lots of random quests) you can counteract that. In the meantime just get used to talking to a bunch of NPCs until you find one willing to give you directions.
There's no speech checks or anything that matter in quests like the later TES games so you won't be missing out on anything just by being disliked; it just takes a little longer to get the information you need.

Yes I posted that because I thought it was funny, not as a criticism of the game. I actually like Daggerfall's dungeons myself but I can see why a lot of people wouldn't, at least the non-main quest ones. It could have used a lot more variety for sure and I am at the point where I have memorized most of the possible layouts for the "random" dungeons, but that took me over 70 hours of playtime and before then I greatly enjoyed the fact that I could actually get truly lost in them and had to come prepared for potentially fatal diseases/poisons and not waste too much time resting so I can complete my quests. They serve their purpose well in that regard.
And when you DO get to the main quest dungeons they've got some really memorable stuff. Loved the cool tricks in Direnni Tower, the Castle Daggerfall treasury room, and especially the entire Mantellan Crux which was such a surreal contrast to the rest of the game. I wish they included a few other dungeons like that in other planes, like for the Daedric quests or something. Battlespire's later levels reminded me a lot of it in overall design and ambiance.
So yeah, I get it, not for everyone, but for someone like me there's nothing that can satisfy that itch quite like Daggerfall.

I'm getting Giants showing up in cities. They are normal sprites just larger. I have the villagers mod and warm ashes installed. Could not see any documentation on giants in cities. Any ideas?

They are really distracting and rub me the wrong way since I main nords.

sounds like the villagers mod, when you have giant sprites usually its a load order issue

D.R.E.A.M mod eats up a lot!
So i went with overall textures Disabled and Models/NPC Disabled
Butter Smooth now.

Maybe i also shouldn't play at 1080p.

Anything else to tweak the hell out of it?

I'd enable click to attack as well as being able to pick guild quests so you can avoid mummy wrappings quests.
