Simple question, /vr/

What is your favorite Sega Genesis game, and why?

Picture related, this is the only game I would consider "perfect", It has everything from lightning fast gameplay, spot on controls and an AMAZING OST!

Damn this is one badass game

This question is too hard, OP.

There are too many goddamn awesome Genesis games.

Shinobi3, Toejam & Earl, Landstalker, Chakan, D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun, Phantasy Star series, Sonic, Rocket Knight Adventures, Castlevania Bloodlines, Splatterhouse, Herzog Zwei, Altered Beast, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Shining Force, Gunstar Heroes...

I could be here all day naming "favorite" games.

Contra the Hard Core - as Anon already said, it has four characters to choose from, all of which play differently and each one with a set of 4 unique weapons. There are four main pathways through the game with 12 levels in total (+ a hidden one), six different endings, 65+ enemy types almost half of which are bosses with multiple attacks and forms.
It has tons of personality and style, awesome cyberpunk setting (hell, even the character select screen is impressive), great graphics with some of the best visual effects ever to grace the Mega Drive, memorable action set-pieces... oh, and a killer soundtrack! On every imaginable level it is one of the best games ever made.

Also,

Vampire Killer (aka Castlevania Bloodlines) - for reasons not unlike those quoted above. Konami really did their best with their Mega Drive efforts!

The Super Shinobi II - Anon already explained why.

Earthworm Jim 2 - Even the first game was one of the best, but the sequel takes the cake here. Practically every stage plays differently and features some wacky gimmick and yet they all manage to be perfectly well balanced and fun to play.

Each one of these is a contender for the top on my list, but if I really had to choose only one I would probably go with Contra.

Some other favorites: Alien Soldier, Gunstar Heroes, Burn Knuckle series, Comix Zone, Splatterhouse part 2 & 3, Gynoug etc.

Cannon Fodder is not a RTS, say whatever you want.

The others - even Herzog Zwei - can be considered RTS-Themed games. It goes along with games like Return Fire.

>> No.586152

I know that I haven't played enough Mega Drive games to state my absolute favourite with certainty (I only have around 20), but right now the contenders are:

Probotector, which I've definitely spent the most time with, but I let up after discovering how butchered the game was compared to the original. I just went off it.

Mercs, which is fun as fuck.

Hellfire, which I believe has the strongest level design out of all the MD shmups I've played so far.

>> No.586239

ToeJam & Earl. I have a lot of great memories messing around and exploring in this game with my brother and friends. It's a game that doesn't take itself too seriously yet has really fun gameplay, particularly the items. The enemy selection is pretty varied, with some enemies really inspiring fear in you (like the boogeyman). Trying to catch Santa is also a lot of fun. Also, if I recall, you can skip the ship pieces and the levels will continue to randomly generate into infinity, although that might have just been a neighborhood myth. And the leveling up mechanic was cool, too.

Hey guys, I'm setting up Hyperspin at the moment and doing Genesis right now.

Would you say Sonic 1-3 is sufficient or should I also have Sonic + Knuckles as well for every cart? i.e. do I need S+K,S+K1, S+K2, and S+K3? Not really a huge fan of Sonic but I get completionist OCD about some things.

And Alien Soldier is the best genesis game without a shred of doubt.

But they are. There's two modes; one with a fixed world and another with randomly generated one. The only one that's always fixed is the very first level, which only lasts for 30 seconds anyway.
