Rewrite is more applicable in this case.
Sites like RHDN should actually scrutinize translations and the like. Some actually admit being machine translations but the majority goes through unchecked and people eat them up without knowing any better.
Adding both scripts to a project page should be trivial and allows for a quick check rather than comparing line by line in multiple emulators.

I'm fine with most commercial translations. At least with them I know that the translation was done by someone who actually knows Japanese.

Also, the problem with (commercial) SNES translations was more about lack of ROM space so they had to abridge a lot. Like, half of the text.

(It turns out kana-only Japanese text is a whole lot more compact than English.)

So that's the main reason the fan retranslations exist, I think.

Current machine translators are so bad they flub basic textbook lines half of the time, let alone any sort of conversational speech as machines are unable to pick up nuance - there's a couple of "smoking guns" based on familiarity with how machine translations work that give away that a work isn't translated properly, like the "Eagle" fuck up in the Dragon Knight translation

are machine translations. They are often garbled nonsense because machine translation isn't very good.
If you take such a machine translation and "rewrite it for clarity" without actually comprehending the original text, you end up with fan fiction that actually makes the intention harder to understand, it just doesn't look like an obvious machine translation any more.
When you make fan translations you often plug text into Google to see if you got everything right but you should realize that Google isn't perfect and go with your own translation when in doubt.
It's possible this didn't involve a machine translation and is simply constructed around a few translated words as that's how it was done before the advent of MTL, but I don't see why you would do that.

For instance in the case of

The deal with the question marks is that I feel those lines may or may not be bad but I cannot say for sure.

The issue with the first lines is that the underling came to wake up the boss. The お時間です line reveals that.

So they technically should be "Boss... Boss, wake up!" "Huh, is it morning already?"

However, it's very possible that these errors on repeated lines are an editing choice, that they decided that this won't flow well in English, so let's replace them with something else. (This I am relatively OK with.)

Also, it's silly to go over it word by word. If it gets the point across I wouldn't bat an eyelash. Shrug.

This is only done with video games (and occasionally cartoons) because they're still considered disposable entertainment. When a Japanese novel is translated into English, they don't try to pretend like Osaka is really Denver or whatever. Same with movie subtitles. If a game takes place in a real-world location, then the localization should respect that. And this is the case with Idol Hakkenden; there's a bunch of characters and locations that will no make sense if you pretend it's set in America or really anywhere but Japan, so you'll inevitably end up with an incoherent translation in which the text frequently doesn't match the images. Removing things the author finds too violent for kids is no better; this is a NES fan-translation, it's not going to be primarily small children playing it. I was watching Nightmare on Elm Street and Schwarzenegger movies when I was an elementary schoolkid anyway, and so were all the kids I knew, so this just strikes me as nonsense.

I'm not mad at this particular project because, thankfully, it's already been translated, but if it were the only translation, it'd be really too bad.

I also don't understand the whole "refusing to do any research" thing at all. Research is good. It enriches your work.

First of all, let me say that I think fluidity of translation is much more important than getting everything literal. The line-by-line criticism is too nitpicky, and if I were the translator and spotted one of these errors, and the current the English translation sounded good, then I'd probably look at it for thirty seconds and if I can't reword it better by then, I'd leave it be.

(This fluidity of translation is unfortunately what anyone doing Google translations (such as the Patreon guy) has to specialise on... Ah, who am I kidding. *All* solo translators need to specialise on it. Because otherwise the end result is just jarring to read.)


In total, there are something like ten lines that are wrong enough that they ought to be fixed. In other words, everything else in the script is hunky dory.

(You *could* twist it to mean a 16 % error rate since the extract is only 60 lines long... Ah, I don't know whether that's a good thing or bad thing.)


What follows is random commentary. They are not the ten lines I'd replace.

My problem was that I couldn't deal enough damage per turn compared to the healing he got. Only one can attack up front with Rumi providing ranged support. Even with Reika's ability to grant an extra move to one of them it wasn't enough.

We basically just need somebody go through the game with save states going for a single girl to see whether you can actually end up with them or not. Thankfully the game is relatively clear on whether you picked your answers wisely.

I feel the same way. There are a few games I wouldn't mind seeing get more recognition. I'm half considering just doing a translation and then handing that to a hacking group, but I don't know how to rip the text from a game so unless it's somehow easy enough that you don't need much hacking knowledge to do I'm out of luck there.

When I was compiling the Night Slave Japanese script, what I did was attach a text hooker and then after every stage, copied the output to a text file (I also accidentally left in a lot of low health messages which I never edited out)

It's not a proper rip but for more linear games I feel like it would work well enough to get most of the text - then when someone with the hacking talent comes along he can probably grab you the rest.

The game I was thinking of doing it with is a RPG with a few routes and endings. It doesn't have nearly as much text as say YU-NO but doing it that way will take some time. But I suppose it's better than messing with a program I have no idea how to use and failing.
