Even to this day I still think the Tomb Raider games were better than Super Mario 64 and most of the Rare games of the time

They're completely different kinds of games. I like TR better As well but it's apples and oranges.

But I agree, Rare games are complete trash.

A common English phrase. It just means that although similar the things are different enough that comparing them is largely pointless.

That's not saying much, at the time of release it was considered an all time great game nearing the level of praise Mario 64 and some other top rated games of the era got, so you're not really going out on a limb. I would say you are massively underselling by saying it's better than Mario 64 which it is way way better than, but that's neither here nor there.

This. Ridiculous to compared the two.

Well you obviously have the language ability of a small child so I wouldn't be impolite to people asking for help on how to use common english phrases.

>Is the first Tomb Raider a good place to start?

Why wouldn't it be? Most of us who grew up around these generations usually played the first game in any given series.

It can be difficult to get the classic DOS version working on modern systems, but you should be able to hunt down a loose copy of the PS1 version and play it that way. Remember that all PS2 and PS3 models are compatible with PS1 discs.

I have the Steam version and the game runs just fine, you can even set it up to play in 1080p widescreen easily. Also the saving system in the PS1 version sucks dick.

Angel of Darkness, and the current reboot. All the other ones are fine.

Much of the original dev team seems to have departed by TR3. The games do diverge quite a lot from TR1 and 2 at that point. I've played them all, but 1 and 2 are the only ones I still own.

If you plan to play them all - yes.
If you just want to have the gist of Core-era TRs - play TR3 instead, will give you the right idea about the series under Core.

>>5852126
Depending on version of it you have, AoD is to be avoided. In the other TR thread, there is a dump with Polish releases of Core TRs (still in English) that has the most patched-up version of AoD in existence, so you can try using it.
LAU trilogy from Crystal Dynamics is passable, but obviously non-retro.
2nd reboot, starting from 2013 game, is fucking pure cancer.

>> No.5852952

Like already pointed out by >>5852706, it depends on the game version you have. If you got any of the earlier releases, you are doomed, as the bugs will make it impossible to progress at few specific moments if you are unlucky. If you get any of the later releases, you should be fine.
Atmosphere-wise, AoD is 11/10. But gameplay, especially in bugged versions, can get tiresome.
Personally I wish there was some unofficial patching going for the game to iron-out the final bugs that are still there even in Cenega's release.

Yeah, no, I'll pass. I've been playing Mario since the early days of the series, Mario 64 was a boring and uninspired game back in the day, and it remains as such today. Have lots of fan trying to control Mario seeking the end of the stage without falling to oblivion, I'll stick to the older and actually great games of the series.

Play TR4 is easier to master controls. If tou master them in TR4 you play well all the other games. I do this to this day. When I want to play TR after some years not playing, I play TR4 for a while to get the controls again.

>> No.5859254

Control-wise the advice is sound...
... but then there is the fact TR4 is flat out too difficult for newcomers, unless you want from people to just play with a walkthrough at hand
