Recently got into this.
Overall aesthetically pleasing and very original. I haven't seen much games where the main character is a female and a loli at that. Recommendations for similar games like this?

Just some thoughts.
1-2-3 for the PC98 is a pretty weak entry. It feels as if Compile was still trying to find out the direction where the series is heading. Evidently the overall aesthetic is more morbid than later entries. It's as if it was trying to fit into the demographic mold of the market for the PC98.

The problem with 1-2-3 is the lack of development. In 1 you gain new spells but in 2 and 3 you have everything from the start. Equipment and the like is also limited so it boils down to numbers growing larger, except you don't actually see those numbers.
3 adds Karbunkle as a mechanic but he's not very useful.

The MSX2 version of 1-2-3 came out before PC-98 and it's cute and not gory. PC-98 is the outlier like the OP mentions.
