leisure suit larry 1-3 are still very underrated in that regard, especially 2, going from quiet contemporary LA streets in daylight to a cruise ship to numerous islands and airports. of course, all fall victim to the shitty cryptic sierra puzzles and timed events, but i've never seen such a realistic portrayal of the locations presented. 2 in particular has this real depressing vibe going on that i can't put my finger on.
sierra's police quest also takes place modern day but i never really played those

I played 3 when I was too young for it and couldn't get far. The Larry game I have a soft spot for is 5. At lot of it is thanks its art style. It is the most stylized (and, for me, stylish) game of the series and has the nerdiest plot, but it rarely gets talked about compared to 1 (VGA), 6 and 7.

That is a rather pretty game. It makes good use of the Mega Drive's limited palette, and the animation is really smooth. Too bad the parallax layers are upscaled and pixelated. It doesn't look like it plays better than Soccer Kid, but it's worth trying.

Amen! The controls are my only complaint. They feel stiff and somehow slow. Its sad since aside from that Flashback packs a punch.
