The whole ordeal with mark's reputation was a bit of an overreaction frankly, I don't really care what or who he is in the least in a world where everyone is looking to out-edge one another in the first place.

I wouldn't call it good. It's extremely feature bloated now, and then back in the early days the balance was fucked.
It serves as a gateway mod for people who never seen a Doom mod before and it's commonly popular amongst normals.

Latest PrBoom+ source from https://svn.prboom.org/repos/branches/prboom-plus-24/prboom2 (needs svn client to dl the full repo). The ONLY place in the code where mouse input is polled is I_GetEvent in src/SDL/i_video.c (and some stuff in TEXTSCREEN directory but that's some old text output mode and not relevant). I_GetEvent is called only by I_StartTic - which is, unsurprisingly, called only when new tics need to be processed so no more than 35 times per second.

The difference is just not that great I guess. Input lag can come from many sources and <28ms might just be a small part of the total. ZDoom's mouse input only enhances quick aiming, not seeing monsters' positions or anything else. As for capped framerate, low fps is also a downside simply because of how it's harder to see stuff. On the other hand these details might not even be known to those who'd like to try to optimize everything about their setups.

DTWID is mostly good, but too many maps are kinda generic and lack any personality.
UDTWID is good. Probably their most focused release.
DTWID TLE has some good maps, but suffers the same issue I have with DTWID. Gameplay also isn't as consistent.
D2TWID is good. Has a bit more personality in some of its maps. I've seen some people consider its Petersen style maps better than Petersen's actual doom 2 maps.

D2INO is honestly VERY hit or miss. Suffers a bit from "Community Chest" syndrome.
Doom 2 Reloaded isn't in the same vein at all, IMO. Its decent, though.

I'm pretty sure GGmanlives does this, he complained about Ion Fury not having enough ammo and being too hard, but he played first time on the hardest difficulty.

I played on it's medium difficulty and had ammo galore. It's just so fucking annoying that after years of picking UV automatically, doomers have accustomed themselves to always doing it without being aware they're picking the hardest difficulty (nightmare is more of a different game mode)

Depends entirely on what feel you're going for. Personally, I play most wads on glboom+ as it feels the cleanest. I also play a lot on Crispy Doom @320x200 for that classic feel (esp. with older megawads). I use GZDoom for weapon/monster mods.

If only want a single sky throughtout the level then you need to replace the F_SKY1 in the wad files (you can use slade3 for this)
but if you want multiple skys in a level you can use a sky transfer, linedef 271 iirc, put the sky as the upper texture on this line and any tagged sectors will use the selected sky - this is for Boom compatible maps but if you’re using UDMF theres probably a far easier way but im not familiar with UDMF myself

And every single media outlet ran terrible articles about it, attributing most common source port features (like uncapped framerate, jump, ability to look around etc) as Mark's personal achievement that pushed doom modding several light years ahead.

By myfirstmap.wad standards this is very good, it looks clean. You're clearly competent enough at actualizing your ideas - the dynamic light effect on the door is very cool. However I don't think it plays as well as it looks.
The shotgun secret is sort of redundant as you get given one regardless at the next encounter; I suppose its slightly easier with the shotgun but the difference is negligible imo.
The following secret also feels purposeless, its unlikely that even the worst players will need HP or ammo at that point and something about having two secrets without monster encounters in between tickles me the wrong way.
The fake-out trap is clever but needs to be more vicious: perhaps a pinkie for support or more imps to shield the shotgunners.
The blue-key trap is also too tame, everyone expects a trap on key pickup and this was a by-the-books fake wall - too easy to deal with even using just the pistol.
The blue-door also needs work, you've funneled monsters through a fairly narrow bottleneck which allows players to just hold the trigger and be victorious. What I was expecting was the pinkies to teleport behind me creating a pincer trap, I don't know if that sounds interesting or what you'd want?
I think I liked the starting room the best because it gave off a good first impression considering what you'd usually expect from a first map but that metal texture gets old real fast, you could see a lot of improvement by just re-texturing the blue-key and penultimate rooms.

Anyway its still a cool map and its good enough that I'd be eager to play your next one so mission accomplished.

There's a "flash" mask in vanilla that is always fullbright in all conditions, that's how muzzleflashes for weapons are made.
It is not done in vanilla because it requires to massively edit actors to make it work, which is a lot of finicky shit with DEHACKED, but it can be done.
It was not done before because it breaks all kinds of compatibilities with anything else that uses DEHACKED, but since they are retooling whole roster here that's not an issue.
In GZDoom you don't have to edit actors, just put brightmap with the same name as a sprite in apropriate folder, so it's not that big of a deal there.

Final Doomer 3.1 is disappointing so far:
- RL+ tier weapons in AV set are bad at crowd control, and this is for megawad which is known for huge hordes. How the heck are you supposed to beat map25 with these?
- Hellbound is another generic ww-doomnukem styled weaponset, why? Could've done something in style of Doom 3, since the megawad is inspired by it. Some chainsaw replacement to illuminate those dark-ass halls, for example.
- Whitemare is ok except for pistol being a huge dong that covers half of the screen. Not fixed in the update.

A lot of people were put off because they expected easy Episode 1 styled maps, not Romero's hard style seen in TFC and late Doom 2. There's a ton of similarities to E4M2/E4M6/Map26/Map29 throughout Sigil. It's good if you appreciate that style, I find it really neat that he managed to make a challenging Doom 1 episode after a 20-year mapping coma with only two warmups beforehand. It's also maybe the only wad I've ever played where I actually turned autorun off and only ran when necessary.

I started playing IF at the time of it release an I only finished a few days ago because I just couldn't bring myself to play it for prolonged period of time. I sit down play through a level or two and then get to "oh god I can't take this shit any longer" and go play something else.
Strangely that didn't happen with Duke or Blood, which I replay regularily.

The problem to me is it's just as brown as before, except now there's some glowing green and the design of everything (aside from the plasma gun) is, imo, worse and more fantasy-esque. Doom 2016 was good, but they didn't solve the issue of color from that game. A difference between old and new Doom is that one has "levels" and the other has "locations"
Doom's levels are abstract and cannot really feel like actual places, but with a good use of assets and level making, you can make areas memorable and in the end, their assets like textures are meant to represent themes of settings

But you never get the feeling that the setting has an interesting theme for mapping potential
In some way, these kind of games compare to Mario or Sonic in the sense that their universes or settings have selections of props and assets that define their worlds

Just a little crash course on languages and their common uses since you seem to be curious, almost every game engine will be low level, especially anything relating to 3D graphics because it's so resource intensive, usually assembly, C, and C++, they'll be scripted in high level languages such as lua or python, but be written in C/C++, in the early days, written purely in ASM/C

I don't like the shrinkray and freezethrower in dook. They just feel gimmicky and both are functionally the same in that you need to walk over to the enemy afterwards to actually kill them. Also, laser mines just seem like a total waste of time and not even once I have felt the desire to use them. Shrinker's basically your BFG, it effectively oneshots all the toughest enemies. You can also just shoot frozen enemies, you don't have to walk over and kick them. Even if they thaw out, they're still left with just 1 HP.

Try playing the game on pistol start and you'll likely have more of an appreciation for the arsenal. The tripmines have a massive radius compared to other explosives, so they're really helpful for softening up a crowd and conserving ammo. The freezethrower is also extremely useful on Damn I'm Good, since it lets you permanently kill enemies without having to use explosives. You can whittle them down with your otherwise useless hitscans, then land the killing blow with the freezethrower so they won't respawn.

"FLASH" is a supplement state, usually rserved for weapons, invoked by firing functions, basically renders a second sprite on top of prior one at full brightness.
That's how Chaingun muzzleflash is done - it's actually 2 sprites, one of a chaingun, and another one of the flash. Same function makes player sprite to light up.
I presume they altered monsters so that every frame invokes "fire" function as if they are shooting, but without actual target or shooting, and added "flash" state with apropriate sprites.

Vanilla doesen't do this because it requires to render double sprites for every object, and on target PCs that would've tanked the framerate hard.

Zandronum is the best option for internet multiplayer so far, it has some bells and whistles from GZDoom but no the zscript thing, so it does not runs the latest mods from nowadays. Also it gives you way more frames per second from having a fitter engine overall. my old craptop gets 60fps and my desktop gets like 600 fps. If you want to try doom with internet multiplayer, Doomseeker is a must, so easy to use and setup, goes along pretty well with Zandronum also.

I've played the demo on the dude's itch page. It was pretty fun, but the frames dip hard whenever anything even sorta crowded happens on screen. It's basically Doom 2016's arcade mode but they don't give you all the weapons.

It has a punch button, a dash button, a slide button, a scoring system, and some other unique things, but the level design is really bland so far.

The fun of the game right now is chaining headshots and pulling off the more advanced moves.

By far my favorite aspect is that the only way to get health is to coat yourself in blood. getting up close, blowing someone apart with the double barrel shotgun, and getting a bunch of health from it is actually really satisfying.

I want to see where the game goes but honestly it kinda gave me a headache and I could probably only play it for short bursts.

i think a problem both brutal doom and gzdoom have is people forgetting that they're unofficial products
it's cool to see how fans kept the series relevant with mods and how really good some of that stuff is, but even then, it's someone's project from a hobby
even with those articles jerking off fanmade sonic games "that understand sonic better than sega" aren't on the same level as the reputation of bd and gzd
it's probably why there's a lot of drama around these specifically, specially when there's actual flaws of the projects that are discussed less than pointless drama
it also happens that doom's pop culture status is practically based off fanstuff like the repercussions of evil story and a lot of other memes
sometimes even more than stuff about the games themselves
doom might as well be in some unique position when it comes to this

Many vanilla (as in doom2.exe) map-only wads from the 90's and 00's didnt bother using dehacked to change the automap names, as it would've been too much hassle for a purely cosmetic change. Back in those days, you had to manually dehack your doom2.exe through an executable to get the changes, and then manually undehack it when you were done.
It's more common for vanilla wads to change automap names nowadays, as Chocolate Doom allows dehacked patches to be applied easily through the command-line, and more advanced source ports treat dehacked patches as a lump that can be read internally from the wad itself.
