Sephiroth is a terrible villain, that's all I really have against the game, since every other iteration of FF7's lore has made sephiroth out to be an entirely diffrent character than he acted in the game, and in the game there was two Sephiroths anyways, the WAR HERO sephiroth, and the babbling fucking idiot monster sephiroth, and everyone who I've heard sing the praises of it seems to constantly mesh WAR HERO personality into the shithead version of sephiroth that you see almost the entire game. I have played through this game very early in 1998 and never played it again, my feelings about this game are authentic.

I remember that I disliked it for being too emotional at times. And what was up with that RTS part where you have to defend that observatorium? There never was a way to replay that, what a shame about it. That was just a very badly design decision.

However, the motifs and themes are all rightly alligned. But this does not mean it's perfect. It was memoriable and the later parts when WEAPON attacked Junon and the Cannon nailed it was quite awesome and I still remember them in pretty great detail.

The AerithDies part was nicely made though, it was different back then and I still like it. I liked how they dragged her death around a little, seemed a little bit more realistic this way. No totally unsensitive "shikata ga nai" bullshit this time.

They dragged half scenes about Cloud being a special mindfucked snowflake and that was just jerking around in fullemo mode to make players attached to his character, though I stopped caring about him totally during CD4. Vincent semmed badass back than though and I always bet on him. He also was one of the optionals as far as I can remember. I remember when this game got very popular in the university I attended to. People told about all sorts of secret characters - many of them where blatantly lying of course.

I also liked how Yuffie's story was also fully optitional - yet rather lenghy.

One of the best placed I can remember was Golden Saucer, which was the best thing this game had.

This also has been the last game I knew about that had a lot of discussion going on, such as revieving Aerith and lots of other bullshit. It was fun nontheless.

It still was a great game. In retrospect though, It felt more like a generic Anime Series then anything else. It stopped being a atmospheric masterpiece close after they left Midgar. For a game though, such a direction was still unique.

Sephiroth is a good villain because of the way he is linked to the main character. He is wrapped in mystery along with the events of 5 years ago. Cloud looked up to him and was betrayed. Sephiroth must have been surprised that a normal human could muster up the courage to throw him off into the mako after being impaled by his sword after his big rant on how humans stole the planet from the Centra. Then Sephiroth runs into cloud again on the ship and finds that this man that defied him has become warped mentally somehow. Sephiroth decided to play with his emotions and memories rather than just get out and out revenge. He strings him along, using him for his own ends, taking important things away from him along the way and discards him when he purpose is served. Cloud has to overcome not just his hero but himself as well. This builds a very real connection with Cloud that turns Sephiroth into a true rival.

He is much more than the edgy emoroth stereotype that people seem to latch onto.

Interesting point. I put forward that after they left Midgar was the point it shifted into "Final Fantasy" mode. One thing that pisses me off about a lot of fans in this game is how upset they get over Aeris's death. Then the people who hate the game take the piss out of that, but wasn't her death meant to be completely undramatic?

I remember my first playthrough. I had shitty stats and was around level 50 across the board. I had missed all sorts of materia and had shitty equipment.

Safer Sephiroth kicked me around and ground me into the dirt. Every time I revived and healed a party member, he'd just down another. His repeated use of Supernova drained my party of elixers and backed us into a corner. Finally it was just Cloud left alive and he had about 500 hp. His limit guage filled up and in a last move of desperation he let loose an unrestrained Omnislash.

My fucking face when the music stopped playing and Sephiroth began fading away.

Yeah, I only realised this a couple of years ago, after having already played through the game twice. Prior to that I was completely confused as to what actually happened, as much of the plot is 'hidden' and major details are implied rather then explained.

I love that the first time Cloud and Sephiroth actually see each other face to face, with full awareness of each other's identity, is at the very end of the game when you face him in the crater.

I thought FF7 was a great game, but I like FF8 better. I just bought FF9 last week and I'm playing for it for the first time. The last time I actually saw a physical copy of 9 was at least 12 years ago, I nearly shit a brick when I saw it.

7 has a great sound track and I really did like the characters. I thought Yuffie was funny and Cloud and Tifa's relationship was done well. In fact, all of the characters in my opinion had a great back story.

As for the villain, Sephiroth was a great because he didn't fully even understand himself. He's the product of Hojo messing around with Jenova. Sephiroth is such a multifaceted villain.

>Clear motivation for the characters at any moment
"Clear motivations" does not necessarily make a story good. FF4, and every FF past 5 did story better. Yes, even the shitty ones.
>likeable personalities and developments
...are found in other games, but not here
>Villains motives are defined easily, and never lose their sense
Again, clear doesn't necessarily mean good. Exdeath was a shallow, boring villain that generated next to no emotional response.
