It's fun, although a bit too gimmicky at times, such as the olympics tryout, the bicycle, the alchemy pot, and the final world being mostly autoscrollers and boss fights. If you want to see a really good N64 sidescroller, go play Goemon's Great Adventure.

One of the ugliest 2D platformers in existence but also one of the most genius ones. The whole concept of grabbing and shaking as a core mechanic is so foreign that even late into the game you smack yourself on the head going "Duh, why didn't I try grabbing and shaking it earlier?".

It's also made for replaying stages for the sake of speedrunning and secret-hunting so there's a lot there.

Really? I think you have been lucky then, this game is not close to being among the ugliest.
Although I guess you say that because of the clancer faces? I remember I used to think those were a reference to the movie Scream, which was popular back then. It's actually a reference to some ancient japanese statues or something, though.

Even if that's the case, MM is not close to being the ugliest even among pre-rendered looking games.
Also try playing these games on an actual CRT. pre-rendered graphics really benefit from not being stretched from their 240p original resolution, I mean most games do, but pre-rendered stuff especially.
